I am old enough to realize that cults of personality have existed for... a long time. Folks like the Karda$hians aren't a new thing. However... I DO believe that with the advent of social media, their effect on our society is much more deliterious. I know there are folks who frame their entire existence around these "reality" personalities.

Actually, I think these days the cults of personality of much more superficial and ephemeral. It used to be that a CoP nearly always resulted in some sort of position of political (or religious) power. That doesn't happen nearly as much these days. Most subjects of CoPs are meaningless celebrities with no real influence in the world. The notable exceptions are relatively few.

Yeah? "No real influence in the world"? Really? I would counter that conjecture by saying that other than Ronald Reagan and, say Clint Eastwood achieving political office, the CoP's that we're dealing with now have an almost exponentially more negative influence on our society. It is my belief that these "reality" shows (of which the Karda$hians are just a part of) are teaching the television-watching pubic that it no longer takes talent or hard work to climb to the top of the fame ladder.
