(Fox News)   Bad news, citizen. You were unpatriotically thrifty this holiday season and, as a result, retailers had their worst year since 2008. As punishment, we will now go over the fiscal cliff. Hope you learned your lesson   (foxnews.com) divider line 158

Because only stupid dumbf*cks go to the goddamned "sales" at Black Friday, when all they're buying is crap specifically stocked to move on those days. Everyone else did their shopping back in October on Amazon. Big box stores are f*cking done, like paying with paper checks.

retailers had their worst year since 2008...

The results were weakest in areas affected by Sandy and a more recent winter storm in the Midwest. Sales declined by 3.9 percent in the mid-Atlantic and 1.4 percent in the Northeast compared with last year. They rose 0.9 percent in the north central part of the country.

The West and South posted gains of between 2 percent and 3 percent, still weaker than the 3 percent to 4 percent increases expected by many retail analysts.

Online sales, typically a bright spot, grew only 8.4 percent from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to SpendingPulse

Retailers had their worst "growth" since 2008.

That's funny, because yesterday on Fox News on TV (my half-brother had it on at xmas .. ugh!) they were talking angrily about how retail was reporting the best year in 12 years ..

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way"

For fark's sake... What's wrong with us as a society? It wasn't the worst sales since 2008.... it was the worst GROWTH in sales since 2008. In other words retailers still did more business then they did last year!!!! The complaint is that sales only GREW by .7%, not that they were low.

It's ridiculous that Wall Street can't be satisfied with doing better than last year while farking over the vast majority of the population by continuing the decline of most peoples' wages. Oh no, we have to do better even FASTER every year while also farking over the vast majority of the country or somehow that magically means we lost money, even though we still took in more than last year.

As do I but the economy is built on debt and those profiting off of debt, so not going overboard is un-American.

If you RTFA, you'll see it was sales growth--not actual sales--that were weak:

"A report that tracks spending on popular holiday goods, the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, said Tuesday that sales in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent, compared with last year. Many analysts had expected holiday sales to grow 3 to 4 percent.
In 2008, sales declined by between 2 percent and 4 percent as the financial crisis that crested that fall dragged the economy into recession. Last year, by contrast, retail sales in November and December rose between 4 percent and 5 percent, according to ShopperTrak, a separate market research firm. A 4 percent increase is considered a healthy season.

Am I the only one confused as to how a .7% increase over over a two-month period compared to last year denotes the worst shopping season?
1) it's an increase
2) Why a two-month period and not just Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve?
This seems like an interesting way to cherry-pick data. "This 5-day period, compared to 1995, is lower, therefore, the economy sucks".

Hey sonny; I still use paper checks.

Back in my day, when we shopped for Christmas we walked 15 miles in the snow, uphill both ways, fighting off Indians the whole way. Then we waited for hours in the snow, and we liked it; ya damn commie.

While pulling in record profits and yet laying off employees and cutting back on their benefits. Only for the workers though, the executives will get raises and bonuses as usual.

This article seemed very light on data for comparison. I may just be tired, but it was difficult to figure out what they were comparing. This whole article sounds like a press release as news from MasterCard Analytics.

You may have noticed that our entire economy is built on the concept of "growth", so it isn't just Wall Street that's farking us over, it's a poorly-designed economy. The whole think falls apart without perpetual growth. Yay, capitalizm.

I did spend less this year than I have in the past, and not only that, I did -all- of my shopping online about a week before Christmas. I think I'll do it that way ever year from now on...much less stressful than fighting the crowds.

I was just in line behind two elderly people who were paying their bill with $1 bills and nickels, and arguing over who owed what percent of the total. After about 5 minutes I started trying to figure out the politest way to say "Just leave. I'll pay for you, since the $20.45 you are struggling to pay is less than I consume weekly in beer. Merry Christmas."

2012-12-26 03:48:56 PM
There was some growth, just not what was expected by some.

In Washington, this is known as "Baseline" budgeting, where a spending cut results in more money spent, just not as much more as was originally planned.

There was no reason to think that NGOs would not adopt the same tactics at some point. They're ruinous over the long term, but can make anything look like anything for a short time.
