Between the Rochester guy and this, it should be abundantly clear to everyone that we need more people carrying hammers.

The issue with tasers is they can be lethal and should be treated as such. Its not about the taser but about the amount of force being used by the cop. Tasering somebody who is threatening your life is fine. Tasering somebody who is simply mouthing off to you is not.

A perfect opportunity missed to use a taser as they were originally argued for by law enforcement when they were adopted - as a substitute for using lethal force. Instead we read about tasers being used against people who are simply unruly or disrespecting authority.

2. Believe it or not, most departments don't issue tasers.

CruJones:

This is how it works: if someone is close up with deadly force and a cop shoots, then the cop should have tased point-blank and prayed he didn't miss with a prong or the lines get torn or the guy's clothes were too thick for a good connection. The cop is bad and we should kill him for his crime of using the more reliable method of stopping a deadly force aggressor. Also who knows if the bad guy was deaf and couldn't hear the cop telling him to drop the hammer? Maybe there was a nail behind the cop and the guy was just trying to help?

If the guy is at range with the hammer and the cop tases when he still has the time and distance to transition to another weapon if the taser fails him, then the cop is a bad guy because the dude wasn't actually GOING to hurt the cop with the hammer. How could the cop know what the hammer-guy's plan is if he doesn't spend an undefined period of time (undefined, but always longer than whatever amount of time the article in question suggests the cop(s) spent) trying to talk the person down. The poor guy could fall and hit his head or something, so the taser shouldn't be used until the hammer is already close enough to hit the cop - you know, the point at which the cop has one shot with a tool that is annoying to reload (takes two hands to do so) and at which transitioning to another tool could take too long.

In short, the only use of force that farkers EVER like is when the cop shoots someone who has already shot at him (and fills out an affidavit swearing he will continue to shoot with intent to kill), and then sometimes there are even calls that the cop should have tried to shoot the bad guy in the leg or shoulder instead of center mass. In every other scenario I've seen on this website there are farkers insisting that cops should always be using a lower level of force than the bad guy; maybe once I saw farkers accept an equal level of force, maybe.

Cops aren't paid to take hits. They aren't trained to be ninjas. They are under no compulsion to use a lower level, or even equal level, of force to the person they are trying to make do something.

If you passively resist them they can go hands on and touch pressure points or physically move you.
If you actively resist they can pepper spray, tase, or strike pressure points.
If you are assaultive without a weapon they can use their csb to strike you.
If you are assaultive with a weapon (along with other examples of deadly force) they can shoot you.

There is nothing wrong with that. Sadly there are far too many events where cops use a higher level of force than that. I'm not a cop-lover, but I have no patients for people who are physically assaultive with anyone, cops or otherwise. There is no reason that anyone defending themselves from deadly force should place themselves at greater risk in order to save the bad guy. fark that.

Not everyone wears a helmet 24/7 as you evidently do. Hammers can do quite a bit of damage to a skull while a person is executing a hip throw.

/Good for the officer, bad for the suspect. Obviously a "suicide by cop" situation. Now that poor police officer has to live with the fact that he's killed someone. That has to be tough. Even if in this situation it was called for.

I love this song. Not because of the song itself but because of the point in time it represented. I wish people like you guys were cops. Why don't you sign up for the job and then use the minimum force necessary at personal risk? Makes more sense than telling others to. And bonus, if all the people who talk like you guys put your money where your mouths are and are right, we'd live in a much better world.
