His apology was the first Active Voice apology I've seen from a politician in a very long time. Very unusual.

As long as the candidate for a particular party, Republican or Democrat, can waltz into office in their district then these sorts of shenanigans will exist and be politically survivable.

The article suggests that he should get leniency for being 'a good mormon'.

Well, he was busted drinking. DRINKING. And not just a little, but enough to render him drunk.

That sorta negates the whole 'good mormon' theory.

Nice to see that the law and order types always stick to their values.

And DUI/DWI isn't a one time mistake. It's just the first time he's been caught doing it.

if a man never drinks, very little will get him drunk. So it's entirely possible that he drank very little, compared to an average farker.

There's a reason there's an old saying: "Always take two Mormons fishing. If you only take one, he'll drink all your beer."

Mormons teetotal when other Mormons are around. The rest of the time they'll drink you under the table.

I'm reluctant to put the average Farkers consumption of alcohol as the gold standard of a "normal" level of imbibing.

However, with that said, if you rarely drink then you should have the common sense to not be behind the wheel of a car when you decide to.

I don't care what religion he is. He has the right to drink. However he does not have the right to drive drunk. And he also loses his moral high ground on top of it all.

Tough crap. Merry Christmas.

Actually, TISWWT. Cruising for random guys in a bathroom is creepy, and a form of harassment if you're putting the moves on a guy who isn't there for a BJ.

Depends. Certain non-LDS Mormons drink, and there are quite a few of them in the PacNW and western Canada

Not in Pocatello, Idaho (where Crapo's from) there isn't

I've been hearing all week how drunk drivers are so much more dangerous than shooters, so I assume Crapo will be resigning and checking himself in to rehab immediately.

FTFA: "It was worse. Crapo could have killed himself, or somebody else - which is a lot more serious than toe-tapping in a restroom stall." Which isn't to say that people aren't making excuses for him, but the comparison to Craig was not a favorable one.

The article doesn't suggest that at all. It says he could hire a lawyer who would argue for leniency, but that "We'd be more impressed if he did not, and instead used his standing as an example of the personal costs associated with such a mistake and to speak up about the dangers of drinking and driving."

Since LDS=Mormon, I think he's talking about "cultural" or non-observant Mormons. The common term seems to be "Jack Mormon."

I'd like to see how many Mormons identify themselves as jack Mormons to their Mormon friends. It's not a complimentary term. And there is no way to look good if you call yourself a Mormon, then get a DUI.

Hardly a useful comparison. Most Americans drink very little compared with the average Farker.

If you just boil it down to being a hypocrite I guess you can say they are even. Not sure if either DUI or solicitation are felonies so tough for me to compare. Then it just comes down to if you think gay or endangering the lives of others is the more offensive act.

But morons don't drink... Is this guy a MINO? Probably an atheist raised momon-esque but now just uses it as a tag to show the connedservedatives that he's a deeply religious man who believes in the power of heaven... where he will become an angel when he dies.

Shiny!

He isn't just a Mormon.... he a Mormon Bishop that publicly said he didn't drink alcohol. Not quite like a Catholic priest fooling around with little boys, but still a little "do as I say, not as I do".

Knew a guy who ran a cab company in Idaho Falls (deep in the heart of ID Mormon country). The biggest single source of income for his company? Making runs to the state liquor store for the Mormon Bishops.

/There's a reason that you never take just one Mormon hunting with you...or that Mormon missionaries always come in pairs.

ftfy. Granted the Mormon part does add a nice additional layer of hypocrisy to the picture, but no one looks good getting a DUI.
