Yeah, I fully expected Romney to pull some legalistic BS trickery.  I was positive that's why the campaign went dead silent.

watching nothing but fox and reading nothing but rightwing blogs like drudge... god, it's no wonder those assholes thought they were going to cruise to a victory. god, i would've loved to have been a fly on the wall when romney realized that the white house was the only house his millions couldn't buy.

I didn't actually watch the Rove clip until the day after, but I can imagine Romney would've been watching and going "oh dear god, what the fark has happened..."

/Skyped with my girlfriend as the results came in, she was watching Fox
//Was saying something about some "crazy guy going nuts on Fox" as Ohio got called

The Romney campaign seemed hell-bent on rejecting any information that didn't fit the narrative that there was a huge groundswell against 0bummer Hussein Fartbongo, which is why they pissed away resources in states they had no chance in hell of winning, like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, instead of shoring up states that they did have a chance to win, like Ohio and Florida.

It's another sign of how Romney would have been one of the worst presidents ever if he'd been elected.

You don't think that deep down he had to know it was at best a long shot?  A while back, Republican internal poll numbers were released and they pretty much read the same as the rest of the polls.  And honestly, is losing a Presidential race so bad?  He's still quite wealthy you know, I wouldn't worry too much about him.

That says a lot, doesn't it? I mean, that crazy lady who made that video election night, with her dinner of chips, cheesy dip and cigarettes yelling at people to learn how to use the internet or GTFO, I'm not surprised that she turned to Drudge for election night coverage. That makes perfect sense. But the Republican candidate?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised about something like that at this point.

There were, but it's hard to blame them when the media won't stop with the  "WOAAAHH we got a real barn burner here!" despite the fact that it was pretty obvious to anyone who looked at actual numbers that Obama was going to have a relatively easy victory.  That's just the voters, though.  The higher ups in the party can't be so willfully ignorant.  They had to know it was basically a lost cause.  McCain was too.

Supposedly their internals of their last round of polling showed a better day for Romney on Sunday than on Saturday, so instead of assuming it was just random error (especially since a single day of polling wouldn't have enough people polled to get a decent margin of error) the campaign decided it showed a major break of late deciders towards him and that Obama supporters were shifting to at least the undecided column if not changing their votes completely. Note that I haven't heard anyone say Romney was ahead on Sunday according to their internal polls; they apparently assumed the momentum from Saturday to Sunday would stay the same/accelerate by Tuesday, at which point they would be ahead. They were certain Wisconsin (where Obama won by 6.7%) and/or Pennsylvania (where Obama won by 5.2%) would be in the win column thanks to the weekend surge.

I really hope this story that they were holding out a glimmer of hope it would be 2000 with a state being called before it was clear who won is true. The only other explanation I've heard is that the campain wasn't just trying to play up their confidence and had in fact not planned for the event of a loss. Not planned in the slightest; they had to scramble to write a concession speech because they went into the night knowing they would win. That idea horrifies me, and to think someone who wouldn't even consider the possibility of an unfavorable outcome in a situation got that close to the big chair should scare everyone. Suddenly his "I won't answer what I will do to fix the situation if my policies fail because my policies will succeed" answers at the debate took on a whole new light.

but part of the reason rove gave as support for questioning the call was that he was on the phone with both the romney campaign, and the ohio secretary of state (but i repeat myself) and they were unwilling to see it called yet.

seems like the standard circular justification, at least - tell karl something, so when karl tells us that something, we'll have a reason.

I am really looking forward to the inevitable tell-all book by a campaign staffer about this election. I don't generally read political books, but I may have to make an exception in that case.

The whole campaign was complete clownshoes. It wasn't just that he wasn't a great candidate, but he managed to find new ways to screw up that left you completely dumbfounded. For instance, how was it even possible to screw up a visit to England during the Olympics? That's probably the second-easiest foreign relations event aside from visiting Canada for a hockey game.

It was a giant con game. Wealthy donors thought they had bought the election but in fact they were just handing over huge amounts of cash to Rove and FOX corp. Just like in that movie The Sting.

IMO Rove was probably more panicking at the fact he would have to explain to some very big money donors why he failed to deliver even a single 'toss-up' state. If Tomney had carried Ohio at least Rove would have been able to point to keeping a major swing state in play despite all the GOP BS there lately. Instead he delivered absolutely nothing - and realized it as Ohio was called.

Although if we were to go the conspiracy theory route - it's only worth the risk to rig an election if you know you're going to win. Let's say there was a plan to 'unskew' the results in Ohio, why would they implement it if it wouldn't affect the end outcome? Obama had won enough swing states that tinkering with the results in OH would only ensure a FEC anal probing of everyone involved. If they were going to try steal OH it would make sense to have a kill switch if it became clear Obama was going to win anyway.

Was that the guy who didn't technically conceide? If I recall that was Aiken that literally spent 15 minutes to complain about how horrible and godless Democrats are and how in the end conservative ideals will win the day, not once acknowledging that he lost the race. Correct me if I'm wrong.
