I saw a documentary on him that said he bought the prison that he was incarcerated in.

Indeed. It's unfortunate we gave up Polanco to Detroit to get him, too, as Polly was in the prime of his career and didn't want to move to third to let Utley play each day. Then we got a washed-up Polanco (who was willing to play third) in 2010.

Attempted murder, what is that? Do they give out Nobel Prizes for "attempted" chemistry?

Wasn't Urbina's mother kidnapped and held for ransom at one point? That may explain his paranoia and attacking people on his property.

From what I remember the people that were attacked were ranch hands that worked on his ranch. The prosecutor claimed that Urbina suspected them of being involved in the plot to kidnap him mother and this was payback. Of course Urbina denies this, so who knows.

IIRC, the "victims" were landscapers who had the temerity to edge his driveway incorrectly, or some such thing.

I recall reading a few interviews with teammates in Boston where they said he was an intensely hostile person who was basically Relief Pitcher Begbie, which I believe predates his time in Detroit and the whole mom-kidnapping thing.

If you are going to screw with an athlete, you might want to steer clear of closers. They often have odd minds.
