"Hedonism" kind of offends me.  Gay people are hedonistic?  Not helpful.

That keeps being brought up. It's definitely a bit of a wrong note there. On the other hand, what's a good simple symbol for hedonism?

/Seriously asking.

This is an awesome example of the endemic wankery that caused me to abandon art school back in 1984.

Sad to see that so little has changed.

" Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people."

Yea I saw pubic region too. I don't get the gay connection either. If a pink triangle is a gay symbol they probably should have picked something that looks less like groin area.

/i disagree with most of the images tho, it seems to be more a portrait of the bias of the 'artist', the fact they felt the need to add all the words doesnt help either

So, is "minimalism" just another excuse for artists with no talent, like abstract art?

If you are doing graphic design, it is kind of your job to be familiar with any symbols that might be loaded with meaning and have some history behind them, especially a symbol like the pink triangle that has entered into the wider culture after its original creation by the Nazis.

To that point, the gay movement reclaimed the pink triangle as their own thanks to that association.

This assumes that the symbols don't mean anything within the context of the diagram itself. Both "Deism" and "Free Will" have triangles in them. The "Free Will" triangles point randomly either upwards or downwards while "Deism" has a biconvex lens within a triangle pointing upwards.

So what is the meaning of triangle and why is it pink? I imagine a hedonist may be gay or might not be. I suggest it's possibly more of an anatopism than something meant as an insult.

The thing is, true hedonism isn't necessarily a direct chasing after anything and everything pleasurable. In fact, someone with a good grasp of hedonism as a life philosophy will pass up some pleasurable things because they come with associated pain that goes beyond benefits derived from the pleasure. For example, drugs like heroin and meth might be pleasurable but the addiction is not and eventually the addiction overwhelms the pleasure from the high. Or one might desire to have sexual relations with a very desirable person, but that could cause pain by harming other relationships, contracting disease, or getting one's ass kicked by a jealous lover.

Hedonism in its purest form is rather more complex than "if it feels good, do it." And I still don't know what pink triangles have to do with it. Even if it's supposed to image a female pubic region, it ignores the parts of hedonism that encourage restraint where potential pain is involved. In fact, it more endorses a reckless form of hedonism where pleasure is sought after and pain disregarded from the calculations- something the Greek philosophers would have warned against.

I probably wasn't meant as an insult, but it was a tone deaf design decision that is going to be taken the wrong way no matter what the designer intends. If it can be interpreted negatively at all, it is simply a bad design and the designer failed at their job.

Nihilists were going to adopt the 'X' as their official symbol, but they didn't see the point.
