Not to be a rain cloud but in my area the thrift stores like Goodwill are staffed with people who are sentenced to court ordered community service for things like assault and battery, drug possession, theft, indecent exposure, etc. etc.

I work with a guy who got into a fight with his daughters boyfriend (boyfriend was a drug dealer) and he pulled a knife on him and ordered him off his property.  Mr. drug dealer thought it would be fun to call the cops on him and give him a criminal record (he actually told him this).  Dad was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and he got 100 hours community service which he worked off at the local thrift store on weekends.

I'm going to be a Debbie Downer for pointing this out, but the guy not only identified the kind of business he owns, he let his identified friend invite "a News-Leader reporter along."  He then approached a younger, female clerk with a creepy, "Oh I think Santa IS going to visit YOUUUU tonight..."

He's doing a good thing overall, but he's doing it to massage his own ego first and foremost.  There are plenty of people who donate to the needy (anonymously) because it's the right thing to do, without making a public spectacle of the needy in the process.

Earlier in the day, Burk had invited a News-Leader reporter along.

:\

Still, people who probably needed some extra cash got some, and he didn't have to, so.. that's pretty nice.

Well, certainly shunning them should straighten them right out.

Self-promotion at its finest: invite a reporter, give the cohort's name and enough information to be found yet opt to not directly provide ones name so it seems plausible that the acts were truly charitable. Flawless victory.

Theft yes, some drugs maybe, don't think you get community service for assault and battery or indecent exposure.

Maybe in your area, but not where I live. As someone on a tight budget I frequent thrift stores, so I know many of the employees well.

How dare this 1%-er Freeper tell those people 'Merry Christmas' and 'God bless you'? He should be ashamed of himself!

2012-12-25 05:49:47 PM
I'm sorry, it doesn't warm my heart to think of this woman breaking down over some pricks pocket change. It makes me think of everything wrong with both Christmas as we know it, and the world at large. It makes me think of a lifelong struggle to feed your children mercifully ended by death. But your mileage may vary. Merry fa king Christmas.

He did say he was inspired by a similar story, so maybe he's trying to make it a trend. I doubt people are going to send business his way because of this gesture, but if they do what of it? It's his money, it makes him feel good. i have no problem with this. It's not a Christmas miracle, it's a nice gesture for someone with the means

He could have given his name or made it a photo opt if he wanted attention. Hopefully, a few more of us will be charitable next year. You don't have to be rich to do so.

So..Obama and his magical time machine traveled back to the United States circa 1935 and laid the foundation for the modern American welfare system?

24x7x364 of being a complete dickhead isn't enough? I guess taking Christmas off was completely out of the question....

here's a doozy: last employer went a different direction after no Marine picked up the Tot Toys employees brought in to contribute. next year the busybody harpies announce they are going to benefit a local Women's Shelter. Victimized women trying to escape maniacal significant others or healing their wounds from the latest beating seek solace in this place, who for good reason keep a low profile regarding their physical location.

My co-worker women who worked mostly because they don't want to sit home, be volunteers elsewhere or better themselves with other pursuits (Wayne N.J. has a lot of 'married well' wives) - and what they hell, why should they let someone who REALLY needs steady employment $$$ have a job, they gather up all the left-over corporate swag / promo crap from the past year and bring that along as gifts for the terrified kids who have abused Moms. back then this included disposable one-use film cameras as it was a Japan based film company and we worked at their American headquarters.

A few days after the holidays there is a large display up in the cafeteria about what a success Christmas at the battered beaten scared and desperate Women's Shelter was. Included was dozens of full color photographs of the women, mostly with their children, holding up their pathetic corporate logo left over junk. I'm sure these women, many who were at the lowest point in their lives, just loved being photographed with their kids. Some had visible black and blues etcetera. Obviously not one of the well-meaning women who did this event thought once that maybe these people didn't want to be photographed at this particular time. It was jaw-dropping absolutely horrific. I tasted bile in the back of my throat when I saw those pics; one could not have felt more sad and sorry for these victims. This was one of the tasteless experiences of my life.

But hey, each and every one of them got a nifty Konica disposable color film flash camera to call their own. Merry Christmas!

See, that's your problem right there. If he'd just shot the punk dead instead of threatening him with a knife, he'd be a hero.

I hope those 100 hours gave your buddy some time to reflect on that fact. Lesson learned.

"I got them Christmas presents, but I did skip like two bills," she said.

I'm all about helping the less fortunate BUT I'm not sure if I want to really help someone who prioritized presents more than the basic necessity. Kinda reminds me of the post Katrina douchebags who used their government cash cards to buy Coach handbags instead of food and shelter.

Personally it would've been more meaningful had she skipped the kids' presents and paid her bills instead. She would've been much more deserving of random gifts and kindness then.

Meh, we don't know what the bills were, exactly.  It would have almost assuredly been a pretty good idea to pay them, but people like to see their kids happy on Christmas.

Holy cripes. You can carry a balance on most utilities and pay them off the next month or two. She wanted to give her kids some crap because that's what the corporate masters expect and have ingrained in the children's heads. Without that stupid gesture they might doubt their mother loves them which is ridiculous but true and it's not their fault.

Don't worry. That wasn't YOUR hard earned tax dollars (if you even actually pay taxes) going towards this obvious scum of the earth drag on society. It was one of your benevolent job creators doing something nice for a stranger. It's none of your freaking business.

The posts on here today have been sickening. I couldn't give two flying f*cks about Christmas but Fark has shown some bottom of the barrel Scroogery and ill will towards their fellow man.
