I can't make it though one regular-season NBA game, let alone 5 in a row.

NetOwl: The Rockets are like the 2010 Texans. They have a young, excellent offense, and when they play well, they can blow out good teams (see New York and Memphis). They don't play well every game, though, and their defense is questionable.

The remarkable thing is that it may not matter.  Lin and Harden have been playing together only a short time and they're really starting to get that ESP going.  When they're in transition they wreak havoc.  It's been a long time since I've seen a team this exciting to watch -- individuals, sure, but the Rockets are all young and have bought into a ball-movement system that's a joy to watch and hell to defend.  Even Asik can burn you for 20 points any given night -- not because he's got unstoppable post moves (I wonder if he even has a post move), but because Lin and Harden both have excellent court vision and passing skills.  Try to trap them and they will find the open man for an easy layup.  Fall back to protect the paint and they have three starters who can shoot jumpers.  That means that even if you have a guy like Tyson Chandler, your best post defender can't peel off a guy like Asik because the Rockets will burn you for leaving a man open.  That. . . that is nasty.  That's what they mean about guys like Nash and Lin "making the team better".

As for the defense, it's looking like "just enough".  Honestly, you don't need to burn out your knees when you're scoring 120 points a night, and while they have few players that can consistently stay in front of the greats, they do enough of the other stuff to make a difference.  Asik is a rebounding machine, the backcourt is good for 3-4 steals a game, and their transition offense feeds off turnovers.  Any good team can beat the Rockets, so I don't expect them to go far in the playoffs this season.  However, they will cost an older team a pound of flesh -- it takes 100% effort and top-notch defensive discipline to stop these guys.  Your biggest, slowest guy has to beat these kids up the court on every possession or they'll feast off easy baskets.  No one can take a play off or they'll capitalize.  There are certainly better teams, but there probably isn't a team in the league more physically and mentally exhausting to play against.

Are you seriously extrapolating Fark popularity to popularity in society at large? Because...that's a faulty mindset. Especially when the thread in question is taking place on Christmas.

And while I don't care about the exact ratings so long as they're sufficient to maintain the league (and I feel the same way about MLB, NHL, and NFL), the NBA's have been trending up over the last decade or so.

This is just a game that the Rockets are winning. It doesn't mean the Bulls are choking.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: NBA is dead to me. And many others based on tv ratings.

National ratings have been curving upward for the last five years and the NBA has the highest international ratings of any major American sports league.  Try again.
