Sucks that the Lakers got the all white Big Color jersey...I would get one if they come pre-stained with hotwing sauce and/or chipotle salsa. I'm too much of a pig at sporting events to keep one of those pristine.

The Rockets are like the 2010 Texans. They have a young, excellent offense, and when they play well, they can blow out good teams (see New York and Memphis). They don't play well every game, though, and their defense is questionable.

This is just a game that the Rockets are winning. It doesn't mean the Bulls are choking.

I had a theory that Artis Gilmore's afro gave him an unfair advantage against on defense as a visual deterrent.

I keep hearing how basketball is the second most popular pro sport in the USA. With five games in two teams each from the biggest city, the third and forth largest cities in the USA and the two most popular teams in the nba playing each, one would think that interest would be very high. On a day where few people are working and ten hours of games, it generates the same number of comments as the pre game show for football.

Are you seriously extrapolating Fark popularity to popularity in society at large? Because...that's a faulty mindset. Especially when the thread in question is taking place on Christmas.

And while I don't care about the exact ratings so long as they're sufficient to maintain the league (and I feel the same way about MLB, NHL, and NFL), the NBA's have been trending up over the last decade or so.

The remarkable thing is that it may not matter.  Lin and Harden have been playing together only a short time and they're really starting to get that ESP going.  When they're in transition they wreak havoc.  It's been a long time since I've seen a team this exciting to watch -- individuals, sure, but the Rockets are all young and have bought into a ball-movement system that's a joy to watch and hell to defend.  Even Asik can burn you for 20 points any given night -- not because he's got unstoppable post moves (I wonder if he even has a post move), but because Lin and Harden both have excellent court vision and passing skills.  Try to trap them and they will find the open man for an easy layup.  Fall back to protect the paint and they have three starters who can shoot jumpers.  That means that even if you have a guy like Tyson Chandler, your best post defender can't peel off a guy like Asik because the Rockets will burn you for leaving a man open.  That. . . that is nasty.  That's what they mean about guys like Nash and Lin "making the team better".

As for the defense, it's looking like "just enough".  Honestly, you don't need to burn out your knees when you're scoring 120 points a night, and while they have few players that can consistently stay in front of the greats, they do enough of the other stuff to make a difference.  Asik is a rebounding machine, the backcourt is good for 3-4 steals a game, and their transition offense feeds off turnovers.  Any good team can beat the Rockets, so I don't expect them to go far in the playoffs this season.  However, they will cost an older team a pound of flesh -- it takes 100% effort and top-notch defensive discipline to stop these guys.  Your biggest, slowest guy has to beat these kids up the court on every possession or they'll feast off easy baskets.  No one can take a play off or they'll capitalize.  There are certainly better teams, but there probably isn't a team in the league more physically and mentally exhausting to play against.

What is also entertaining is the gusto which the haters go after the NBA with their skewed metrics & hackneyed takes. It's like they are deeply, personally offended that the NBA is is a popular American pastime, let alone basketball being the 2nd most followed sport internationally.

I dig the Rockets, but Minnesota is no picnic. Pek and Love = no fun for the opposing bigs. Especially when Shved and Rubio find them so often.

Aw, I actually had family to visit with so I wasn't able to join in on the "whoa, look how unpopular the NBA is, people aren't posting on Fark on Christmas because the NBA fans on this site aren't a bunch of shut-in losers whose families don't love them!" thread.

Hey, how popular are all the NHL game threads this year? I'll be sure to check out the Winter Classic thread to make fun of how few hockey fans post there.

/actually, that would still probably have more posts than this
//which only reflects more poorly upon Fark hockey fans' patheticness.

Lin and Hardin are ultimately incompatible on a basketball court. If the offense doesn't run through Lin he's not really that useful - his strength is getting into the lane and creating off that penetration - and Hardin is the better choice to handle that role for the Rockets. Problem is that Lin isn't a good enough 3 point threat that defenders can't cheat to the center when Lin hovers by the perimeter, which chokes the lane for both Harden and Asik,

This was my take after watching them about a half dozen times. I thought this article did a nice job of breaking down the numbers: http://nba.si.com/2012/12/17/jeremy-lin-james-harden-houston-rockets/
