One thing I've noticed though is that the Spock/ Uhura relationship in the reboot should not have been a surprise.

I spent my entire thirteenth year in love with Mr. Spock. Canon would have had him with Nurse Chapel.

Old-timey fandom story:

A few months before Trek TOS made it's debut, there was a "fashion show" held at a California SF convention featuring some of the costumes to be seen in the upcoming show. Harlan Ellison was there, and being the God's Gift To Wimmun he thinks he is, stepped into an elevator with one of the models dressed up in one of the skimpy outfits.

Harlan looks over at the model and says "So hey.......what would you say to a little f*ck, huh?'

As the elevator stopped on a floor and the doors opened, the model starts to walk out, turns around, pats Harlan on the top of his head a la Benny Hill, and says "Goodbye, little f*ck" as she struts out the doors.

And then the doors closed, leaving Harlan alone to fume several floors further down.

Assignment: Earth - "This is the only episode of the second season to have Gene Roddenberry credited as "Producer" instead of "Executive Producer", the first time he had received such a credit since the first season. Roddenberry wanted to be very "hands-on" for this episode, as he hoped to turn it into a spin-off series. He rewrote Art Wallace's script and was heavily involved in production, including sets, props, casting of actors, and even the costume of Teri Garr - he insisted on shortening her mini-skirt to be "more revealing", much to the anger of costume designer William Ware Theiss."

The funny thing is that taken in the context of the times -the mid 1960s- none of this stuff seems all that weird. You could have gone to the Whiskey a Go-Go in 1966 or 1967 and seen plenty of real men and women wearing far weirder stuff and attempting to pick other men or women up while doing so.
