I have a signed copy of that book. Scalzi's a pretty damned nice guy.

I've been told I would like that. I'm guessing that's a recommendation?

I will third this recommendation, fwiw.

If I'm wrong I'm willing to accept it, I'm hardly an expert on TOS, but Yeoman is a naval title, and since Star Trek borrowed their ranks from the Navy it seems like a logical conclusion.

cretinbob: I've started watching them again on Netflix. Not sure I'm happy with the Enterprise and planets being CGI now, but the cheesiness of the special effects was an integral as it is in Doctor Who.
One thing I've noticed though is that the Spock/ Uhura relationship in the reboot should not have been a surprise.

I spent my entire thirteenth year in love with Mr. Spock. Canon would have had him with Nurse Chapel.

Yeoman is a job description... kind of assistant to the commander. Yeoman Colt is listed on the script as Yeoman J.M. Colt and her rank is Lieutenant. The comic book series Star Trek: Early Voyages name her Mia Colt... the speculation is that Mia is her middle name.

Hmmm.....

Its been years since I've watched TOS with any degree of rigor, but I can certainly think of at least one
scene when Spock shows a great admiration for Uhura's technical skills (when she was re-wiring the
communications console, and he ends their conversation by saying he can think of no one he'd trust
more with that task).  I don't know if that's something JJ Abrams picked up on, since I doubt he went back
and watched any TOS to prepare for his movie since that seems like too much work for him to do.

I can't believe that there isn't more love for the female duty uniform from TOS. It isn't much more than a slightly longer shirt. I'm not sure if the the TNG female duty uniforms (almost like a little cheerleader outfit) is shorter or not though.

That and this are the biggest Spock/Uhura moments in the original series.

I think Abrams would have reviewed the whole original series and earlier movies as part of his job if nothing else. Knowing the source material would be the difference between doing a movie he wanted to do and calling it Star Trek and deliberately adapting Star Trek into a movie he wanted to do.

Ah.  That scene was always cut out of showing of CHARLIE X by WPIX growing up, and though I'd heard
of it I'd never seen it before now.

As to Abrams:  I really want to like his stuff, but for all the interesting bits in things like ALIAS or LOST, he
just doesn't seem to pay attention to the deeper underpinnings of his story but focuses on the cool
stuff and just hopes people don't care to delve deeper into the structural problems of his stories.

Maybe, though, he truly was/is a fan of TOS, and maybe he did break his bad habits for this one
because he knew that if he did his usual half-assed but well packaged job he'd be pilloried even worse
than he was (and I truly did love his movie, and am looking forward to the next one).

Between the end of TOS and the beginning of TNG, Roddenberry started believing that he was some
sort of prophet and that STAR TREK was more than just a sci fi adventure show.

However, according to Wikipedia:

Cinefantastique reported that during filming, Cattrall participated in a photo shoot on the empty Enterprise bridge, where she wore nothing but her Vulcan ears. The story claimed Nimoy personally ripped up all of the photographs and negatives when he learned about the unauthorized photo session, because he feared harm to the franchise if it ever came to light.

Though not specifically stated, it must have been Nimoy taking the pictures, as he came out with a book
of nude photography a couple of years ago.

FirstNationalBastard: can anyone explain the purpose of this scene

If I recall correctly, they're having "girl talk" about the fact that some guy is banging Troi like a screen door in a hurricane.

I was so glad when they finally made her into a good character. Troi taking the bridge officer's test and going undercover as a Romulan made for some good Trek.

lol

I might as well be 12 when it comes to most sci-fi. I haven't been big into straight science fiction pretty much ever. I just dable here and there. Grew up on Fantasy Books, Anime and Video games for my geekiness.

I *am* on the home stretch of a complete runthrough of all the Start Trek TV series though. TOS, TNG, DS9, WOY and now am about 7 episodes into Enterprise. This is by far, the most pure "Sci-Fi" geekiness I have shown. I am told I should next run through the Dr. Who episodes also available on Netflix.

The reason NBC balked at having "Number One" as First Officer wasn't so much sexism as they didn't want Roddenberry's mistress having such a prominent role in the series.
