I thought people fighting over money spending habits was a year round event. Why blame the season for something you never got right in the first place.

Since my wife and I don't do any of those things, we don't ever fight.

I have often found the poor and less financially fortunate to be more appreciative of Xmas, while the wealthier tend to get more stressed. I think it is because giving things that really mean something and having them be really appreciated by the recipient provides more benefit to the giver than having the value of those things in the first place. On the other hand, people who get gifts for those who already have too much stuff will have a harder time finding a gift that actually has any serious value to the recipient, and the price of such gifts is generally greater, meaning there is a greater possibility that the benefit of the possession of the value given will be greater than the benefit of the act of giving.

And, from the article,  a main concern for reason #1 is the cost of visiting relatives and friends. So really the cause of Christmas fights is.....Money.

I would have said the problem is Christmas.

Money was the cause our family fought this year. It all boils down the sense of entitlement the rest of my family has towards our money. I got my neice a car and my sister in law (her biatch mother) was upset I didn't get her selfish ass anything. Every year I have to hear the same griping about how we hire a large group of homeless people to wrap all of my kids' presents. They say it would be better to use the 2 weeks of bums' pay to buy their family something instead.
I look at it like it's spending money on bums either way. One's appreciative, one's not. Id rather pay the one that is.

Stayed home from the hypocrite In laws and step kids this year. In bed with chocolate and cheech and Chong on Comedy Central. Got the step kids a ps3 and a d90...told em they ain't gettin them till they clean their room. They don't seem to care so they ain't gettin em. Bah humbug.

I'm old and own a company. I like to start family Christmas discussions this way: "Which charity should get everything?"

Wife and I had an agreement. Fifty dollar limit on our gift to each other. We both went over the limit but we both knew we weren't obliged to do so. I outspent her by a wide margin, but I also lead with a bottle of Baileys (coincidentally) and it softened the blow considerably.

I'm not trying to be a biatch, but I know many poor people and families on a personal level and they are not models of the Cratchit Family by any means. They don't say "oh, we only have $25 for Christmas dinner, presents, and a tree, so we'll get by with as little as possible and be thankful for our health, our home, and our family." I love that idea and I wish I knew more than 3 people who I actually would believe if they said it, but the others are buying up as much crap as they can get their hands on as quickly as they can find it having "fallen off a truck" just so they can take pics of massive piles of presents under their trees. I know and work in an industry that deals with very poor families and they all have Nike, Coogie, Akedemiks (whatever), Coach, iPhone/pad/pod, Bvulgari, etc etc etc. they're the people I know who are getting electronics and branded clothes out the ears today. I wish I knew of more people who are just grateful for what they have and are able to give, but it seems so romanticized and naive. Or maybe I'm just jaded and need a new job. :/

I have these religious zealot relatives who think its appropriate to take their preteens to a burn unit today, on Christmas, so they can see what Jesus is saving their eternal souls from. It's a sick and disgusting exploitation of victims of tragedy, a perversion of ministering to the sick, and I refuse to break bread with people that disgusting. I hope one of the burn victims called them on their shiat.

My inlaws love a good chrimmus shiat storm. We moved off about 6 years ago - not putting up with thier drama is a fringe benefit. We usually visit family after the 1st of the year and by then they are all worn out and/or not speaking to each other so it's pretty nice.

I have some relatives who used to listen to their police scanner and go see if they could help with wrecks. They always got mad when the officers would escort them away from the scene. A couple of years ago they weren't so lucky and actually walked up on some pretty gruesome stuff, like decapitation. Their little help missions ended right there.

You use stuff like burn victims and car crashes for entertainment under the premise of helping, you deserve what you get.

The future Mrs. titwrench and I spent $8000 to feed and clothe 200 homeless veterans. That is our Christmas now we have a ham in the oven a turkey ready to be deep fried. There are 2 coolers full of beer and soda. We have an open invitation to all friends and family to come over to eat and drink. No presents allowed. Not a single fight.
