How exactly are the Newton cops "heroes?"

a hero is someone who does their job even when they'd rather just pack it in and call it a day.  these guys couldn't stop the horrible massacre at the school, nobody could..but they've gotta be feeling like crap just the same.  instead of the usual christmas prep of parties and excited kids the cops have had to review the scene of a mass murder, write reports on the dead kids, and help clean up the mess afterwards.  then there was the funerals to attend, explanations to be made (because you always have to explain these sorts of things to someone who just doesn't understand), and the national media monday morning quarterbacking the whole town.

And despite all that, they did it.  they got up every day, gulped down coffee...and took pictures of dead kids, drew diagrams of the bodies, and wrote up reports based on evidence gathered.  then they went and patrolled the town and faced the public.  being a small town, the cops likely knew the families.  there is no way this could have been easy for them to do.  it takes a toll.  one that most cops probably wouldn't talk about even if you asked 'em.

that's heroic.  doing the job even when you'd rather just say 'f*ck it' and walk away disgusted with humanity and live on an island by yourself.

Well, it might refer to the police from other communities who gave up their Christmas holiday to make this happen.

/Or maybe it is overused and should be reserved exclusively for Farkers typing anonymously.

The post 2 down from yours explains it nicely. It's a far cry more than you've done the past 2 weeks outside of biatching and moaning you got a Kindle Fire instead of an iPad for christmas, asshole.

Jesus what a bunch of bitter assholes who think expressing a contrary view = being an edgy non-conformist.

Merry Christmas.

duffblue: Pivot: duffblue: A hero is somebody who does his job even when he doesn't want to. Thanks Weaver95 for clearing that up. I guess we can consider the soldiers marching the Jews into the gas chambers heroes because they were just doing their job, even though they didn't want to.

Oh just shut the fark up. Really! I know this is fark and all but hell, these parents are spending this day dealing with losing their 6 year old children who were shot in cold blood. These officers are spending the day and many many days and months ahead remembering the scene in there heads....really it's farking Christmas day, can you not give it a freaking rest!

Nothing like a bible thumper to shove their beliefs down your throat.

Really?? Jews/gas chambers/bible thumpers. Keep trollin you'll get more bites. Oh yeah, you're a total jackass.

I appreciate the nice gesture.

It's too bad that certain people who are mad at the world can't appreciate it for what it is.

You're going to attack religion on the holiest day of the year? Classy.

Isn't Easter holier than Christmas?

Wayne 985: Since we're all defining heroes, let me dork out and quote the great Batman, since it seems appropriate:

"A hero can be anyone. Even someone who does something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders, to let him know the world hadn't ended."

I was just saying in another thread I needed to start reading comics again to "lighten up" and was going to zip up to a local comic shop soon for some reading swag. Thanks for the reminder of how awesome Bats is, cuz now I know one of the titles I want to grab.

SockMonkeyHolocaust: I don't really mind SNL's tacky tribute as much as I minded people's reverence for a comedy show's attempt to garner sympathy-by-association for a tragedy that happened far away. It's like all these local monuments to 9/11 where they had nothing to do with it. Also, I didn't know so many people were closeted SNL watchers which is just really offensive.

I'd argue that the signs of shared humanity in this country are some of the saving graces from a pretty unending flow of bullshiat. Granted, some people go too far, but it's reassuring when most recognize we're all in this together. I point to national disaster response as an example. You had people from some of the worst hit areas on the Gulf Coast donating what they could to those left in Sandy's wake. It makes it easier to bear the size able portion of the country that are under the notion we're all on our own competing against each other.

I heard about this on the news this morning.
Damned nice, all things considering.
Some of those guys weren't even responders to the shooting --- but the crap that went on there they still see the other 364 days of the year. Having a moment to put that aside and be grateful that you aren't dead or slipping on fresh blood is good for them.

I cannot imagine how horrific it must have been to respond to that scene. Having to see and deal with the bodies of 20 dead 6 year olds? I'm really happy that they get to spend Christmas with their loved ones.

Police should not be taking any time off from that town. Especially after what just happened. Shame on them.

What if those NRA guys come back and hit another school?
