Police should not be taking any time off from that town. Especially after what just happened. Shame on them.

What if those NRA guys come back and hit another school?

a hero is someone who does their job even when they'd rather just pack it in and call it a day.  these guys couldn't stop the horrible massacre at the school, nobody could..but they've gotta be feeling like crap just the same.  instead of the usual christmas prep of parties and excited kids the cops have had to review the scene of a mass murder, write reports on the dead kids, and help clean up the mess afterwards.  then there was the funerals to attend, explanations to be made (because you always have to explain these sorts of things to someone who just doesn't understand), and the national media monday morning quarterbacking the whole town.

And despite all that, they did it.  they got up every day, gulped down coffee...and took pictures of dead kids, drew diagrams of the bodies, and wrote up reports based on evidence gathered.  then they went and patrolled the town and faced the public.  being a small town, the cops likely knew the families.  there is no way this could have been easy for them to do.  it takes a toll.  one that most cops probably wouldn't talk about even if you asked 'em.

that's heroic.  doing the job even when you'd rather just say 'f*ck it' and walk away disgusted with humanity and live on an island by yourself.

I cannot imagine how horrific it must have been to respond to that scene. Having to see and deal with the bodies of 20 dead 6 year olds? I'm really happy that they get to spend Christmas with their loved ones.

I don't really mind SNL's tacky tribute as much as I minded people's reverence for a comedy show's attempt to garner sympathy-by-association for a tragedy that happened far away. It's like all these local monuments to 9/11 where they had nothing to do with it. Also, I didn't know so many people were closeted SNL watchers which is just really offensive.

2012-12-25 02:09:44 PM
A man hits "submit" to IndieGogo for a flex funding campaign that raises funds for vulture campaigns raising money after any national tragedy. He thinks to himself "I made a difference in the world. I am a hero."

A hero is someone who puts his life on the line for a greater cause. Cops, firefighters, soldiers, and very often teachers too. Screw the lot of you who say otherwise.

Since we're all defining heroes, let me dork out and quote the great Batman, since it seems appropriate:

I'd argue that the signs of shared humanity in this country are some of the saving graces from a pretty unending flow of bullshiat. Granted, some people go too far, but it's reassuring when most recognize we're all in this together. I point to national disaster response as an example. You had people from some of the worst hit areas on the Gulf Coast donating what they could to those left in Sandy's wake. It makes it easier to bear the size able portion of the country that are under the notion we're all on our own competing against each other.

I am reminded of the Bob Weir interview on MTV after Jerry Garcia died. He said, "Hey, if you see me walking down the street. It's ok to internalize your grief. To keep that to yourself." There just comes a time when it's time to step out of yourself and wonder "Is this going to look self serving and ghoulish?" Inevitably, the answer will almost be "yes".

I would bet that the cops doing this thing are not driving down the street announcing over their car loudspeakers "HEY, IT'S US THE GUYS FROM THE NEXT TOWN OVER. WE HERE BECAUSE WE'RE AWESOME AND WE DO THINGS FOR PEOPLE. FELIZ NAVIDAD"

So unfortunately, we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Jurisdictional problems. Not really. Just swear them in at the new jurisdiction. Good to go.

Newtown police arrived at the scene very quickly when notified. They went in the building immediatly (unlike Columbine where police dithered around outside for quite awhile). I read somewhere that the shooter killed himself soon after learning Police were in the building. So, I have no problem calling Watertown police heroes. At the time, Newtown police went into a building I wouldn't have gone into because I would have been very busy pissing myself. That quick action probably saved a bunch of lives because the shooter was far from low on ammo when he died. Newtown police did a fine job at the scene during and after the crime. They also had to contend with a media circus of reporters trying to get their noses in peoples very private business. A police officer was assigned to each grieving family for this reason. I imagine all police personnel worked as many hours as they could stand. Personally, I find the inability to give positive recognition to the people of Watertown, all of them, to be a serious personality defect. They have handled this horrible episode with considerable grace. The professionals have been professional and I can find no fault with their performance.

It is laudable that neighboring town police departments would fill in on Christmas Day to give their peers a moments rest. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

I wouldn't necessarily call the actions of neighbouring police heroic, but it is a damn nice gesture to their colleagues, and a sacrifice on their part. SPIFFY tag appropriate for them.

Anyone who puts themselves in danger to protect other is a hero. Whether that be a Coastguard jump diver, your local fire brigade, or a small town cop who has never had to draw a service weapon in anger diving into that scene from hell.

I was just saying in another thread I needed to start reading comics again to "lighten up" and was going to zip up to a local comic shop soon for some reading swag. Thanks for the reminder of how awesome Bats is, cuz now I know one of the titles I want to grab.

Katchaa: A hero is someone who puts his life on the line for a greater cause. Cops, firefighters, soldiers, and very often teachers too. Screw the lot of you who say otherwise.

Heros more often are just ordinary people doing extrordinary things because it's the right thing to do. Hero's are seldom self appointed; most downplay the enormity of what they have done. Most heroic acts are done out of selflessness.

Continuing to do your job, even when given the opportunity to walk away (cops would be allowed a mental health leave under these circumstances) would be one measure of heroics. I think Weaver's descriptionof a hero was spot-on otherwise.

Weaver95: BravadoGT: SilentStrider: Wow. Thats... Awesome. Deserved hero tag.

How exactly are the Newton cops "heroes?"

a hero is someone who does their job even when they'd rather just pack it in and call it a day.Or as I like to call these types of peoples; wage workers...these guys couldn't stop the horrible massacre at the school, nobody could..but they've gotta be feeling like crap just the same.  instead of the usual christmas prep of parties and excited kids the cops have had to review the scene of a mass murder, write reports on the dead kids, and help clean up the mess afterwards.  then there was the funerals to attend, explanations to be made (because you always have to explain these sorts of things to someone who just doesn't understand), and the national media monday morning quarterbacking the whole town.

And the proverbial 'hero' tag high bar is dropped another notch...

you report your kid missing, big farking deal. cops kid missing? heaven help you if you even walked past the kid in the mall last week. cops galore en mass rip it apart for weeks until kiddie is found alive or dead. and someone will do prison time for it whether or not they are guilty.

your wife/husband/child etc gets shot dead, local law will put in HOURS on the case. cop gets plugged guess what happens. you know the score, you weren't born yesterday.

mental deficients with low IQ's and deeply rooted psychological imbalances who are incredibly well armed and carry multiple styles of restraints & just love to use them aren't heroes, they are used tools. they consider themselves above you and I and fully defend their club members regardless of what crimes they commit. fark the whole lot of them.

HEROES: good dedicated hard working ambulance volunteers, nurses, doctors, school teachers, animal shelter/rescue volunteers, therapists, moms & dads that love their kids and put them first while trying to raise them well - this list goes on and on. these people are heroes. your law enforcement friends can suck it.

pissnmoan: Jurisdictional problems.

I don't know much about the story of what happened, but from what you wrote, I can see giving them a day off sure.

As far as awarding the hero tag, I don't see that one. Sure it sucks you did all that, but lets be honest, police get so many benefits and perks, it comes with the territory. My hats off to them, but it's still their job. If it's too much, they are free to quit at any time. Just make sure they hang up their gun, benefits packages, retirement, job security, social bj's from everyone fawning over them when they are out and about, and usage of authority whenever it suits them (ok so the last one only some are guilty of). It's still rough, and they deserve every benefit they get. But hero tag? I don't think so. A hero is the teacher who hid her kids and died. A cop comin in armed and with backup...awesome, amazing, worthy of laurels. But not quite a hero. Hero is a special word tossed around too much these days.

Then again, maybe the Hero tag is for the other cops that gave up their Christmas day off to give the Newtown cops a break...?

He's the magical libertarian/republican who can't bother to defend the second amendment anymore, loves big government, wants more taxes, loves socialized health care, hates capitolism, and used to hate cops but now loves them except if they arrest OWS. Shhhhhh! He really is a libertarian/republican, ya gotta believe him.

panem et circenses

Seriously;

That is what society has come to. If you are not familiar with the saying; it means bread and circuses or, in this situation, bread and games.

The phrase was the result of roman emperors providing food and entertainment to the masses; so they wouldn't notice that they were getting royally screwed.

Now, however, instead of gladiators and crusty bread; we get fast food and 24 hour news. It keeps us entertained while the politicians, along with special interest groups spend trillions of dollars on utter crap.

/ both sides share the blame; no one is innocent. Yes, I know you know of some mitigating factor for you're side; the truth is, unless that fact is 100% likely to get us out of our present circumstances; I ask you, how is it a mitigating factor? I know, I know; the other side is worse. They have been saying that about those bastards for millennia

Wow. This thread has more douchebaggyness than a politics thread about giving healthcare to the poor and needing.
