Police should not be taking any time off from that town. Especially after what just happened. Shame on them.

What if those NRA guys come back and hit another school?

a hero is someone who does their job even when they'd rather just pack it in and call it a day.  these guys couldn't stop the horrible massacre at the school, nobody could..but they've gotta be feeling like crap just the same.  instead of the usual christmas prep of parties and excited kids the cops have had to review the scene of a mass murder, write reports on the dead kids, and help clean up the mess afterwards.  then there was the funerals to attend, explanations to be made (because you always have to explain these sorts of things to someone who just doesn't understand), and the national media monday morning quarterbacking the whole town.

And despite all that, they did it.  they got up every day, gulped down coffee...and took pictures of dead kids, drew diagrams of the bodies, and wrote up reports based on evidence gathered.  then they went and patrolled the town and faced the public.  being a small town, the cops likely knew the families.  there is no way this could have been easy for them to do.  it takes a toll.  one that most cops probably wouldn't talk about even if you asked 'em.

that's heroic.  doing the job even when you'd rather just say 'f*ck it' and walk away disgusted with humanity and live on an island by yourself.

I cannot imagine how horrific it must have been to respond to that scene. Having to see and deal with the bodies of 20 dead 6 year olds? I'm really happy that they get to spend Christmas with their loved ones.

A hero is somebody who does his job even when he doesn't want to. Thanks Weaver95 for clearing that up. I guess we can consider the soldiers marching the Jews into the gas chambers heroes because they were just doing their job, even though they didn't want to.

I heard about this on the news this morning.
Damned nice, all things considering.
Some of those guys weren't even responders to the shooting --- but the crap that went on there they still see the other 364 days of the year. Having a moment to put that aside and be grateful that you aren't dead or slipping on fresh blood is good for them.

I don't really mind SNL's tacky tribute as much as I minded people's reverence for a comedy show's attempt to garner sympathy-by-association for a tragedy that happened far away. It's like all these local monuments to 9/11 where they had nothing to do with it. Also, I didn't know so many people were closeted SNL watchers which is just really offensive.

2012-12-25 02:09:44 PM
A man hits "submit" to IndieGogo for a flex funding campaign that raises funds for vulture campaigns raising money after any national tragedy. He thinks to himself "I made a difference in the world. I am a hero."

2012-12-25 02:10:45 PM
A hero is someone who puts his life on the line for a greater cause. Cops, firefighters, soldiers, and very often teachers too. Screw the lot of you who say otherwise.

This. How would they wipe that from their mind? I wouldn't be surprised if there are a not a few extra substance dependent people after this.

Since we're all defining heroes, let me dork out and quote the great Batman, since it seems appropriate:

"A hero can be anyone. Even someone who does something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders, to let him know the world hadn't ended."

I'd argue that the signs of shared humanity in this country are some of the saving graces from a pretty unending flow of bullshiat. Granted, some people go too far, but it's reassuring when most recognize we're all in this together. I point to national disaster response as an example. You had people from some of the worst hit areas on the Gulf Coast donating what they could to those left in Sandy's wake. It makes it easier to bear the size able portion of the country that are under the notion we're all on our own competing against each other.

/OMG fark you...fark you for trolling in a thread about dead kids and the men and women who not only had to respond to this situation, but clean up the mess. I am reminded of the Bob Weir interview on MTV after Jerry Garcia died. He said, "Hey, if you see me walking down the street. It's ok to internalize your grief. To keep that to yourself." There just comes a time when it's time to step out of yourself and wonder "Is this going to look self serving and ghoulish?" Inevitably, the answer will almost be "yes".

I would bet that the cops doing this thing are not driving down the street announcing over their car loudspeakers "HEY, IT'S US THE GUYS FROM THE NEXT TOWN OVER. WE HERE BECAUSE WE'RE AWESOME AND WE DO THINGS FOR PEOPLE. FELIZ NAVIDAD"

So unfortunately, we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Jurisdictional problems. Not really. Just swear them in at the new jurisdiction. Good to go.

Newtown police arrived at the scene very quickly when notified. They went in the building immediatly (unlike Columbine where police dithered around outside for quite awhile). I read somewhere that the shooter killed himself soon after learning Police were in the building. So, I have no problem calling Watertown police heroes. At the time, Newtown police went into a building I wouldn't have gone into because I would have been very busy pissing myself. That quick action probably saved a bunch of lives because the shooter was far from low on ammo when he died. Newtown police did a fine job at the scene during and after the crime. They also had to contend with a media circus of reporters trying to get their noses in peoples very private business. A police officer was assigned to each grieving family for this reason. I imagine all police personnel worked as many hours as they could stand. Personally, I find the inability to give positive recognition to the people of Watertown, all of them, to be a serious personality defect. They have handled this horrible episode with considerable grace. The professionals have been professional and I can find no fault with their performance.

It is laudable that neighboring town police departments would fill in on Christmas Day to give their peers a moments rest. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Now are you going to behave like an adult or not?
