As you sit down for your Christmas meal today, remember what was going on in the Ardennes in December of 1944. Men like Durning gave so much and many more like him gave far more than he did.

Damn I just saw him a couple of weeks ago in The Sting.  Excellent actor.  And his military record is farkin' jaw-dropping.

Rest in peace Mr. Durning.  And thank you.

Character Actor: a polite way of saying, "He better be good, cause he ain't gonna get by on looks alone."

If given a choice between being an A list actor or a character actor like Durning or Borgnine, I would definitely choose the latter. I must be awesome doing so many roles.

No disrespect intended but Tracey Walter of Jersey City N.J. is the definition of character actor.

There are two kinds of character actors in this world, my friend; the dead who are remembered, and the unknown like us, eh Blondie?

theewhiterhino: Dog Day Afternoon, Oh Brother where Art Thou, Hudsucker Proxy, and the voice of Peter Griffin's father. Nice career. You're gone, but will live on forever.

If you want to see a good synopsis of life as a character actor, check out "That Guy...Who Was In That Thing"

At one time he was engaged to Tootsie.

RIP 89yrs is a pretty good run, especially when a whole country was trying to kill him back in '44.

Mart Laar's beard shaver: RIP, Senator Samuel Chapman (but he got to die twice)

I met him on the set of this movie. He was truly incredible in his ability to snap in and out of character. He was continually poking fun at Kirk Douglas who had real problems remembering his lines.

I gained a real appreciation for how hard movie actors work when filming.

Ed Finnerty: He was good. But he was no Michael Caine.

"I never turned down anything and never argued with any producer or director,"

He WAS our Michael Caine. Durning defined the term character actor. He always made his parts memorable and distinctive without upstaging the primary actors. He will be missed.

He'll be missed by many, including myself. :-(

When A Stranger Calls scare the farking bejeebers out of me as a 14-year-old babysitter.  Slept with the lights on for a week afterward.
