I think George H. W. Bush passes next. He 88 and has been in the hospital for over a month plus the last few days there's been strange news stories about it.

Still one of my favourite movies of all time!!

Znuh: Good gravy, who knew he was so hardcore? "Killed a German soldier with a rock".

Damn.

FTFA: His father was unable to work, having lost a leg and been gassed during World War I, so his mother supported the family by washing the uniforms of West Point cadets. The younger Durning himself would barely survive World War II. He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

Holy crap. He WAS a badass.

/thanks for highlighting that, Znuh, or I never would have read the article.

They were trying to get him out of the hospital for Xmas, but he's just not recovering

Nelson Mandela has also been in hospital for over a month.

What a great story. If Mr. Durning had spent the rest of his life merely being a kind and decent man working at an ordinary job, he'd've been a credit to humanity. As it is, he gave of himself to strangers (who, granted, paid him to do so), making his presence much bigger in the process.

No disrespect intended but Tracey Walter of Jersey City N.J. is the definition of character actor.

That scene, the way it's played out, not just by Durling but also by all the other character actors at the table is just fantastic.

The Washington Post obituary doesn't do this war hero justice. Read the obituary done by the New York Times , to really learn about Charles Durning:

"Then came World War II, and he enlisted in the Army. His combat experiences were harrowing. He was in the first wave of troops to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day and his unit's lone survivor of a machine-gun ambush. In Belgium he was stabbed in hand-to-hand combat with a German soldier, whom he bludgeoned to death with a rock. Fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, he and the rest of his company were captured and forced to march through a pine forest at Malmedy, the scene of an infamous massacre in which the Germans opened fire on almost 90 prisoners. Mr. Durning was among the few to escape.

By the war's end he had been awarded a Silver Star for valor and three Purple Hearts, having suffered gunshot and shrapnel wounds as well. He spent months in hospitals and was treated for psychological trauma."

Does Jack Klugman count? He served in WWII, but I haven't found accounts of him being a badass. If so, then with him, Daniel Inouye and now Durning the trifecta is complete.

If given a choice between being an A list actor or a character actor like Durning or Borgnine, I would definitely choose the latter. I must be awesome doing so many roles.
