Here in Australia we only have 6 states and 2 territories which are pretty much state-lite.

I live in the state with the reputation as being the 'bizarre sex crime and murder' state, not because we have a lot of sex crimes or murders, but when we do they're reliably pretty bizarre.

Within about an hour's drive you can travel through the lightly populated districts between Snowtown and Kapunda and Truro in South Australia's mid-north region and travel past the sites of literally dozens of final resting places of victims of some very bizarre murders and serial killings since the 1970's.

Our crime rate is low and it's a relatively safe place but when it comes to the freakish and bizarre, we're seriously overrepresenting.

Gergesa: We need more cryptids.

The only cryptid I've ever seen is the thunderbird. Thought it was just a regular turkey vulture till I got close enough to realize that roadkill it was next to was a fracking deer and not like a rodent.

schief2: valkore: Chupacabra Sandwich: Arizona: Phoenix Lights?

*clicks*

No some dumb made up bullshiat.

Definitely some bullshiat. Four young people in 2009 without any cell phones to record said huge craft. In fact, the hell were they doing in "a desert west of Phoenix" anyhow? Oh wait, they were out tripping balls. Now this story makes sense.

Yeah, so they go with a "UFO encounter" story for Arizona, but not the Phoenix Lights:

Or the one that Hollywood made a movie out of:

But instead some bullshiat story a few stoners made up out in the desert. Fail.

Most of the list could be summed up by your last sentence.

Not my state, but my dad moved nearby this place after my parents got divorced. I went there a couple times as a teenager. Really neat, and they're still not sure how the guy built some of the things at Coral Castle.

#31 - New Mexico
We always called her La Llorona (pronounced yorona) or The weeper

Always down by the river looking for her drowned children and ready to take you in their place.
Old folk tale to keep kids away from the water.

The first story arc of the Batwoman comic dealt with her. It was a cool story, with great art.

TuteTibiImperes: My first thought was that it was something from Dover AFB as well.   AFAIK they don't fly Chinooks out of Dover, it's pretty much a cargo plane base, C-5s and C-17s, though I imagine other military craft do land and operate out of there on occasion.  It's also one of the largest military morgues, a lot of the deceased from the wars in the middle-east land in Dover, and it was used to help store bodies after the 9/11 attacks.

Back in the 80's and 90's at least, you'd see chinooks all over new castle county, though those were all from the new castle national guard base.

Angry Monkey: The North Carolina poop monster?? Really? It was a fungus! So many other cooler choices in this state. Like the Devil's Tramping Ground, or the road where you can roll up hill.

/durn whippersnappers!

Or even the Seneca Guns....

The entry for Kansas is pure crap. Stull was originally called Deer Creek after the creek near town, then was changed to Stull in the 1880s after a prominent family that lived near there.

Stull cemetery was thought haunted, but only the old church building that was torn down in 2002 or so, not the whole cemetery. I never heard anyone talk about winds paralyzing them, just rumors that glass bottles would not break there. Gateway to hell, my ass.

I think much of the rural United States mirrors that condition. the crime rate in rural areas is a very low but when they do have crime is often violent and very weird.
