Such a shame watching the Steelers shoot themselves in the foot three weeks in a row. They blew every chance they had. Defense allowed Cincy like 18 rushing yards but hasn't been able to stop more than 5% of passes it seems. Costly mistakes, turnovers, etc. No excuse.

The Great Tiebreaker Spreadsheet
with your host, RminusQ

Today's episode: 2012 Week 16

In the AFC, it's all over but the seeding:
justpredictions.webs.com
Cincinnati's win over Pittsburgh closed the field, and Baltimore's destruction of the Giants assured four repeat division champions. All but Baltimore could still claim homefield, and New England could land anywhere from 1 to 4.
With nothing big left to settle visible here, let's look at division-vs-division records. The East and South tied 8-8, the North beat the West 10-6 despite Denver sweeping. Not one AFC division beat its NFC opponent; only the North managed to tie the relatively weak NFC East.
Should Cincinnati beat Baltimore, the Ravens still win the division on division record, due to sweeping Cleveland.

In the NFC, there's five teams for two spots:
justpredictions.webs.com
The winner of Redskins/Cowboys takes the NFC East and the 4 seed. If they tie, Washington wins it. If Dallas wins (whether or not the Giants also win), Dallas and Washington are level at 4-2 on division record before common games settles the score: Dallas beat three AFC North teams, while Washington only beat two. Note that the East, for all its much-malignedness, could have three winning teams, and will have a combined record of 31-33. They tied the NFC South, they tied the AFC North, they split with the NFC North, and they lost 3-1 to the NFC West. Also note that the Giants beat both the North and West champions (assuming SF beats ARZ), but were likely undone by stupid losses within their division.

In the North, Minnesota beats Chicago in a tiebreaker based on division record. Thus the Bears need a win and a Vikings loss to make the playoffs. Those two things would be enough, though. The Vikings now control their destiny after the Giants laid a gigantic turd in their last two games.
Should the 49ers or Seahawks tie next week, and wind up even in the standings, San Francisco still wins the division, because of Seattle's losses to Miami and Detroit. St. Louis could be the second team in the eight-division era to go unbeaten within their division and miss the playoffs.

Now it's time for THE GRID:
justpredictions.webs.com

In the AFC, the four division champions all played each other, and a simple head-to-head tiebreaker will fully seed them. For that reason, New England could move ahead of Houston and Denver if they win, or behind Baltimore if they lose. Indianapolis has secured the 5 seed over Cincinnati because of similar games. As visible on the AFC game-by-game, Indy split with JAX, beat MIA, beat CLE, beat KC. Cincy split with CLE, lost to MIA, beat JAX, beat KC.
In the NFC, Atlanta is far and away #1 (but I've got more to say about them). The East champion is locked into #4. Either New York or Washington would be ahead of Minnesota or Chicago at 9-7, primarily on conference record (though Washington has a head-to-head win over Minnesota for good measure). Dallas can't be a wild card; if they get to 9 wins, they must have beaten Washington and that gives them the division; then the Redskins are ahead of the Giants (and the Giants are thus, out). If Seattle and Green Bay wind up 11-5 (with San Francisco losing, so Seattle wins the division), the head-to-head tiebreaker gives the bye to Seattle. Thanks, replacement refs!
Sadly, after all the effort put into calculating SOS and SOV, there is now only one place left where the SOV tiebreaker could possibly be needed: if Arizona and Carolina finish 6-10. Because that would have Arizona beating San Francisco, the Cardinals would definitely win that tiebreaker (for 13th place in the conference). But Di's GRAF TOO is still awesome.

Part IV of TGTBSS is the Strength of Schedule chart.
justpredictions.webs.com

Oh, hey. Atlanta. Funny seeing you on the bottom of the graph as you have been every single week we've had this graph. That said, they will not break the record for easiest schedule in the eight-division era. They could tie the record (opponents' combined record of 106-150 = .414) with a win and losses by Detroit and Arizona. Indianapolis and Cincinnati have coasted to AFC wild cards on ridiculously easy schedules themselves, but both are playing a difficult opponent in Week 17 which will bump the SOS up a bit. At the top end, Detroit and Arizona might have had a chance if not playing such a tough schedule. The Giants have the hardest schedule among contenders, while Oakland and San Diego have the easiest schedules among teams with losing records.

Now the projected draft order.
justpredictions.webs.com
Note that the last 12 spots are pending playoffs. The ESS column refers to the current record of all 16 opponents (even future ones, counting divisional opponents twice). Each team's ESS will go up by 6, plus 2 if they lose, plus somewhere from 0 to 2 based on their strength opponents.
Kansas City and Jacksonville are locked into 1 and 2; Kansas City secures the top pick with a loss. If teams from opposite conferences have equal wins and SOS, a coin flip is used to select the first round order, this can happen no earlier than the #4 pick.

And for good measure, here's the key to the colorful madness above:
justpredictions.webs.com
Note that I changed some colors a bit; the text is now blue instead of orange for a situation where one team must win out and the other lose out to be tied (orange doesn't show up well on red).

And here's what we know about the playoff bracket!
justpredictions.webs.com
(once the 3-6 game is played, I grey out the side that doesn't apply anymore).

(3) 6 San Francisco
(6) 7 Seattle
(10) 8 Baltimore
(8) 9 Indianapolis
(13) 10 Chicago
(12) 11 Minnesota
(15) 12 New York (G)

(24) 28 Cleveland
(29) 29 Philadelphia
(30) 30 Oakland
(31) 31 Jacksonville
(32) 32 Kansas City

The Browns and Redskins* are too damn high: +4
The Titans are to damn low: -6

The parentheses are ESPN's rankings.

*I don't think the Redskins are too low, but my numbers say so. I think my system weighs early games too heavily, since SOV is all 1.000 or 0.000 early in the season. I'll think about how I want to deal with that for next year.

Really the Giants at 12? They got blown out the last two weeks in a row and aren't going to make the playoffs. Washington beat Baltimore and Minnesota but your system of pulling teams rankings out of your ass is spot on.

They should at least be higher than Green Bay. They did beat them.

Also I am not complaining because the Skins are still in the top 10 and are one game away from the playoffs but how does winning a game drop you down a spot.

Ah well it does not matter.
Hail Skins!
Sunday night will be incredible.

Pick13: Really the Giants at 12? They got blown out the last two weeks in a row and aren't going to make the playoffs. Washington beat Baltimore and Minnesota but your system of pulling teams rankings out of your ass is spot on.

I agree, hence V0.9.0, my system takes into account a team's win/loss as well as the margin of victory of each game and the SOV of the team they beat in the week that they beat them. Since early teams have drastic SOV's, beating a 2-0-0 team at 1.000 is much less impressive than a 8-0-0 team at 1.000, but right now my system ranks them the same. Clearly it rewards early success much more than late season success, and that leads to awkward results.

I'm thinking about how to fix that for next year.

Seattle should probably be higber. If the weird GB/SF loss, Seattle win scenario happens and they get the 2 seed, I think they'll make the Super Bowl. As long as they don't have to go on the road, they are amazing.

Yes but Arians is coaching a playoff team. What's Omar (thought to be a "great" coach) doing besides figuring out what color to paint the kitchen next month?

Steelers really whiffed on Haley and they need to light a fire under Tomlin because he's just as clueless. The team is regularly not mentally prepared and anemic on offense with a top 3 receiving corps and a great quarterback. We really thought pushing out Arians would fix a lot of those problems but clearly not. They've fallen to #22 offense in the league... with the #1 defense. Cam Cameron was fired for being #19!

At least the Steelers won a Super Bowl with Arians... Can't even make the playoffs with Haley. I guess we should be careful what we wish for.

2. 8 Receptions, 153 yards, 2 TDs
3. 22 Rush, 226 yards, 1 TD
*Bonus - only one of these players won. Who was it?

Season's Leadings
1. Putting the game away is something that many teams can't do this year. This player knows about that, though, driving in dagger after dagger on the ground. He leads the NFL inRushing TDs in the 4th Quarter.

2. A few weeks ago we saw the surprising stat that the most stuffed-RB was Arian Foster. Butwho is dropped for a loss or no gain the least?I apologize in advance if Gruden sees this and makes this guy his GRUDEN GRINDER and then talks about him for a solid hour next season.

3. In the red zone, real estate comes at a premium. It used to be the domain of the dominant tight end, but this year the leader is a WR.Which WR leads the league in red zone catches?

Name That Team

1. It's time to reward a little fail. This team is the only team in the NFL tomiss two extra-points.

2. Which team gets coal in their stocking forforcing the least amount of fumbles, at 6?

3. Which team is theworst at converting on 4th down, at a paltry 20%?

I'm sorry, but Seattle is the best team in the country right now. I don't see any other team in the league with a dominant passing, running, special teams, and defensive play. Every single aspect of the Seahawks are clicking and in full gear just in time for the playoffs. I don't think there's a single team out there who could easily beat Seattle, and I'd only trust a handful (NE, Denver) to really put up a fight.

I'm going to pretend your post is serious, but no, Arizona shouldn't be in the top 10 since they are only 5-10, and as I said, overall record counts as well. But it would explain why they are above two 6-9 teams when it doesn't look like could beat your average peewee league team at the moment. It also explains why the Giants are ahead of the Redskins, since the Giants had early success compared to the Redskins.

Also, there are people who evaluate teams for a living in Vegas, I am not one of them, just a Farker with a little too much time on his hands.

There is only one combination of playoff scenarios that would make the Packers unhappy: The Packers not getting the 1st round bye with the Giants somehow making the playoffs. They *really* don't want to play the Gnats.

They'd be pretty upset if they lost and SF lost and the Seahawks got HFA (Since the Falcons will lose their first game).

"I agree, hence V0.9.0, my system takes into account a team's win/loss as well as the margin of victory of each game and the SOV of the team they beat in the week that they beat them. "

Considering that San Francisco is one of the best teams in the league with the formerly #1 defense and Seattle beat the holy living shiat out of them, how did a system that takes at least some of those things into account move them DOWN?

Thar right there would be the Seahawks trolling the entire NFC for the second straight season, and it would get even trollier if the Boys and the Lions were to win (you'd get SF (5th seed) traveling to Dallas (4th seed) and Minnesota (6th seed) traveling to GB (3rd seed), with Seattle being the 2 seed).
