Me neither. Tarentino directed it, enough proof for me.

Neither do I.

It's hard because this is sort of a Hitler vs. Stalin scenario for me, except instead of the two worst dictators of the last 100 years it's the two most overrated American film directors of the last 100 years.

I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Compared to Spike Lee, Tarantino is Hitchcock, Scorsese, Spielberg and Kubrick rolled into one.

There are YouTube videos better than anything Spike Lee has ever done.

He's not a very good filmmaker and he's a pretentious ass, but he's one hell of a rabblerouser. Even if they're artistically lacking, his movies get people talking. Typically while they're still in the theater.

Never mind that Spike is factually incorrect.  His ancestors, if that is even true, were not stolen from Africa.  They were sold by other Africans.  Hell, his ancestors may have been sellers.

Or not.  Either way, it is his prerogative to not see the movie.  But for someone who says he isn't going to comment on it because he isn't going to see it, he is doing a fair amount of commenting on it.

Before this thread turns into a racist free-for-all, Spike Lee is a pretty damned talented filmmaker. May not appeal to the white crowd, and yes, he's put out some real turkeys, but he's got talent.

Just like Tarentino, who shall we say, has not exactly been racially sensitive in the past with his movies.

2012-12-24 04:41:46 PM
And I STILL say Tarentino should have been given a chance at a James Bond film.

I dug Malcolm X, Inside Man and 25th Hour. Those were some pretty neat flicks.

"The Holocaust was not a heist film. It was a holocaust." - from my review of the Inside Man. How dare he trivialize the Holocaust.

That's not what he said, idiot.

People like Spike Lee love to say "white men went to Africa and stole our ancestors, white men are bad".

Now, while slavery is a horrible thing, there was a reason why they went to Africa, y'know? Hint: There was an existing slave trade down there.

It wasn't "Negro Catching Time".

Also, Slavery is not something limited to black people y'know? Even white people have been slaves. You just can't pick and choose a moment in history for it to be relevant and discard the others. But then again, Spike is American and thus he thinks the world revolves around American issues.

2012-12-24 05:15:28 PM
I think we should hate Spike Lee, after all his first name Spike is a junkie term for a hypodermic needle. His last name Lee is the general who fought to prolong slavery. So he is a junkie who loves slavery, I knew it.

2012-12-24 05:15:32 PM
Sigh. Kind of sadly ironic that Spike Lee has fallen this far when he was, at one point, one of the people to defend the film "Coonskin" against critics like Al Sharpton who claimed that they didn't need to see it to hate it.

That being said, Quentin Tarantino is also a huge overrated douchenozzle who has probably needed a few good cockpunches over the years.

/still love Pulp Fiction though

Spike, come back when you're relevant again.

2012-12-24 05:15:46 PM
Spike Lee can go fark himself. His whole career has been built around being a whiney black man and now he wants to whine about something he doesn't even want to take the time to see. Just ignorant. The only difference between him and every other entitled whiney minority is could afford a camera. Watch the movie then biatch about it or just shut your mouth.

Spike and others have to continue to the narrative that the African American is always the victim.  Never mind that a handful of white slave traders versus a continent, armed only with muskets (1 shot per 30 seconds or more) somehow subjugated and enslaved an entire tribe.

The fact is unless blacks were selling other blacks to the whites, none of this would have happened.  The whites would have their a--es handed to them within 50 yards of the shoreline from Angola to the Gold Coast.  Not unlike Captain James Tiberius Cook had his ass handed to him on the beach in Hawaii.

The whole historical narative of somehow a handful of smelly whites armed with primitive muskets somehow subjugates an african continent always baffled me.  Think about it.  The numerical advantage, not to mention the tactical knowledge of the local terrain, all had to favor the local tribes.  And bows and arrows / spears were proven as good or better in some cases than muskets, particularly in melee fighting, which should have been the scenario had there been sufficient numbers of blacks showing up to attack the whites and beat them down.

I suspect the whites were met on the shores with willing black trading partners, delivering other blacks, unwilling, who were the slaves.

I suspect the black narrative today doesn't like this story too well, but it is probably how it went down, much more so than the whole "europeans victimized and conquered africans" narrative that seems to be the basis of the angry butthurt that people like Spike Lee (and to be fair, many whites as well) sell as fact today.

Spike knows how to piss people off and get paid to do so, so I guess he has that going for him.

\Yes, Tarantino can be predictable, but he's a fun predictable.  Just don't need to hear him talking about anything.

Well then you must think Spike Lee is really awful (they are) because Tarantino's films are just plain stupid. I know I am supposed to be all super cool and "get it" and find them hilarious and deeply meaningful. Nope. They're just dumb. It's sort of like watching Shrek. Mildly amusing but all the people you are watching it with are laughing like it's the funniest creation in history. So you learn to hate it for that reason.

Lee has made at least 1 movie that I would find difficult for anyone to hate: Inside Man. It's a really good film. But... it's not a "Spike Lee film". It wasn't a Spike Lee one-dimensional piece about race, but basically a director-for-hire film that Ron Howard was originally going to shoot.

Generation_D: I suspect the whites were met on the shores with willing black trading partners, delivering other blacks, unwilling, who were the slaves.

You don't have to suspect it. That's how it was. During their trips across the African coastline while trying to reach India, the Portuguese found several places where slave trading took place and introduced the system to their European neighbors.

Again, WHY would the Europeans go to Africa for slaves? They didn't wake up one day and said "let's catch ourselves some negroes". Heck, when the Spaniards started buying slaves, they did it because the Caribbean natives weren't up to snuff and were dying, so Spaniards thought "y'know what? Let's go get some of those dark guys our Portuguese neighbors are getting."

Again, WHY would the Spaniards who were conquering the Caribbean at the time, just get up and say "Let's go to the other side of the world and see what we can find to bring them back here" if the slave trade wasn't already existing?

Anyway, just my opinion, which means little.

Didn't the Portuguese slave trade start as an off-shoot of the Muslim slave trade that was already happening in North Africa? Then again, the Barbary pirates at that point were pretty much enslaving ANYBODY that they caught so it wasn't really exclusive towards one race or continent.
