Amazing. The Grandfather of the political obfuscation and discord is now telling the party to be more passive.

This guy literally made tape recordings for politicians teaching them how to be divisive.

At that point in time, that's what they did in order to win. Now, he recognizes the need to be inclusive, rather than divisive.

You can fault the man for his ethics, but he's consistent in his intentions. He's all about winning.

You know I'm on your side of the same-sex marriage argument and all, but you should really consider changing the x-axis title of your graph from "decade" to "decade of birth." Otherwise, it's just going to confuse the hell out of a lot of people.

For those who weren't around back then:

Language: A Key Mechanism of Control

Newt Gingrich's 1996 GOPAC memo

As you know, one of the key points in the GOPAC tapes is that "language matters." In the video "We are a Majority," Language is listed as a key mechanism of control used by a majority party, along with Agenda, Rules, Attitude and Learning. As the tapes have been used in training sessions across the country and mailed to candidates we have heard a plaintive plea: "I wish I could speak like Newt."

That takes years of practice. But, we believe that you could have a significant impact on your campaign and the way you communicate if we help a little. That is why we have created this list of words and phrases.

This list is prepared so that you might have a directory of words to use in writing literature and mail, in preparing speeches, and in producing electronic media. The words and phrases are powerful. Read them. Memorize as many as possible. And remember that like any tool, these words will not help if they are not used.

Often we search hard for words to define our opponents. Sometimes we are hesitant to use contrast. Remember that creating a difference helps you. These are powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast. Apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.

FTFA: "he suggested that the party (and he himself) could accept a distinction between a "marriage in a church from a legal document issued by the state" -- the latter being acceptable."

Hmmm. To me that reads like he'd just be ok with civil unions for same sex couples and in order to make it more "fair" and preserve the religious right's claim to the word marriage he's willing to limit all the straight non-churchgoing heathens to civil union status too.

Well, it's actually "cohort by decade", but yes, the labeling is less than clear. On the other hand, confusion prompts questions; questions prompt explanations; and explanations prompt understanding.

The GSS-2012 round of data should be out by April; I'll probably update it then.

It would be nice if they learn to put their reactionary attitudes into the closet, like they've mostly learned to for miscegenation. Less likely to trigger civil war.

I think he's just using the 'get more votes' angle as a cover to the real reason; the usual cause of staunch republicans rethinking the idea of civil rights for homosexuals: someone in his close family just came out of the closet to him.

Personally, my vote is on it being Callista.

So he can go in the pile of horrible human beings who either believe homosexuals are inferior and deserve inferior treatment or those willing to send inferior treatment their way in order to move ahead politically.

He is a sleazy piece of human garbage. I put him among the worst examples of humanity, to include such winners as the guy who set the trap the firefighters or shot up the school. And in case someone thinks I'm using hyperbole: folks like gingrich cause far more harm with their power indirectly than all the mass-killers of the last few decades combined. And when it comes to those like Gingrich, they aren't just causing that damage by ignorantly pursuing bad policy, but by greedily jumping in with both feet.

Newt is an amoral human being who will take any position that he thinks will help advance the cause of keeping himself and the GOP in power. That he's flipped his stance on marriage equality suggests that we've reached the tipping point, or are at least very close to it. I'm convinced marriage equality in all 50 states, with federal recognition, is inevitable in the next decade with or without  the Supreme Court, if it wasn't Newt wouldn't be changing his position now. Either that or he thinks the SCOTUS ruling in favor of equality is a done deal and he wants to get ahead of the story.

Unlikely. In his late 60s, his life expectancy is only about 20 years. He'll likely live to see the first generational cohort that's majority unaffiliated arrive into the demographics, but not to when the unaffiliated become the overall majority, nor anywhere near when the atheists take the lead.

And that's without addressing his chances of lasting until the fundamentalist Muslims take charge.
