People treating politics like football and putting policy in a "must win" dynamic is what's making our government completely ineffective.

Is that why the GOP won't officialy make exceptions to abortion bans when the women are raped, impregnated by their fathers, or literally about to die?

No, massive and widespread corruption is what's making our government completely ineffective. The football mentality just makes things worse.

I got a letter in the mail from the NRA Saturday.

I get them from time to time, usually they're questionnaires or attempts to get me to sign up. The language is always a little misleading and inflammatory but this one was pretty amazing.

I don't have it in front of me to reference, but it mentioned "the enemies of freedom" several times, and referred to the NRA membership card saying, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Never has there been a more powerful symbol of our freedoms."

Tone deaf is about right.

WBC = dicks to dead soldiers and schoolchildren.

Not even remotely comparable.

If we are going to put a ban in place, can we ban large capacity mags instead of 'assault rifles'?

There is nothing about the appearance of a gun that makes it more lethal. Any semiauto rifle with a 20-rd mag could be used in a mass shooting.

An AR15 with a 5 rd mag is less lethal than a browning hunting semiauto that has no features of an assault rifle

There's a difference between protecting animals from torture and protecting people who think they need unrestricted access to assault rifles with high capacity magazines just so they can hunt deer.

Actually, they are attempting to change the narrative to cops in schools however they are doing it in a manner that makes them, and their proposals, seem crazy. The NRA has done a disservice to it's members and all gun owners with his craziness. He could have said "We don't believe new guns laws would solve this issue, however we will work with all parties to find a solution." What gun owners got was, "OMG! 90's movies and rap music!"

Poor Wayne he has a nasty case of NRA Tourettes. No matter what the conversation he twitches and responds with "more guns, no gun control."

There is still a distinction. 100% of what the WBC does is horrible and objectionable. That percentage is smaller (although the degree of difference could be debated) for PETA.

I'm just saying that people need to be careful about comparing things to the WBC, since they really are awful on an entirely different level.

Well, sure when we dragged our knuckles and dragged our mates back o the cave.

We've moved beyond that and have a sense of the common good. You give a little, you get a little. And while there may be disagreements on philosophies of how things function you still work with each other and try to hammer something out.

The grand irony of Politics in the current phase were in is that there were groups that came in it with a "Must Win At All Costs" mindset and managed to lose, badly, repeatedly. That should be the tragic lesson taken from it.

Look at our history. When have we had easing up on partisanship? When we have a foreign enemy. Before 9/11, remember the politics behind the Bush budget and how it was being held up? Next day Congress gave Bush a blank check.

We NEED competition. Without a foreign enemy we turn on ourselves and go all out to defeat each other.

Actually, chimp politics within a troupe are pretty fluid. Over all chimps are tribal, yes, partisan, no. If you want partisanship in primates, look at baboons. Different baboon matriarchies pretty much have holy wars with each other.

No one hides behind rights. They only exercise them. Rights are not granted by the government but by nature themselves. No one can claim that people hide behind nature.

Where partisanships is defined as non-familial loyalty to an internal grouping within a troupe/band.

Actually, you sort of have a point. But what man NEEDS isn't a foreign enemy but rather a challenge. At points in our history that need for a challenge has been met by simple survival or exploration of our world and solar system. Without such a challenge we all to often fall back on creating a challenge through exaggerating what we see as political or international threats.

Oh I fully recognize that PETA is full of shiat and that they say really obnoxious things. The difference is that saying things like your example is not the ONLY thing they do. Whereas the WBC only ever says and does terrible things.

It's a difference of degree I suppose.

cman: In the game of football you dont give an inch to the other team

EPIC FAIL.

Sometimes, in a close game, you allow the other team to score to give you enough time to respond with your own score.

Other times, you may intentionally take a safety (two points and a free kick being a better option than a touchdown from a blocked punt in your own endzone) so you can give yourself some breathing room late in a game.

In this case, the NRA is up by one point and decided that they need to run the option on their own goal line.
