Ain't me, man. Somebody must have hit a skunk.

It also states Engle told Mike Radzik, the township's community standards director, that he was not in violation of the township's local zoning laws because they were "unconstitutional."

That's some militia member-level constitutional scholarship for you. Next tell them you're a sovereign citizen and aren't required to pay taxes.

This is why you put carbon scrubbers on your exhaust vents, dumbass.  A successful grow operation in a residential area is an undetected operation.

For starters, you don't want to piss off your neighbors since they can report you to the city.  It is no different than not being that inconsiderate jerk with too many chickens in his backyard stinking up the neighborhood.

The other big reason is because you don't want a smash and grab robbery.  All you need is for the wrong person to walk by and notice the odor, or for somebody to notice it and then through word-of-mouth make its way to the wrong person.  Not only is your crop gone, but your house is probably smashed.  And woe to the person living in the house if they're robbed by a messed up meth tweaker with a gun.

If the smell is only prevalent at certain times, is it a grow op in their basement or are they cooking up hash?

Yup. Although they could also be growing a particularly smelly strain.

2 years before I moved into this house the pigs pulled something like 10 yard bags worth of pot out of the house. You knew something was up 3 blocks away just by the smell. Hundreds of pounds of Mexican ditch weed stinks

Hey now, everything he learned about drugs was from Breaking Bad. You have to cook things and weed is just like meth :p

Well I know there isn't actually any cooking in the process, unless you count boiling water as cooking. The other explanations would be only opening the vents when they think it wouldn't be noticed(they failed.)

How do you cook up hash? I've seen some YT vids and you either use bubble bags, beat the weed over screens, or you use your hands so the resin sticks to it and you scrape it off..

FTFA: Township Attorney  Dennis McLain said the smell is so extreme that one neighbor has been physically sickened, it has disturbed neighbors' sleep and prevented them from opening their windows on warm days over the summer.

Dear neighbors,

Screw the zoning regulations. You can get this guy for private nuisance, if the smell is so bad that you cannot reasonably enjoy your own property. Start hauling his ass to court and he'll get the message.

Gosh, I don't know. You seem to be quite knowledgeable.
I think it involves hydrogen peroxide at 99% purity along with benzene at high heat.
I may be wrong about that though.

Pot is still a polarizing subject amongst many people. "Reasonably" can run a pretty huge gamut in this instance.

As I recall from too far back in the day, marijuana has a rather pleasant odor.

Since I live in Colorado, I'll check my memory and report back.

Several years ago I went to a friend's house and smelled a particular odor, like skunk musk.

My buddy smiled and said, "You wanna see something really cool?"

"Sure!" I said.

He took me to the basement, unlocked a door, and showed me his grow room.

He later made $5000 from one person from just 20 square feet of basement space.

What if you have some whiny limp wristed neighbor who can't stand the smell of your barbecue/smoker? Does that qualify as a '"public nuisance"?

I think I heard about a case like that some years back. Maybe it was over the  CO2 emissions of the barbecue grill, though. I honestly can't recall enough about it to google it up. I do know in some cities in California you can be cited for smoking cigarettes, even in your own apartment, if anyone else can smell it. I think it was Belmont, Cali that outright made it illegal to smoke in your own apartment or condo, whether others could smell it or not. Don't know if it stood, as I'm sure someone challenged it.

/Cali - we do things differently here

I realized something about the smell when I stayed a day in Amsterdam last month. I had unconsciously been trained to associate the smell as risky and dangerous because it was illegal. Even in that place and I did not have any, it still gave me a sense of unease like I was getting in trouble.

This is pretty high class for Ypsitucky. I'd expect the grow house to be in neighboring Ann Arbor and a meth lab in Ypsi.

Around these parts, the cops would be creaming their pants over an opportunity to bust a grow house.
Easy, low-hanging fruit for them, and an opportunity for the local police chief to brag on the nightly news of the supposed street value they stopped.

Problem solved for under 10 bucks.

If they haven't experienced a robbery yet, I'm betting that the people who own the place are paranoid that one will be coming soon.  I'm curious if they're going to hire a guard, move shop or actually stay put.

This is how the story was displayed on my screen:

Ypsilanti Township has filed a lawsuit against a man and a woman accused of pumping a strong marijuana odor from their home.

According to a verified petition filed in Washtenaw County Circuit Court, the odor is so "overwhelming" that it has regularly disrupted next door neighbors' life over the last year.

[ University Students, Faculty and Staff Receive 5% off purchases of $25 or more. ]

Police and township officials say they have smelled the odor outside the home at 1397 Crestwood Ave. on multiple occasions. That constitutes a violation of a zoning ordinance that states that the "creation of offensive odors shall be prohibited" in any zone, attorneys contend.
