"According to the researchers' estimates, the net effect is that Oahu will continue to grow for as long as 1.5 million years. Beyond that, the force of groundwater will eventually triumph and the island will begin its descent to a low-lying topography."

Visit Oahu. While you still can.

SpikeStrip: farkin' tectonics, how do they work?

This. If you look on a map, you'll find a whole chain of islands to the northwest of Oahu that get lower in elevation until you reach Kure Atoll at the top of the chain. Beyond that, there are underwater seamounts that used to be islands. Someday, there will be an island south of the Big Island too.

You mean the chain of islands formed by a volcanic hot spot with extensive volcanic activity might actually by dissolving from tectonic forces within the island?

So how much time do they have left, one, two million years perhaps?

Not to mention that the seamounts take a major tack northward where the plate changed direction about 40 million years ago.

My sister is a surfer, and while we have good surf spots here in  Cali, she likes Hawaii. Even if I told her it would be a couple million years before the islands she knows and loves would disappear, it would give her a major sad. So I won't tell her nuthin'.

Shouldn't you be consulting the Urantia Book on this? I'm sure it will have something to say that will enlighten us all.

Cool, when all the inbred natives have to flee to the mainland we can be assholes to them because they weren't born here.

The same kinda thing is happening inside Mt. Rainier up here in Washington. The rain seeps into the mountain and gets heated up by volcanic forces, which broils the granite into clay. Some day, the sides will slide down and drown Tacoma. At the same time, the plug will wash out and start the eruptions again.

Oh dear. Only 1.5 million years?!? That's as many as.....150,000 40's! And that's terrible!

You need the rain to mix with the volcanic sulfur in the mountain to form sulfuric acid in order to really eat the rock.

It doesn't really matter. Someday the sun will swallow the Earth after becoming a red giant. Or the red giant sun will throw the Earth into deep space and become a giant snowball floating in space. So does anything really matter?

In like eleventy million years that will be a major problem
