"Oh boo-hoo! Its taking like a full minute for this update to download! Lame!"

This is precisely why people on my Xmas list will be getting a vintage c64 and a stack of 5 1/4 floppies for their gaming needs. THEN they'll know real pain...

Tell me about it! I'm am a staunch supporter of "Fresh out of the box" or NOT AT ALL!! That's why when I gave my daughter a new car for her birthday I made sure it was ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE. No gas, no oil... hell, I didn't even put the battery in it!!

This is a giant fail. Next thing you know other Christmas toys will ship with some assembly required. Then parents will be stuck staying up late the night before Christmas setting them up. The travesty.

YodaBlues: PsyLord: I still see units sitting on the shelf at the local Walmart today. I'm guessing the Wii U is not a must have Xmas present.

Was walking through a Best Buy today and they had both the multiples of the standard and deluxe versions on the shelf. People just aren't seeing a reason to grab one.

/Semi-interested in ZombieU, but I'll hold out until a price drop or more must-have games to be released.

Let me cut through the bullshiat:

Update your WiiU firmware to perma-cripple your ability to mod the system!

/My friend bought three in the first week they were out... he's waiting two years to stick them on eBay for a buy-it-now only price of $1,000.
//He did the same thing with a Wii and a PSP. Bastard's smart.

If only the folks at Nintendo who publish the updates worked for the same company as the folks at Nintendo that package the products and write the documentation. If that were the case, they could request that no major updates be published until after, say Jan 15. Then everyone could enjoy their gadget without complaint for a couple of weeks.

Slowest goddamn disk drive ever:

LOAD "*",8,1

*go get some lunch*

*come back and play game*

Oh and what's that you say? You want to enter a dungeon? Well flip that disk over to side-B sunny boy and take a 45 minute nap. Hope you didn't forget anything back in town!

this.

I remember the good old days when, if you wanted a toy firetruck for Christmas, it didn't need a single bit of prep. I'd open the box on Christmas morning and a brick of unformed plastic and some steel wire (to make my own screws) would fall out. Then mom would fire up the smelter so Uncle Roy could fashion some kind of asbestos molds to create the proper plastic parts.

I have seen reports of an hour (plus another half hour for a second update) on a 14mbps connection.

elchip: I've been told that the ps3 is generally the best console of the generation. The best exclusives and a large library. The price has come down a lot since 2006.

I actually don't even mind older used consoles because pretty much even stuff from like 5 years ago will likely blow mind mind. Hell... I still play the original CoD and enjoy it... although it is getting a little bring because I've beat it so many times at this point.

You should still be able to find one in stock. That pretty much tells you all you need to know.

Yes, which is that the majority of people buy video game consoles for the utter novelty and have no use for high-quality game hardware and software when some crappy game on the phone achieves the same goals for them.

Japanese electronics are dying. It's not just Nintendo and videogames. It's Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, and most of the rest.

There was a good segment about this on NPR a few days ago. Management is ageing and unwilling to take risks; the culture doesn't really embrace startups; they're very insular about technology.

Japanese electronics companies are getting their tails kicked by Korean, Taiwanese, even some American companies. And their government is not inclined to let these titans fail, so it well bailout and merge these failing companies until it becomes completely untenable.

What's the last must-have gadget that came out of Japan? The Wii, 7 years ago?

The ageing and decline of that country is very sad.

If the commercials are any indication, it's a piece of crap game system that can only play scrolling platformers.

It's an excellent console if you live with someone else. If they want to watch TV while you're playing, you can just continue the game on the controller's screen.
