The inclusion of both the Vita and PS3 games in this is what sold me on finally getting Playstation Plus. The inclusion of most of the best titles on the Vita side didn't hurt any, either. Now I just need more storage on both the Vita and PS3.

Not sure if serious, but the hardware is certainly more powerful than the X-Box 360 and PS3. Yes I'm aware that's not saying a whole lot since those are older consoles, but it appears Nintendo may have changed their outlook a bit. A lot of games that in previous years would normally be for just X-Box 360 and PS3 look like they are going to get a Wii U edition also. Having a system that plays all the great Nintendo exclusives you expect like Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, etc and also having games like Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed, Ninja Gaiden, and Tekken Tag Tournament is now a reality.

One of the perks of PlayStation Plus is free cloud storage. I also free up space on my HD by erasing games that I finished/Platinumed or don't play anymore. Make sure you erase both the saved game and the installed game data.

Or maybe Nintendo has a different idea of what to do with gaming, instead of worrying about how shiny the water is they worry about how people actually play games and the various ways games can be played. Given the mountains of cash they have and that the Wii, not sure about WiiU, console sold at a profit from day one, seems they're doing something right.

A different idea like releasing titles that are almost exactly the same as titles that were on the last console and the console before that?  The only thing they are doing right is marketing to kids, which is more dumb luck via their culture than an actual plan.  However they are trying to release the Wii U like it's something all gamers should pay attention to when in reality it is DOA, and has rehashed games and ports that look very similar to current consoles.  Nostalgia and name recognition are the only things keeping Nintendo in business.

And they are not making a profit yet.  They are making more than they are losing per unit, but they have a ways to go before recovering development costs.

It's probably somebody that used to use download for everything, but ran into you or me, and is now overcompensating.

However in this case, I suspect it was a flub of the word update.

The worst is once you get a newb past upload/download and try to introduce copy.

So I don't download songs to my ipod?
Well, maybe. Did it go from teh internet straight to your ipod?
No, it's from my collection.
Then no, you copied it to your ipod.
So I uploaded it then?

But I don't copy from apple to my ipod?

Yeah, I've been making use of that obsessively after losing about three hours of work on Persona 4: Golden when I set down the Vita on my desk and it managed to unseat the memory card enough that the Vita had to be rebooted and my save data for Persona got corrupted. MayoSlather: To be honest I have a massive amount of schadenfreude for the Wii U. They released a platform that is only a minuscule hardware upgrade to the Xbox and PS3 while rehashing very simplistic games that have been done so many times before. Then they try and avoid scrutiny by pretending they somehow aren't really competing with anyone but themselves. This is not what most people want for the future of gaming. If developers devote resources for games that run on the lowest common denominator and that is equivalent to 5 year old technology then this is not good for the industry. If Nintendo was the only major gaming platform the industry would be looking at another crash circa 1983. Although as it stands Nintendo very well could go the way of Sega and the Dreamcast; release early with comparatively underpowered hardware and face doom two years laters.

I have a massive amount of shadenwhatdafuq over consoles in general. Why everyone else is crying over how the Wii has awesome hardware specs for five years ago and biatching about having to update, I'm having a load of fun playing FTL on my crappy five year old PC and thinking that game might have been the best $7 I ever spent.

And like any REALLY good game, it would seriously suck to have to play it using a gamepad.

If I wanted a game controller with a built-in screen then I would play games on my iPhone.

Have you even touched a Wii U? No snark. You make it sound like they are doing the same mistakes they did with the Gamecube and Wii. Which is to market only family friendly, very PG content. The Wii U has Black Ops 2 at launch as well as one hell of a freaky zombie attack game, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect 3. In other words, they want a huge chunk of the adult gaming market, this go around, and with the innovation that having a second gaming screen (think, no more HUDs on your TV, or maps in the corner etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.) But we will see.

I am not a "fanboy", by any means. Just speaking from my experience with actually playing it

I've been told that the ps3 is generally the best console of the generation. The best exclusives and a large library. The price has come down a lot since 2006.

Having owned both an Xbox 360 and a PS3, I'm not sure really has an advantage over the other game-wise, but blu-ray is what tipped it for me and lead me to sell my 360 for a PS3.

The 360 has become a hit with the casual market and is attracting a lot of new consumers with the kinect, that's where it's late life sales are coming from.

Nintendo hadn't had a new game formula since Wii Sports, and that was their first original game formula since Metroid Prime.

Hard Harry: Mad_Radhu: PsyLord: I still see units sitting on the shelf at the local Walmart today. I'm guessing the Wii U is not a must have Xmas present.

Yeah, from what I read, the Xbox is close to outselling both Wiis combined for the holiday season, which us odd because you'd think the Xbox market would long be saturated, but it still keeps selling like crazy. Price-wise it isn't even that much less than the Wii U if you get the Kinect versions, so it's not like people are getting it to save a few bucks.

Yeah everyone I know has had bad luck with longevity and the X-Box. I don't understand what happened I still have an original Nintendo my brother and I got for Xmas in 1986 that still works fine, not to mention my SNES from the early 90's. I'm guessing it probably has to do with planned obsolescence and or the use of the cheapest components available.

The newer consoles have motors and lasers as well as a much larger power consumption along with the resultant heat. The old ones were had nothing fancier than printed circuit boards and integrated circuits.

The PS3 takes a standard 2.5" SATA hard drive, so you can easily give yourself more space for less than the price of a new game. I just bumped mine up to 500 GB thanks to all those PS Plus downloads that were filling up my old 250 GB drive. The backup/restore process is actually pretty simple, but you do need a second, external hard drive for the backup.

elchip: here to help: Well here's an opportunity to ask you guys something I've been wanting to know.

I've been contemplating getting a console but haven't bought/owned/known jack about them since the SNES days.

What's the best bang for the buck? I'm thinking the X-Box thingy sounds about right because I've been using my PCs for the very little gaming I do.

Essentially I like FPS type stuff (specifically the CoD series... and yeah that I know that makes me sound like a drunken fratboy but screw you... I like shooting Nazis to decompress) but am interested in other formats too if.

I'm also not particularly interested in online gaming. Just like playing the computer. Sooo... what say you oh ever wise and snarky Farkers?

I've been told that the ps3 is generally the best console of the generation. The best exclusives and a large library. The price has come down a lot since 2006.

I was a video game store manager for awhile and I am a pretty active gamer.

My advice would be the following:

1) A gaming PC is best. You can build one for around $500-600 and hook it up to your HD-TV. Get an Xbox 360 controller and you will be able to play anything on the market. The upfront costs are higher, but if you buy your games through Steam, Amazon Digital Downloads or similar services, you can save a bundle. You can also run any web app you want without having to wait on the console to have a version available.

2) If you are dead set on having a console and aren't looking for a specific console-exclusive game, the PS3 320GB is the best choice because it comes with everything you need right out of the box and has a free online service where you can get apps and games. The PS3 has the most horsepower and the highest reliability of the current consoles. It also has some awesome exclusives and indie titles, as well as some of the best versions of popular games. Its optional Move system, while not popular, works better than the Wii or Kinect for flailing around in front of your TV if that's your thing.

3) If you want to play Halo or have a lot of friends who play Call of Duty, you're probably best off with a 360. It's the most popular system and that's where most people go to play multiplayer. The games are relatively cheap if you hold out for sales or price drops (which seem to happen quickly with a lot of 360 titles), and even though the console is aging and underpowered compared to the PS3, it's still the standard for most multiplatform games.

I wouldn't waste your time or money on anything else. If you're really interested in the Wii (which is not HD and which only has a few worthwhile games), you can get the Wii accessories, hook them up to your PC and run the Dolphin emulator. You'll actually get HD upscaling and the experience is far preferable to Nintendo's padded playground.

The thing I really like about the PS3 as a Blu-ray player is that they keep it nicely updated, so I can even use it for 3D movies, which you don't find on normal 2006 era Blu-ray player.

Either the Xbox 360 or PS3 should suit you. I would recommend looking at the games available on both and seeing if one library looks more appealing than the other to you personally. Do bear in mind that on both of them there is an increasing emphasis on online multiplayer which sometimes results in lacklustre single-player. It's best to read a few game reviews.

It's also best to avoid the many fanboys as they will bang on endlessly about hardware differences and other pointless trivia. It's a game console, it's something you do for fun, and all that matters is that it's a means to play the games you want to play.

Myself, I've always gone with the approach that if I see a game or a few games that to me justify the cost of buying the console, I buy it.

Got a Wii-U for my wife (who is in her 50s). I think we may be part of the target market. We are not hardcore gamers at all, but do enjoy some light gaming entertainment. FPS - no way. WoW no. COD no. Halo no.

She likes Zelda, I like Mario stuff. I want to drive a race car.

The Wii-U has been sold out within a day as soon as it hits the shelves of stores around here. My son works the gaming department of a large Canadian electronics retailer, and they can't keep Wii-U stuff in stock.

Since my son already has an Xbox and a PS3, it only seemed right we got our own console to add to the completed big home theatre setup we got (on the cheap, employee discount).

/Note to self - do the updates tomorrow night so we can play on Christmas Day.

PC games and most consoles are for solitary (or online gamers). The Wii is better for groups of people or co-operative playing.

I look forward to all those innovative lauch titles for the next Xbox/PS3, like the next Madden, Halo, and Call of Duty.

Nintendo hadn't had a new game formula since Wii Sports, and that was their first original game formula since Metroid Prime.

Third party developers have released Gears of War, Resistance, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Red Dead, Far Cry, Borderlands, Uncharted, Bioshock, Arkham Asylum/City, Dead Space, Hitman, God of War... And how many of those were by Japanese developers?

Metroid Prime was released in 2002. Since then Nintendo has released the following New IP's/Formula's:
Brain Age
Nintendogs
Big Brain Academy
Battalion Wars
Mario Strikers
Mario Superstar Baseball
Donkey Konga
Electroplankton
Clubhouse Games
Mario Hoops 3-On-3
Chibi-Robo

Wii Sports Launched in 2006. Since then Nintendo has released the following new IP's/Formulas?
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Fossil Fighters
Style Savvy
Art Academy
Sing Party
Fluidity
Snowpack Park
Pokepark
Fling Smash

Other than those games, Nintendo has done nothing but recycle the same content over and over again. Unlike those Western developers who give us new shiat every year. And it's totally fair to compare one developer to 13 developers. Now excuse me, I have to choose between playing Call of Duty 9, Medal of Honor 16, Just Dance 4, Assassin's Creed 5 etc. etc.

I have heard of precisely three of those IPs. Battalion Wars, Brain Age, and Nintendogs.

Granted, that doesn't make me right.

Okay, so Nintendo does continue to innovate. But how many of those franchises are really successful, besides the three I mentioned?

They sure as heck don't have the level of success or ubiquity as the franchises I mentioned.

Which goes back to my original point. Japanese electronics developers are floundering. Samsung's profits are twice that of the top nine Japanese electronics companies' combined.

NEC, Nintendo, Sony, and Sharp are all in the red. Canon, Fujitsu, and Pioneer have very thin margins. Most others have decreasing profits.

Japan has a huge demographic crisis on the horizon. The median age is almost 45, the death rate is higher than the birth rate, and a lot of the stuff they make is big only in Japan.

It's really quite horrible.

The most use my Wii had was using the Virtual Console.

Why does everyone think you HAVE to update it? I bought mine on release day and never updated it and it works perfectly.
