Eh the Wii was fun for a hot minute.  Only game that was memorable was 4p Mario with the neighbors.  Probably never buying another Nintendo system again.

/SFC was the best system ever though.

Meh, never give a gift that isn't ready out of the box. Hell, even an Ipad needs to suck on the corporate teat before being 100% the first time it's turned on.

I still see units sitting on the shelf at the local Walmart today. I'm guessing the Wii U is not a must have Xmas present.

Yeah, I think I'll wait a few months before I buy that toy.

Does anyone have anything positive to say about the Wii U for someone on the fence?

Was walking through a Best Buy today and they had both the multiples of the standard and deluxe versions on the shelf. People just aren't seeing a reason to grab one.

/Semi-interested in ZombieU, but I'll hold out until a price drop or more must-have games to be released.

There will eventually be a new Zelda game on it....sigh. I know, I know, I played Skyward Sword too.

It's an excellent console if you live with someone else. If they want to watch TV while you're playing, you can just continue the game on the controller's screen.

"Oh boo-hoo! Its taking like a full minute for this update to download! Lame!"

This is precisely why people on my Xmas list will be getting a vintage c64 and a stack of 5 1/4 floppies for their gaming needs. THEN they'll know real pain...

Yeah, from what I read, the Xbox is close to outselling both Wiis combined for the holiday season, which us odd because you'd think the Xbox market would long be saturated, but it still keeps selling like crazy. Price-wise it isn't even that much less than the Wii U if you get the Kinect versions, so it's not like people are getting it to save a few bucks.

In the computer industry, we upload data to servers and download updates to personal systems. Subby has it backwards, and stating it backwards is now increasingly common in journalism. Anyone know why?

2012-12-23 06:04:44 PM
Actually in the month we've had ours my kids won't allow me to play the old Wii anymore, all they want is Nintendo Land on the WiiU every night (I play while wife cooks dinner). To be honest I've found myself liking the whole separate screen on the controller a lot more than I expected. Means I can play two player easier with my 5 year old, and also walk away to do stuff while we play games together.

The update thing sucks though. I posted this on my FB earlier today saying I bet 5 bucks the servers are gonna tank on xmas day. It wasn't "rage quit" levels when I set it up but it was waaaaaaay to long for what was supposed to be a finished product.

Mario U is the best 2d mario nintendo has made since going 3d

Zombi U justifies the 2nd screen, is satisfying to beat, justifies a sequel

has the best version of netflix on a console

miiverse is actually cool

downloads games while you play

My kid thinks Superscribblenauts and SMB U are frickin awesome, and is very much looking forward to Pikmin 3. All consoles launch with a few good games and a bunch of weak ass ones, just how it goes. No reason not to wait a few months and get one when there are more and better games.

2012-12-23 06:06:35 PM
It's worth noting that this does apply to other systems as well. If you buy a new system, it was probably put in a box prior to the most recent updates.

Granted, the Wii U is missing tons of functionality without the first update, but still...

Well here's an opportunity to ask you guys something I've been wanting to know.

I've been contemplating getting a console but haven't bought/owned/known jack about them since the SNES days.

What's the best bang for the buck? I'm thinking the X-Box thingy sounds about right because I've been using my PCs for the very little gaming I do.

Essentially I like FPS type stuff (specifically the CoD series... and yeah that I know that makes me sound like a drunken fratboy but screw you... I like shooting Nazis to decompress) but am interested in other formats too if.

I'm also not particularly interested in online gaming. Just like playing the computer. Sooo... what say you oh ever wise and snarky Farkers?

Japanese electronics are dying. It's not just Nintendo and videogames. It's Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, and most of the rest.

There was a good segment about this on NPR a few days ago. Management is ageing and unwilling to take risks; the culture doesn't really embrace startups; they're very insular about technology.

Japanese electronics companies are getting their tails kicked by Korean, Taiwanese, even some American companies. And their government is not inclined to let these titans fail, so it well bailout and merge these failing companies until it becomes completely untenable.

What's the last must-have gadget that came out of Japan? The Wii, 7 years ago?

The ageing and decline of that country is very sad.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's people replacing dead consoles and just moving the hdd over to the new one. I could be wrong of course, but both my ps3 and 360 died after 3-4 years of life, while my Wii has kept right on going.

I've been told that the ps3 is generally the best console of the generation. The best exclusives and a large library. The price has come down a lot since 2006.

Yes, which is that the majority of people buy video game consoles for the utter novelty and have no use for high-quality game hardware and software when some crappy game on the phone achieves the same goals for them.

I actually don't even mind older used consoles because pretty much even stuff from like 5 years ago will likely blow mind mind. Hell... I still play the original CoD and enjoy it... although it is getting a little bring because I've beat it so many times at this point.

this.

I remember the good old days when, if you wanted a toy firetruck for Christmas, it didn't need a single bit of prep. I'd open the box on Christmas morning and a brick of unformed plastic and some steel wire (to make my own screws) would fall out. Then mom would fire up the smelter so Uncle Roy could fashion some kind of asbestos molds to create the proper plastic parts.

I bought the Wii U a couple weeks ago, and it is a video game experience like you've never had before. For example, you can flick your fingers across the screen like your dealing cards, and be throwing ninja stars. You can click your accessories on the screen of your controller instead of having to cycle through your gear. 4 other people can have a wii mote and you can have the tablet, where you can see where everyone is at, while they look at the tv, and it's ultimate hide and seek. I don't know, I think it opens up tons of avenues for functionality, rather than being a fad. And it is decently priced.

8/10

Very fun

If only the folks at Nintendo who publish the updates worked for the same company as the folks at Nintendo that package the products and write the documentation. If that were the case, they could request that no major updates be published until after, say Jan 15. Then everyone could enjoy their gadget without complaint for a couple of weeks.

Hey, in the not too distant past there were consoles launching with less than 10 games of even less than 5 games. The N64 only launched with Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. Both were great games for their time but I'm fairly certain the limited of launch titles hurt the system. In a sense the Saturn launch was even worse with only 6 games but it was months before any more showed up because SEGA decided to bump up the launch date as a surprise and developers weren't ready to release anything they were working on.

Even if some of the games are updated ports at least some of the time we are getting some kind of an actual selection at launch these days.

Mad_Radhu: PsyLord: I still see units sitting on the shelf at the local Walmart today. I'm guessing the Wii U is not a must have Xmas present.

Obviously it isn't going to account for all the sales but I do wonder how many of the 360s being sold are people taking advantage of various sales to either replace a broken earlier model 360 or to replace something like the arcade model because they want one with a hard drive. I know a lot of that went on with the PS2 for awhile when certain models had trouble with a plastic gear for the drive breaking. Also, it isn't exactly unheard of for an existing system to outsell a newer system when it launches near the holidays. You have the combination of a much wider selection of games available, cheaper prices on many of the games, different holiday bundles and sales, and usually a hard cap on supplies of the new system while an existing system may have built up a stockpile of units for sale during the holidays.

My Atari 2600 didn't need to be updated before I could use it. Not one single firmware update in all the years I used it. No load times, either. Just flip the power and it was ready to rock.

Arumat: If I had to guess, I'd say it's people replacing dead consoles and just moving the hdd over to the new one. I could be wrong of course, but both my ps3 and 360 died after 3-4 years of life, while my Wii has kept right on going.

That seems like a reasonable assumption. If someone already has a PS3 or XB360 that's acting up, the U doesn't really provide any incentive for abandoning their existing library of games and accessories.
