I'm constantly amazed at how people think they world should stop until they are ready to resume "normal" life after a calamity event. As a debt collector my clients definitely make special considerations for those impacted, but dont sit here expecting you can jsut resume paying your bills whenever you feel like it.

The "entitlement" behavior of America is alarming.

diaphoresis: Mayor Bloomberg can't be supporting this. NYC residents pay more taxes than God. Where is the support for these victims?

Do you think that paternalistic, authoritarian asswipe cares about anyone who isn't a plutocrat like him?

They didn't suddenly decide to give out notices, the people who got them 4 days after the hurricane were probably MONTH'S behind on their rent already. Great article for making it seem like the owners are at fault rather than the people who figured they didn't need to pay at all.

That being said, if a dwelling is uninhabitable, you may not charge rent for it.

If the dwelling is habitable and you have a lease, rent is due.

It's not rocket surgery.

jigger: Ah, just like Katrina. Using a storm to clear out the rabble.

It seems pretty clear to me that they'd be clearing out the rabble even if there was no storm. You don't hire a process server to put out eviction notices mere days after the rent is late (this was 4 days after Sandy). You've got to be late for a couple weeks in my experience. If my tenant was 4 days late with their rent, they'd get an email, not an eviction notice.

Greedy farks.

Might want to reassess the direction of your outrage. This is public housing. It's the city government that is evicting these people.

Seems like they're going after people who were late before the storm.

Could have been solved by condemning the semi-habitable buildings until they were properly repaired. I know somebody who knows the guy responsible for major condemnations in NYC. If he shows up at your apartment building, big trouble.

Of course condemning the buildings brings its own set of problems, but the rent should stop coming due.
