Based on the article, this is a Disney movie coming out, not a Pixar movie.

Another Pixar vehicle to market.....Pixar vehicles.

Simpsons predicted it.  Granted, they predicted Cards, but still.

Actually, I was kind of hoping for a theater release when I saw the "direct-to-dvd" trailer on the Cars2 DVD. So, I'm happy. It looked like it could be fun.

The URL loaded before the pics and text, so at first I thought Disney was unrolling a fleet of real planes. Brilliant- keep the kids on a separate carrier.

Having a son obsessed with airplanes, either my husband or I will certainly get dragged to this film.

And this is Pixar... how?

It even says in the article "It won't have the Pixar polish", meaning it's just your garden variety assembly line, crapped out Disney straight to video cash in.

Cars 2 is a certificate U in the UK, meaning it's meant for kids. My sons love it, and I actually like it. One thing that was patently obvious from the outset was the obvious toy-selling angle. When Mater's trying out disguises, he's a vampire and an ice cream truck for less than a second of screen time, but bet your arse you can buy those mass-produced toys for £7 a pop

Well, yeah.  Pixar wouldn't have made it.  But this is Disney's dime and they can do with Pixar whatever they want.

Parents are buying less DVDs for their kids - it's easier to download and play it on the media center. So to monetize this stuff, you go the George Lucas route and spam the stores with toys.

You DO realize that the very second sentence in that link says that Pixar has nothing to do with it, right?

Lasseter IS involved, however, so it might well be watchable, even if it is direct to DVD.

That's why I said, "Pixar wouldn't have made it.  But this is Disney's dime and they can do with Pixar whatever they want."

As in, Disney is fully allowed to use the holdings, characters and universes of the Pixar they bought for whatever movie they want to come out with.  But Lasseter has overseen all of Pixar's movies and associated works, so effectively that makes this...Pixar.  With Disney making the bad decisions.

DNRTFA Assume it's "Planes." Which we new about two years ago in "Mater's Tall Tales." Not PIXAR STFU, Disney makes cartoons. Get over it.

Lasseter is in charge of all Disney Toons Productions/per article.
Even that silly Ewok Christmas special next year.

I agree with you except for Lasseter = Pixar. Sure, the studio wouldn't be where they were without him, but he's done other non-Pixar things. IIRC, he was involved in the Wreck-It Ralph movie (checked, he was- exec producer).

Honestly, even though this is Disney further using a property that has become a bald cash grab, it isn't Pixar themselves, and I'd even expect it to be watchable with Lasseter involved. I've seen the preview and it does look amusing.

Gotta be better than Two and a Half Men.

If it has the Sea Duck as a character it might be okay.

As far as Cars. A lot of strange hatred for Cars. It's a nice slice of Americana. Guess people don't like that here on Fark.

"DisneyToon is also working on a sequel, called Planes 2: Fire and Rescue."

Uh huh.

"Besides the Planes trilogy..."

Oh, okay...

"DisneyToon is considering to make more spin-offs that would feature other vehicles like boats and trains, and which may go into production if the Planes series is well received.[14] John Lasseter said: "I kept thinking about-I'm a big train fanatic. I love trains. And I started thinking about trains, and boats and airplanes. And I kept wanting to have more and more of those type of characters. [...] It's one of the ideas, that there will be an ongoing series."

Okay, stop it. Just... stop.

Cars 1 was a good enough movie. Not as good as other Pixar, but still better that most anything else. The plot was rehashed Doc Hollywood, but so what? I think the fact that it came out as the first "Disney" Pixar movie hurt it in the eyes of many. Also, Larry the Cable Guy.

Now, Cars 2? There's an awful movie. It existed solely to sell more toys to four-year-olds like mine. Joe's on them though, he doesn't like the "new" characters.

He's the "Chief Creative Officer" at Disney animation these days.  So basically anything animated Disney turns out, whether from their own studio or from Pixar, will have John as Executive Producer.

What do you mean by this? From Wikipedia:

Cars is a 2006 American computer-animated comedy-adventure film produced by Pixar and directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Joe Ranft. It is the seventh Disney·Pixar feature film, and Pixar's final, independently-produced motion picture before its purchase by Disney.

Wouldn't that make Ratatouille the first "Disney" Pixar movie?

CSB:

My friend works for Pixar. She has two kids. The first was a "production baby" for the original Cars and has her daughter's name in the credits as many studios do for kids born during production. Her seconds daughter was born during Cars 2.

The joke is that they're a two Cars family.

This is a Disney film, from Toon Disney Studios. While Pixar might have lent some production help, this is NOT a Pixar film.
