meh, he'll be making BC Rich guitars in a year.

This makes no sense on so many levels. Hopefully Trader Jack has something else up his sleeve.

The Ibanez Gem, with the built in handle, is a bad guitar, and Ibanez should feel bad for making it.

Justin Smoak to Yankees for magic beans. Smoak's line next year .290/35/110

And Chone Figgins comeback player of the year in Detroit or some shiat. We've seen this movie before, haven't we?

Nah Figgins just can't hit. Safeco was built for guys like Figgins and it kills guys like Smoak.

Fences coming in changes things somewhat. I liked the Morales deal (alot, actually) but Jason Bay and Raul Ibanez?

They aren't coming in that much and only center and left. The Bay deal was a reclamation project, however having seen a good number of his atbats this year I don't think Bay has anything left. When some guy fall they fall hard. The Ibanez deal strikes me more as a PR move than anything.

Well, Bay is from here (BC, lives in Kirkland) and cost literally nothing, so no harm no foul there.

But Ibanez seriously makes no sense.

I owned only Ibanez guitars for about 20 years. Then I found out that Washburn makes a much better guitar. I sold all but my RG550 (for rare whammy work).

Because he hit so well the last time he was a Mariner.  The only times he hit well at Safeco was when he was wearing another team's uniform.

Honestly, what is it about Safeco?  Bringing in the outfield walls won't make the team better.  I miss the days of Edgar and the dude was right-handed FFS.

No kidding, man. This team has more backup outfielders than it can possibly keep. Wells, Carp, Thames, now Bay and Ibanez, WTF? And of the bunch, only Wells offers any defensive value.

Well that's clearly wrong. In 2008, his last year as a Mariner, he had an .850 OPS at home, .824 away. In 2006 his OPS was .924 at home. The team would have loved to have a hitter like vintage Ibanez in 2012. Safeco has been fine for left-handers.

Glad to read this. It makes it much easier to hate the Yankees without Ibanez on the team.

That's pretty much the only Ibanez you'll ever need.

I'd read this book before. Lets bring back an aging star (Griffey) that we let slip away, so that we can sell what little tickets we manage to dump off, to hide the fact that even though ownership said we can spend money, they just let Cleveland sign Swisher for 56 million over 4 years. Couldn't offer 60? 65? Hey wait, lets bring back a 50 yr old former Mariner!

So farking done with this team.

Do you honestly think Swisher is worth that much?
Cleveland's initial offer was 50/4, that Swisher turned down then started talking to the Rangers.

I'll put it another way: do you think Swisher's addition, regardless of cost, is enough to elevate the Tribe into a discussion of even 2nd in the AL Central?
Would signing Swisher have elevated the Mariners into a discussion for 3rd in the West?

Considering initially teams thought he'd ask for 100 mil over 4 years, yes...he's probably worth 60 if he complimented what we got in the off....wait...we only got Kendrys Morales...

fark me.

No shiat...every guitar or bass I have is an Ibanez (except my classical guitar) - partly because of Satch first, Vai later.

But they really are fantastic guitars.

If a win is worth $5m or so and Swisher is worth a consistent 4 WAR per year, the deal looks like a bargain. I know, he doesn't produce in the postseason, but since there's no such thing as a magical postseason ability, and most non-Yankee teams would love just to get to there and then worry about whether their players can produce or not, it's a pretty solid deal.

And the question of "would this player elevate a team to a particular place in the standings" is kind of pointless. No, a 4 WAR player is not, by himself, going to elevate a team that needs 10 or 15 more wins. But you have to start somewhere. Adding wins is how you do it.

Decent power numbers, but not the kind that should bring that kind of deal. 85 or so RBI a season, and he doesn't bring much else to the table.

Ibanez returning to the West Coast means that he might reunite with his bandmates from Rage Against the Machine now

Ah, the M's. A fine blend of no-talent scrubs who can't stay in AAA because there's no room on the Tacoma roster for them, and a few has-beens desperately clinging to a dream

IMO, that's no worse than the Cubbies signing Edward Jackson(70-71 lifetime) to a 4/$52MM deal. You only need to be a mediocre player in MLB these days to get a pretty decent paycheck.

You do realize idiots with half a brain follow sports? I once asked this in a forum for baseball fans whats better a record of 50-100 with 1.03 ERA or 100-50 with 4.50 ERA, the poll finished with 100-50 winning, and by a very LARGE margin.

I've got this quoted in my profile, but (former) Twins GM Bill Smith once said

"Who do you want, a guy who's 10-15 with a 2.80 ERA or a guy who's 16-8 with a 7.00 ERA? I'll take the 16-8."

He should of probably looked at Bert Blylevens record, then he'd shut his yap.
