2012-12-22 06:38:11 PM
I feel old. I think I might have heard of Testament. That's it.

Back in the 80s, when I was a teenage headbanger at war with my NPR-announcer father, had you told me that in thirty years, I'd be reading NPR's Top Ten Metal albums (and that it wasn't a sad farce), I'd have spat satanic acid in your face....

Not a bad list. Missing a number of things that I really liked this year (DSO, Secrets of the Moon, Shining, Woods of Ypres etc. ) and a couple of things I'm just not into (not huge into power metal and grindcore and I haven't heard a good Testament album in nearly 20 years). Still, not bad for a "non-metal" publication.

2012-12-22 08:30:20 PM
Don't recog any of these names besides Testament, would anyone care to enlighten me if an old Iron Maiden metalhead would enjoy any of these works?

2012-12-22 08:31:52 PM
Any non-cookie monster vocalists in the list?

2012-12-22 08:41:55 PM
thats funny i haven't heard of a single one of those bands. i guess it was a slow year

2012-12-22 08:47:29 PM
list fails without:

Between the Buried and Me - Parralax II
Enslaved - RIITIIR
Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity

2012-12-22 08:48:21 PM
list is total fail without Corrosion of Conformity

Bhags: Any non-cookie monster vocalists in the list?

I don't think those exist in metal outside maybe Soilwork

2012-12-22 08:52:32 PM
Dead Kennedies. they are classic.

Bhags: Any non-cookie monster vocalists in the list?

Given most of the descriptions had black, doom, or grindcore in them I'm guessing very few. Going to put up To-Mera's Exile and Epica's Requiem for the Indifferent (Yeah I know they've got the growly stuff too, but at least I can usually understand the guy) as mine, but the way some Fark metal threads go prog and symphonic don't count around here.

Christian Mistress, Baroness and Om all put out excellent albums this year with clean vocals.

2/10 decent albums is 2 more than I expected.

meh.

Plenty of them, just not in the black/death/thrash categories. Metalcore, symphonic, Celtic/Viking, power, etc all have lots of good vocalists.

2012-12-22 09:37:33 PM

Snapper Carr: Om [...] put out excellent albums this year with clean vocals.

eh, the new Om didn't do anything for me. i guess they had to change up their formula eventually, but it was generally just boring. The move from massive-sounding minimalism to, well, maximalism just sounds kind of goofy and pretentious.

Would have been nice to see the new Epica album.

2012-12-22 09:48:31 PM
Sigh's "In Somniphobia" was the most wonderful slice of insanity I heard all year.

My ranking of their 4 albums:

1. Age of Winters
2. Warp Riders
3. Apocryphon
4. Gods of the Earth

You won't be disappointed with any. Damn near perfection.

Top releases for me:
Panopticon - Kentucky
Woods of Ypres- Grey Skies and Electric Lights
Wintersun - TimeTime
Agalloch-Faustian Echoes

Honorable mention-anything I worked on

One of the better lists to come from big publications, though Deathhammer was largely forgettable and Pig Destroyer has always sucked. Panopticon and Pharaoh are amazing.

Bear Farker: list fails without:

Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity

The overwhelming majority of cookie monsters are faking it. That is, if they were standing in line at the bank and started "singing," most people wouldn't hear them. That said, in my 20+ years of working live, I have never seen anyone do it for real like Travis. It was almost horrifying to see how much he was putting into it - at the end of some longer phrases, he was nearly retching from the exertion. Not really a fan, but I have to respect the guy's dedication.

the opposite of charity is justice: Don't recog any of these names besides Testament, would anyone care to enlighten me if an old Iron Maiden metalhead would enjoy any of these works?

You'd probably like "Bury the Light" by Pharoah, as it has a similar sound. Clean vocals and pretty good musical composition. Not the kind of thing I usually listen to, but it's not bad at all.

I checked out Woods of Ypres the other day due to someone mentioning them on Fark and was very, very pleased with what I was hearing.

List fails without "Pandora's Pinata" by Diablo Swing Orchestra.

No Converge?

Their best album in years.

I have seriously lost touch with music.  This is embarrassing for being mid-20s.

2013 will be Trixter's comeback year.

Much as I love NPR, I have yet to see/hear anything (non-classical) music-related that I've even remotely agreed with, at least list-wise.

If you don't count Rush as metal, this was my favorite metal album of the year:

exclaim.ca

Miles better than any of his Dethklok stuff. Dethklok's still fun, but this was just badass.
