If your IQ is 60 you probably aren't watching TV interviews with Mensa representatives, and even if you are you wouldn't recognize that as an insult.

Mensa [men-suh] noun:

1. An organization who's participants are retarded enough to pay dues to someone that tells them they are a genius for doing it.

so, at 60, you're almost 3 standard deviations below the mean, in the bottom 1% of people.

See, that's the thing. The two are not really connected. Many very smart people have a near complete lack of social skills.

I also know several people with nosebleed IQs who are completely lacking in common sense.

That was kind of my point, as well. This guy shouldn't have been representing Mensa to the public, because he's apparently lacking in social skills.

As an aside, I'm also one of those people - I'm bright, but socially inept. It's fun explaining that to folks who keep trying to "promote" me into management positions. ("Damn it, Jim, I'm a software engineer, not a middle manager!") I'd much rather stare at code than coddle and cajole other folks staring at code.

Yup. Agreed. I scored really well on some tests back in school and i'm sure i woulda qualified for Mensa, but I do these things that belie that IQ is not an indicator of smarts:

a) If I'm not actively engaged in remembering where I parked, it'll be a complete blank for me coming out of a mall. If I say to myself "3rd row from the door, west side, 18th spot" and just look for a second, no problem, done. But I get so absorbed in my own thoughts (or go completely blank, which is something i do SO often, like a walking meditation!).

b) I'm an accountant, I know numbers and I can work out strategies for financing, etc, but in my own personal life, I waste money and have a big debt, because despite my 'smarts', I'm an instant-gratification personality-type.

IQ is not the be-all of intelligence indicators. It's more of a test of pattern recognition skills.

IQ tests are not really a measure of anything important. Of course some one who had mental disabilities will do badly on any written test. But the reverse is not true.

Written test are used because they are cheap, easy and relatively few people do well on them. The fact that they suck at determining anything meaningful is over shadowed by these facts.

Yet IQ tests have a pretty good predictive value when assessing various areas of professional life.

And sure, it is not the be all end all of intelligence but people who score low are very likely to be less intelligent than people who score high.

You know, it's amazing how many of the .1% (IQs over 145) are here on Fark. By the sounds of the threads, every single one of those people has a Fark account, and an IQ of 145 is on the low end.

And they're always eager to point it out in a self-deprecating manner.

Do they really think they're getting away with complimenting themselves when they do that? "I have a 165 IQ but I'm like soooooo dumb, lol! My 165 IQ doesn't mean anything, did I mention that I have a 165 IQ, and how meaningless it is?"

Self-selecting bias. Fark is not a random sample. We are people interested in the world around us and exchanging ideas (or trolling one another). These are not typical traits in the population at large. Most people I have known are ignorant and revel in it. I've literally known hundreds of people who are like that. The few people I have known who are smart belong to communities like Fark.

And yes, even those idiots here who hold stupid opinions I happen to disagree with are smarter than the average carrot. You will find no carrots among us. We are topheavy with smart people.

And if I'm any indication, bottomheavy with smart people too :(

This guy is just a dick. Hi dude, I don't give two shiats about how smart you are if you have no desire to contribute to society in a meaningful way. There are plenty of people with IQs of 60 and under who manage to live meaningful lives, help others, and there are countless people who love and care for them (and vice versa). If you can't see something that simple, then I don't think you are putting your big brain to any use.

I'm not smart enough to join Mensa (pretty sure) but I don't have a problem with people who want to hang out with people who have similar interests. I do have a problem with people who want to use their position of power to degrade other people. You suck.

Lt_Ryan: redking194: Oh FFS. Anyone with an IQ below 70 is considered to have at least mild mental retardation. When did acknowledging reality become a bad thing?

It was part of the whole self esteem thing, everyone is special, everyone is perfect, and everyone gets a trophy.

A few weeks ago someone in the office used the term retard and a few people went off on how it was offensive. I had to bring up the fact that retard basically means to slow, and that mental retardation is a valid medical term in the DSM-IV. They still argued that people shouldn't be called retarded because it was offensive and they were just different.

I once had sex with someone who was slow. My friends told me I was farking retarded.

Saying that they are "carrots" implies that they are lump, inert objects that do nothing.

Yeah, someone with an IQ below 70 isn't exactly a rocket scientist, but they can, and do, live productive lives, and they don't need smug asshats like this douche coming down on them.
