While perhaps offensive to both carrots and mentally handicapped people, the carrots are at least taking it with some humor.

2012-12-22 11:41:59 AM
I don't have a problem with this statement at all.

2012-12-22 11:43:14 AM
If your IQ is 60 you probably aren't watching TV interviews with Mensa representatives, and even if you are you wouldn't recognize that as an insult.

I took the Mensa test years ago, just to see if I could pass. I did pass, but never joined. Why would I? I just wanted to see if I wasn't as stupid as I thought. Yet, in some ways, I am incredibly stupid. It's why I do not drive and have to be careful I don't wander or skate into the  street if I see something I find absolutely fascinating laying on  the ground. I'm surprised I've made it into my 40's, truth be told.

A high IQ does not equal "really smart" by any means. I'm living (so far) proof of that.

2012-12-22 11:44:13 AM
I don't know. Sometimes the smart move is to do nothing, so often people behave less intelligently than carrots.

Oh FFS. Anyone with an IQ below 70 is considered to have at least mild mental retardation. When did acknowledging reality become a bad thing?

2012-12-22 11:48:30 AM
That was an insult to carrots. He should have been politically correct and said mentality of a soap dish.

Sit a carrot in front of an iq test and see how well it scores, Mr Reality. Don't forget to let it train to write IQ tests like most Mensa members do.

Pretty sure carrots have an IQ around 0, so I can understand the outrage.

Because according to someone in the article an IQ of 60 is a "learning" disability instead of being barely able to know how to take a breath.

If you have an IQ somewhere around 60, then you are probably on the DBA team where I work.

Saying that they are "carrots" implies that they are lump, inert objects that do nothing.

Yeah, someone with an IQ below 70 isn't exactly a rocket scientist, but they can, and do, live productive lives, and they don't need smug asshats like this douche coming down on them.

My IQ was tested at Boston University at +130, but I have schizophrenia and I am a carrot

Wait, are they now calling stupid a learning disability?

2012-12-22 11:55:31 AM
It's this bullshiat attitude that caused me to reject Mensa. Yes I could have joined easily. That, however, is not the point. Their recruiting materials are so... arrogant. It's sickening.

It was part of the whole self esteem thing, everyone is special, everyone is perfect, and everyone gets a trophy.

A few weeks ago someone in the office used the term retard and a few people went off on how it was offensive. I had to bring up the fact that retard basically means to slow, and that mental retardation is a valid medical term in the DSM-IV. They still argued that people shouldn't be called retarded because it was offensive and they were just different.

I am no expert but I bet the headline is accurate and it would score less than 70...

British Mensa apologised for the comment, saying it was: "totally inappropriate and does not represent the society's official position or view".

Despite the fact that this is the entire reason Mensa exists. I imagine they get their IQ tested over and over again, and wear name-tags with their highest score prominently displayed.

IQ tests measure something, but it probably isn't intelligence, despite the tests' name.
