Really really need some farking points today at the expense of pool. Now that my personal favorite White, David Stockdale, is back with the men, points are assured!

Ow, my alarm hurts this morning. For the first time in a few weeks, I'm not using my insurance chip on the Gunners. I hope they don't let me down today. Wigan is playing an open game, and that usually suits Arsenal if the defense holds.

I picked Liverpool to win at home, but my insurance chip is on this game. The Reds are bound to find form, but it's hard to know when.

And no, I didn't queue up thatsracist.gif, because the joke was too obvious.

Predicted Wigan 1 - 3 Arsenal. What was I thinking.

Banker for the week is Spurs to beat Stoke. (http://predictor.talksport.co.uk/ FWIW)

Put my banker on Fulham away last week, never doing that again. If they can't beat QPR, then surely Liverpool should win at home, right?

Right?

After a big confidence-building game Monday, Arsenal burst onto the field like a ravenous pack of hungry...kittens.

God damn this team is unconvincing.

Morning all. Back on the East Coast after my first semester of grad school finished up. Passed out before 10 last night and just woke up. 4.5 hours of sleep the previous night and 13 hours of travel will do that to you (train to subway to flight1 and then flight 2). I again missed predicting the early match this morning, but if it ends in a draw I'll be super happy.

I have my insurance on Man Utd to beat Swansea and my insurance on either the Newcastle or Southampton match. Liverpool better win at home!

Also I have a friend going to the Spurs match at WHL so maybe I'll get to see him in the crowd.

FFPL Report - Round 17

It is your eff-eff-pee-'ell report for Round 17.

Top five are now on 1000+ pts. Obamartins moves into second - it is in fact a Toon 1-2 thanks to an anaemic display by Cognitive_Displaysia. In celebration, read about the keep that gives Newcastle it's name: Link

Somehow my lead is now 200pts.

At the bottom ScouserDuck attenuates towards zero, just like Liverpools chances of ever winning another championship. Above a half dozen candidates for deletion [zombies!!!] we have mitchcumstein1, setting a new personal best.

I was top scorer for the week with 165, over the 155 from 689908 and desertgeek someway off with 120. Scouserduck was joined in opprobrium by tom_servo_bit_me on -20, with 30/30 just behind on -15. Tom and bjmichel drop down onto Page 2 whilst stimied_in_a_rut and wynsworld crawl onto Page 1 - 'where dignity begins'.

689908 moved up 6 places, but Juicepats moved up 7 - a rapid climb at this stage of the season. Nobiology and nathanjr tied for the slide on three spots. Nobiology comforted by retaining his presidency of the Banker Bonus club, StRalphtheLiar, Juicepats and mitchcumstein1 all on 15s with themanofpa and martissimo on 10s.

Rounds of games on the 22nd, the 26th and the 29th. This is going to be nuts! To account for likely unavailability, set your predictions in advance using the pop-down list top-right on the My Predictions page.

I know that at least one game will be on Dutch TV. The old Myp2p stream (and the very rare Wiziwig stream) was always from a Dutch TV channel. Now whether it is a premium channel or not is another story, but you can get the announcing in English for at least one match.

NBC. Which if their tennis coverage is anything to go by, west coast satellite viewers will be screwed. Maybe others in smaller markets as well if they schedule live games on NBC proper. Almost no affiliates will be willing to bump those profitable Sat am infomercials for English soccer.

It wasn't terribly exciting. Wigan played well, looked dangerous. Left the field open but pressed upfield which caused Arsenal problems. Theo in the middle again but didn't impress. The Ox looked hardy on the wing. Too much scrambling at the back and Jack still throwing himself around like a human cannonball out there, and got himself booked again.

But the Gunners did scrape out a 1-0 win on a penalty, so there's that.

NBC is still a huge corporation, and the money they dropped on EPL is pretty much nothing to them. Supposedly, they are going to spread the games over the whole family of cable networks and show every game live. I just don't see them NOT trying out certain marquee matchups on NBC proper however, and that's where I see the liklihood of tape delay and preemption, especially for the early games. As for commenting teams, we can only pray we get the UK announcers, which I imagine will be the case for the smaller games. I'm sure they will put together some horrible US-centric abortion of a studio and main announcing team to talk down to us like children and cheerlead shamelessly for US players however.

NBC has stated there will be a streaming service. Iirc from the press release, all games will be available live.

As for them outbidding, NBC has been more aggressive lately. I think they are betting on shifting demographics and growing popularity in the US.

NBC is spending a ton to get as much programming as they can for their sports channel. Every EPL match will be on a NBC channel or online (and NBC's online TV coverage is pretty damn good). They'll have Formula 1 next year (moving from FOX and Speed, which is going away). They already have the MLS (and apparently did solid ratings this year) and some US National Team games. They'd also have some other league that plays something called hockey if the management there weren't bloody idiots.

FOX Soccer is on life support, but they have the Champions League and will have the World Cup in 2018.

I can't (well, I can, but I'm not going to) imagine a scenario where the ban would include Garands and carbines. They wouldn't mess with the CMP surely? M1A's might be thrown under the bus, but at least there's a chance of just making them fixed mag and using stripper clips. As for Mini's, maybe Bill Ruger's shameless rolling over in '94 will help Ruger's cause somehow. As far as 10/22's go, might as well ban freaking water, they have to be about the most widely owned firearms ever.

That isn't much to go on with. With beIN Sport coming in for those CL and EL rights in the next few years, FSC might not survive past the next two years. The only things they have going for them are the Men's and Women's World Cups (2018 and 2015 respectively). The only way I see them making it is if they went for the Collegiate games or tried to get a deal with the Eredivisie or Tippeligaen, and even those won't help in the long run.

Well, remember when GolTV first started they primarily showed South American football, so maybe Fox can find a niche. Fox Soccer Plus should be fine, they can always show more League,Union and AFL, Gaelic, hurling etc. like they used to. Scottish Prem might draw a few viewers, I'll usually make sure and catch Hearts when they are on.

In truth, I think the Plus channel will get cannibalized before FSC goes away. If nothing else, they could still have the FA Cup and League Cup to keep English soccer on their channel. NBC's deal only covers the EPL.

A damning statement on that from the BBC text commentary:

Former Leicester striker Steve Claridge on Final Score:

"Then the ball went over Carlton Cole's head and he is trying to control it with his foot and cannot see Leighton Baines. His red card says to me that the referee does not understand the game."

Not being able to see it (working and streams are blocked), just reading various sites shows that it was at worst a yellow. Hell, even Everton fans are saying it wasn't a red.

I think I am on 0 points for the weekend after Newcastle scored and ruined it for me and Spurs failed to score. The only saving grace is that I got a perfect on Everton. Why did I think Southampton would win? Why did I think Newcastle and QPR would draw (to be fair they almost did). Also I need to do my predos earlier so I stop starting at -10 getting the first result incorrect.

Glad the toffees got the 3pts, but all I could think after that game was how in the hell did the NFL replacement refs talk their way into BPL jobs?

When the BBC text says "he almost decapitated a Fulham defender there," that tells me that it's a goal I need to see ASAP.

2012-12-22 12:43:49 PM

SomebodyElsesShoes: You know it's bad when the West Ham fans chant "You don't know what your doing!" to the ref after an Everton player gets sent off.

To backup this comment, from the BBC:

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty at Upton Park:
"No-one can accuse West Ham fans of being one-eyed about the two dismissals. They were equally critical of Darron Gibson's red card for Everton as they were of Carlton Cole's."

West Ham has said that they will appeal Cole's sending off.

Remember Jonjo's one time juggle then volley last year against Chelsea after the FA cup? Imagine it closer to goal and just rocketed.

News from La Liga:

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has not picked Iker Casillas in goal tonight - it's the first time he's been dropped in 10 years! That is a run in the team.

I'm at a bar watching the pool match and the audio is for the barca game. The commenters are giving so much verbal relations to barca and especially messi. The dumbest thing was ...and I quote.. "E=mc2... And the m stands for messi."

You are correct. 45th PL game for Liverpool and his 1st assist.

Embarrassing really, but maybe that opens the flood gates.

As things stand, Liverpool is moving to 8th in the table on goal difference (+3 to Stoke's +2 and Norwich's -7).

As long as Fulham doesn't get one back, we're in the top half entering Boxing Day.

2012-12-22 01:51:09 PM
Meanwhile, 'Arry is letting his players have it:

"There are a lot of players at this club who earn far too much money for what they are; far, far, far too much money for their ability and what they give to the club.

"I don't really want to see the owners have their pants taken down like they have in the past. There's a lot of agents made money out of them."

QPR boss Harry Redknapp also confirmed that full-back Jose Bosingwa had been fined a fortnight's wages after refusing to sit on the bench for last weekend's 2-1 victory over Fulham.

He said: "He didn't want to be on the bench and didn't want to be a substitute, so he went home.

"He has been fined two weeks' wages, £130,000. Not too bad for two weeks, decent isn't it? Not too bad for playing on a Saturday, it's okay."

Asked how he might handle a player like that, Redknapp said: "We'll find out in January."

Four teams at 30 points and another at 29 points. Chelsea is one, but has a game in hand tomorrow. Man Utd comfortably ahead of City ahead of their match tomorrow.

NOW we've got ourselves a season.

shiate, missed all but the last 3 games this session.

Going to fill out the predictions for the next couple of rounds tonight, and attempt to escape from the mid-table obscurity.

Those predictions I did make:

Liverpool 3 - 1 Fulham (Banker & Insurance)
Swansea 1 - 2 Man United
Chelsea 1 - 0 Aston Villa,

I'm an idiot. But the system did fill out my missed predictions, and I had +15 from those.

Vidic at fault for that goal, didn't follow his marker. Evans screwed up following Michu. Still on point for 3-1, but United need to score again this half.

Nice to Michu!

2012-12-23 10:21:46 AM
Swansea played well defensively, but United did jack diddly on offense and even though they came out strong in the second half, the last 10 minutes they looked really flat. Terrible match from Rooney and overall just a bad performance. -30 points on that match for me, bah.

2012-12-23 10:21:53 AM
And another -10.

2012-12-23 10:22:45 AM
I lost 10 points in the FFPL, but not too surprising. Swans are tough and keep their discipline the whole game.

Could be but I don't know why. When Torres first joined Chelsea, the service he got was unbelievable. I could have scored so many that he missed. (To be fair, he was setting up others very nicely, but he was hired to score not assist.)

Real Madrid vs Manchester United
Could be closer than people think, but I expect Real to take it.

Arsenal vs Bayern Munich
Arsenal are going to get killed.

EL
Liverpool vs Zenit St Petersburg
The chances are good if Hulk leaves in January, but this is unlikely, so I expect Zenit to take it.

Chelsea vs Sparta Prague
Blues should take this one.

Newcastle vs Metalist Kharkiv
Toss-up

Tottenham vs Lyon
I like Spurs in this one, but only just.

2012-12-23 11:59:29 AM
Looking through the thread here, I might have been the only one to call a Swans-Man Utd draw. Albeit, I said it would be 2-2 so not a perfect.

And I'll be losing 10 on Chelsea after calling a draw. Still wasn't ready to trust them so I get what I deserve.

Arsenal are going to get killed.

Agree on both, but United/Real should be very close.

EL
Liverpool vs Zenit St Petersburg
The chances are good if Hulk leaves in January, but this is unlikely, so I expect Zenit to take it.

I don't think the chances are good for Liverpool in either case, Hulk or not.

Chelsea vs Sparta Prague
Blues should take this one.
I disagree wholeheartedly :) My hope is that Chelsea progresses through the FA cup and gets paired with one of the big guns, which is scheduled to be played between the two EL ties. This would take pressure off the first leg in Prague. Then the League Cup final, should Chelse get through the semis, is to be played the Sunday after the second leg.

In short, I hope they focus elsewhere, which would give Sparta a (slight) chance. Chelsea is not deep enough to stick through all three cups and the EPL.

Newcastle vs Metalist Kharkiv
Toss-up

Depends on Demba Ba. But I think Ukraine if February gives one advantage to Metalist, but the Ukrainian league is off for the winter while Newcastle will be in mid-season.

Tottenham vs Lyon
I like Spurs in this one, but only just.

Lyon is good, but so is Tottenham. Will be one to watch.

Other non-English matches I'm looking forward to:
Celtic v Juve
I was ragging on Celtic at the beginning and they qualified for the final 16. Juve looks to be back to their top of the Siere A form

AC Milan v Barcelona
Barcelona is a safe bet, but Milan can certainly take them.

Shakhtar v Dortmund
I have always liked both clubs. Dortmund deservedly came out of the group of death, so I look to them to go further in the competition.

EL:
Bayer Leverkusen v Benfica
Portuguese teams always do well in the UEFA Cup/EL. Last time I checked, Leverkusen is sitting the top of the Bundesliga

Anzhi Makhachkala v Hannover 96
I'm curious how far money will get Anzhi in Europe

Wizardry.

Nice save by Guzan, but a little farther to the right and Lucas Piazon gets his 1st. In truth, this one's been over for a while.
