Actually, maybe Derpy did appear in the episode; she just didn't say anything. At 7:36, while Rainbow Dash whistles innocently, she never actually touches the cloud to induce the lightning strike, and the sound effect is the same as the one from "The Last Roundup"...

Yeah, there was one last week that accumulated a few hundred replies, if I recall. A couple people got very angry when I laughed at it. This whole "Brony" thing is remarkably creepy to me.

It's funny how the same people come into MLP threads every week and say the exact same "WTF?", "You serious?", and retarded insults, like they're drawn to it like a moth to a light.

Ok, that wasn't one of my favorite episodes. In fact I think it's my least favorite of the series. "Let's see how many southern hick stereotypes we can cram in one episode! Let's do a few dozen denture jokes too, that never gets old!" Ugh. Everypony hated how Applejack was pushing them all too hard with the activities but then they all have a great time building a barn? Once again Applejack's episode is stolen by a background pony (first Derpy now Babs) and she finally gets a solo song and it was terrible. Maybe we shouldn't do any more Applejack episodes...she's great as the straight pony to all the others but on her own not so great. They even ended it with a Dear Princess Celestia letter, I thought we had moved past those.

Also Spike is now a cigarette lighter, and the fiddle playing country version of Octavia returns. I guess this episode also settles the question of whether Applejack's parents are dead or not.

Oh I have nothing against being country, but I think they overdo it with Applejack. Every episode about her doesn't have to be about barns and rodeos and square dances and farming does it?

I forgot to mention it before but what was Bon Bon, Lyra, Cloud Chaser and that pegasus from Wonderbolt Academy doing at the reunion? I know Bon Bon is a bit insane and feels the need to be in every single crowd scene, I figure she just crashed the reunion. No idea why the others are there though.

Not in my top ten either, but it wasn't that bad. I was glad to see Celestia get a letter for the first time this season. Yes, she told them not to bother writing unless they'd learned something, so they don't have to write, but it's a pretty timely lesson for the holidays.

Come to think of it, it's a more important lesson for parents to learn than the target audience. Grandma can barely taste anymore, just be thankful she's here (or you're there) for the Thanksgiving/Christmas turkey/ham/prime rib or whatever it is you're having... because she is. The kids don't care, it's omgCANDY and omgPRESENTS! That leaves the adults in the room, and in many families they spend half the holiday season bickering about whether the decorations were done right, who's spending too much time watching football, who's wasting time fussing over things that don't even matter, whether so-and-so's a biatch for showing up to the Joneses' party but not our party, why you parked now instead of going for one more circle around the lot to park three spaces closer...

I'll probably like it better when I rewatch it. I was just hoping we would learn a lot about Applejack and her family in this episode but they spent nearly the whole episode on silly gags instead. Maybe my expectations were just too high. This is only Babs second appearance and I think she has gotten far more character growth than Applejack has in the entire series (we learn she apparently dealt with her bullying problem, transferred to a new school and has two new blank flank friends who might join the club, possibilities for future episodes).

Good point about the lesson for adults; our family get together are often like that too. More bickering about silly pointless stuff than actually enjoying their time together.

Maybe the Apple family is just that freaking big. I bet if you go far enough out, you'd find donkeys, zebras, griffons, humans, Princess Cadence,...

I know you are trolling (badly) but I'd still love to hear an explanation as to how watching a cartoon about ponies and talking about the show with other adults satisfies some perverts attraction to human children. Does watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Adventure Time also make people pedophiles? Of course there is no rational explanation. There are so many other way one could make fun of someone for watching a cartoon, but going with the pedophile thing is just retarded. If you must desperately cry out for attention at least put a little effort into it.

One of the writers answered a question on Twitter earlier about the shooting stars and confirmed that they were indeed meant as a nod to Applejack's parents. So yes, Applejack, Big Macintosh and Applebloom are officially orphans. I really wish they had worked it into the episode more though, it was the perfect time. Even a short quiet scene with Applejack looking at a photo of her parents, or Applebloom becoming sad because she misses them.

Speaking of which Applebloom is so young so they must have died not that long ago, and it must have been some type of accident though I'm sure they will never go into detail about it, if it is ever mentioned on the show at all. Now we need to find out what the deal with Scootaloo is, does she even have a home let alone a family. Maybe the mysterious episode 8 will answer some questions.

I'd have to bet they died just before Applejack got her cutie mark.

Applebloom had probably just been born (explaining why she wasn't out there to see AJ off to the big city), they died, and AJ farked off to Manehattan not wanting to be around the farm anymore, which sets up the whole story of the sonic rainboom leading her back home.

Neat to get confirmation on the parents, but I think the real best things about the episode had to be young! Granny Smith and Baby Applejack.

And I guess it's nice that they tossed in Uncle Strudel from Family Appreciation Day as well...I love the continuity.

Of course not. Let's say AJ ran off to Manehattan 8 to 10 years ago. Applebloom would have just been born... which makes the story more tragic, if you think about it.

Damn, it's dusty in here. That makes perfect sense. As to why it never got explained on the series, suppose you're an animator working on a cartoon for the target demographic. Most of the audience is at an age when their parents are (according to the actuarial tables) pretty much immortal for the next few years, and why deprive them of that illusion? For the minority of your audience (i.e., those children whose parent(s) rolled the actuarial equivalent of snake eyes), those kids and their caregivers will get it, and they now have a character to whom they can relate on a much deeper level.

On a lighter note, here's to the guy with the projection issues...

It's not. The lyrics "Raise this barn" are a bit drawled in AJ's song... more like "raise zis barn" which is tongue-in-cheek being misheard as "racist barn"

/liked the line about being afraid of heights
//liked the acknowledgement of AJ's parents even more. subtle and touching
