(Apple)   My 83 year old dad is a retired voice professor who still sings like a 20 year old. I made him an iPhone app that teaches his method & lets singers record and send their voice for review. Help spread the word so my parents have an awesome Christmas   (itunes.apple.com) divider line 27

Seriously, let me know when the Android version comes out.

OK will check it out. I'm a terrible singer and am looking for things to level up my singing. Once day I aspire to be a non-cringeworthy mediocre singer.

So if this app is successful your father will be all swamped with submissions.

Dear Dad,

After suffering through another season of American Idol, The Voice, X-Factor and whatever else my wife likes to watch, I have some bad news for you about actual singing "talent"
.
No one cares.

Instead, your son should have just written an app that listens to any off-key, random tempo performance with an unrecognizable melody and says things like "Absolutely Incredible", "You are going to be a recording star", or "that was one of the best performances ever".

Regards,

Seconded. My son is in choir and I would so get this to help him out.

Enjoy your retirement, Pa. Here's some more work!

I keeed, I keed. That's pretty cool. I already know I can't sing worth a damn. It certainly doesn't help that I'm legally deaf. If you can't properly hear a note, I don't think it's possibly to match it. Though I suppose if someone has natural talent they could. Alas, I do nay ave no talent fuur sangen.

Thanks! We're looking into it, but decided to start with iOS since that's what I'm familiar with.

I developed the app with a platform that allows for publishing to multiple device types, but I'm going to need to get my hands on an Android device to do testing, and I'm also not sure if the videos are in a compatible format either. But I'll be looking into it and will post a follow-up.

Do you have a preference for the store? Google Play or would Amazon's app store work? I'm not familiar with the pros and cons of the two. Thanks again for the feedback.

Thanks! His students mean the world to him and I figured this would give him a way of connecting with new ones and helping them, even if they don't study with him in person.

Cool. Remember not to fall for gimmicks -- the singing voice should be a natural extension of your speaking voice and should never feel strain or effort if you're doing it right. Hope to hear a voice recording from you soon (make sure to mention your Fark username in the email when you send it from the app!)

This is a good problem to have. :) Aiming for an update including the first reviews in January.

Heh. That's the idea! Despite being 83, he's only been retired for a few years now and he misses it.

The My Little Pony Killer: What does it mean to "sing like a 20 year old?"

Heh. Should have been "sings better than most 20 year olds", but I used up every character of space in the headline.

If the question was at all serious (I'm bad at telling sometimes), most people lose the strength of their voices over time because they're not using their voice right. I'm going to post a YouTube link in a minute which you can check out to see what I'm talking about.

I swear he sounds like he's singing with an amp and a big set of speakers, but it's just him. Picture this, basically:

SearchN: Hey subs,

Can we get a sample of his singing?

Here is a YouTube video of him performing on his 80th birthday.

Live, no mic:

Even if it's not your kind of music, stick around to 1:28. Totally crazy to know that voice is coming from an 80 year old. :)

Note: the video above was recorded with a consumer camera, so isn't the best quality. However, the recordings in the app were done with a much better setup.

Subby: My 83 year old mother still has sex like a 20 year old, but you don't see me hawking videos on Fark trying to get the word out now, do you?

I really don't have a point, I just didn't want to be the only one with that mental image in my head.

:)

/Go dad!

I use Google Play because it was pre-installed, and "just works".  So I never bothered to look into any other stores.

My 14 year old just downloaded it. I will let you let you know what he thinks. Thx!
