wtf is a showrunner?

some_beer_drinker: wtf is a showrunner?

From Wikipedia: "Showrunner" is a term originating in the United States television industry referring to the person who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a television series-although such persons generally are credited as an executive producer or supervising producer.

For example, Vince Gilligan is the showrunner for Breaking Bad.

I had never heard of a showrunner either until a few days ago. Heard it the first time in another story about TWD.

oh good, more mindless gun violence and killing on TV!!  Yay.

just what we need after Sandy Hook.

First Darabont, now Mazzara.  This doesn't look good.  They were getting their highest ratings ever in season 3.  What the hell is going on?

The next showrunner for "The Walking Dead" will be Ozzie Guillen?

AMC suits are idiots.  Mazzara probably wanted more characterization or bring the show back to the comic's central theme--the humans are the Walking Dead.  AMC was probably all, "MOAR ZOMBIES!"

/Total speculation
//However, since it's their highest-rated show, AND they have complete control over it, you know it's under a freakin' microscope.

Maybe some people are growing a conscience and realize that contributing to creating a culture of violence is not a good idea.

I think it started to catch on during LOST.  In the last couple of seasons, it started to get a little confusing as to who was actually controlling the show--Abrams, Lindelof, or Cuse.   I know Davies & Moffat have been referred to as Doctor Who showrunners in British media.  Maybe it's a British term?

Season 2 Carl, I'd agree.  Current Carl?  Only if Mazzara had been found with a gunshot to the head.

In a lot of ways it looks like she's going to be worse. Lorie was biatchy and had a fetish for playing Shane and Rick off each other, Andrea is straight up turning her back on the group just to get some d*ck.

There was nothing confusing about who was running Lost. Abrams was around for the pilot only. He occasionally popped his head in and may have consulted a couple of times, but he wasn't running anything. Lindelof and Cuse were basically equal in showrunner capacity.

There are going to be some great behind the scenes books written about this show if it ends as popular as it is now.

I'm sure they'll spend weeks looking for a new showrunner, dragging it out as long as possible to raise the suspense. Little do they know, he's been in the barn the whole time.

I'm just hoping that this transition doesn't leave us stuck at a farmhouse for half a season.

Well, judging by ratings as of the mid season break, I'd say that 15.2 million people do.

Or were you trying to be cute?

Nope. Industry term for exec producer who actually does something. The boss. http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_show_runners

British shows generally have smaller writing staff, fewer episodes and thus less need for the distinction.

fusillade762: First Darabont, now Mazzara.  This doesn't look good.  They were getting their highest ratings ever in season 3.  What the hell is going on?

They got great ratings (comparatively) for season 1.  They fired Darabont.  Season 2 sucked ass until the end but still grew ratings numbers. Season 3 part 1 hit record numbers.  We can assume the second half is going to garner the same numbers.

So if you're AMC, what do you do?  You fire the showrunner.  Because if success teaches a showrunner anything, it's that the people paying for the show don't know what the hell they're doing.  So as the showrunner, you start mouthing off to the people writing the paychecks.

This usually ends in disaster, but AMC managed to break clean from Darabont, so maybe they can do it with Mazzara.  After all, they clearly have a crew of script-writers who can keep the series going.  At this point it isn't about the comic anymore - it's about the 15 million viewers they've managed to snag.  The majority of the viewers haven't read the comic, don't care about the comic, and are invested in the TV show.

The question we're all wondering of course is, does this mean more expensive zombie action and interesting plot twists (Yay!), or more low budget sitting around on a farm listening to everyone discuss their feelings? (Boo!)

Gotta admit I did a "WTF?" the first time I saw the Governor onscreen. That part in the DW Christmas special was the only other thing I'd ever seen him in.

TOWG: I had never heard of a showrunner either until a few days ago. Heard it the first time in another story about TWD.

I first heard about it earlier this year on Greg Fitzsimmons podcast. Apparently showrunner is like head writer with more of a hands on producer role.

Either way, season 3 redeemed TWD from the awful farm season, so this is kinda bad news. Then again, AMC isn't exactly know for making smart business decisions. I'm surprised Breaking Bad has remained basically unscathed.

Showrunner: (n)
1. An executive producer that isn't just stamped onto the project having never done even 10 minutes of work bringing the production to air.
2. Someone who works for their paycheck.

Followed by AMC quickly hiring former Dr Who producer Steven Moffat as replacement, who will immediately introduce gay zombies having homo buttsex in the streets into the storyline and hammer the idea of "The Prancing Dead" at the audience as often as possible.

And then all the survivors will mope in remorse throughout the season over all the gay zombies they killed, wondering if the Apocalypse has compromised their morals against gay-bashing.
