I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and believe that she was referring to Pho, which is one of the most popular soups of Asia. And kudos to her for knowing it's Vietnamese.

And of course... I'd hit that like Dec 21st Apocalyptic Fail

I'll give her some of my Asian soup.

/And by "Asian soup", I mean pho.

2012-12-21 03:11:14 PM
I'm in Canada and there's more pho shops around this town than doughnut shops.

I, too, would like to try some authentic Vietnamese soup in Saigon, er, Ho Chi Minh City. Sure, I can find authentic Vietnamese soup in most major cities around the country, but it would be cool to try some in Vietnam.

Actually, the best soup I ever had was in Vietnam. Depending on what she's looking for, her response to that question wasn't that bad.

Well, even there... You guys don't acknowledge beans or onions, so you're not going to have the best possible winter soups. You just can't!

She should have won because she was able to escape the time warp that Cranston is stuck in. Truly impressive.

I don't think you understand what the word authentic means. I lived in Korea for 2 years, have yet to find a Korean restaurant in the states that can compare to authentic gamjatang or samgyeopsal in Korea. I've traveled all over Asia and its the same everywhere I've been. Thai food in the states, even at an "authentic" Thai restaurant is nothing like the real thing in Thailand. Haven't been to Vietnam yet but I have a few Vietnamese friends and they said pho here is not as good as in Vietnam.

Wanna know what's good in Ho Chi Minh City?

KFC and Lao-Lao.

And I'm joking about the KFC.

Best Chinese food - better than what you'd find in China - are to be found in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, where the best chefs fled to, after the Cultural Revolution tried to kill every capitalistic running dog chef. The Chinese cuisine you get in China itself now are basically struggler recreations that a new generation of cooks are attempting to recreate without any of the traditional knowledge, skills, and flavors. When we have people visit from China they want to go eat in the SGV because they have heard how much better it is there than back home. And having eaten in China, I have to agree with them.

You need to move to Duluth, GA. There are countless Korean restaurants here that serve food indistinguishable from the stuff I remember eating while in Korea.

The best soup I have ever eaten was some bean soup I had in Istanbul. But it was on the European side, so it doesn't count as Asian soup. Interestingly enough, they had a sign up that said "World's best bean soup" and sure enough, it was.

The Phô in Saigon is somewhat tastier than the USA import, maybe. Or it could be a placebo. Much bigger selection of greens to put in the phõ. The thing is, for $1 or 21000 dong, you get a normal portion instead of $6 for a monstrous sized portion.
