This Mayan apocalypse twas set up by a master time traveler and promoter named John Cusack. He knew that '2012' DVD sales would be low and so he planted that calendar all those years ago. It was the most genius piece of marketing in history.

No, but we are. That is why world wide events happening at a specific time are usually reported in UTC or GMT as a default.

So, dressing in a hocky mask and leather jacket, arming myself with a sawed off shotgun and bow

I am fairly sure there was no prophecy in the first place, so it wouldn't say anything - it just happens their calender is doing something similar to ours when going from 999AD to 1000AD (or 9999AD to 10000AD), but the nature of the system used to measure times means there is no way to add the digit, so a new level of counting would have needed to be invented if it was still in use - so the equivalent of if we said it was the 3rd millenium, 1st century, 2nd decade, 3rd year to mean 2012, then at 9999AD we would have to invent a word for each 10000 years (decamillenium?) to deal with that, and if we hadn't created that word yet that wouldn't constitute a prophecy that the world would end on 31st December 9999AD

Hard to say considering, you know, there was no prophecy.

A friend of mine said it was supposed to end 7 months ago because the Mayans didn't know to account for leap years. I don't know, myself.

The article has a nutty quote from Nobel winner Rigaberta Menchu. Check out her wiki. The Nobel folks seem to have dropped the ball on that one. Though I don't mean to minimize the war.

Bad news, Berty: the Mayans ain't talking.
