Who the fark hates Richard Engel? He's one of the few actual journalists left whose opinion on middle eastern topics actually farking matters. He has been in the Middle East for like a decade now. He has filed reports about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the subsequent after math. He is one of the few that continued to care years later. He was there for the Egyptian revolution. He was there in Libya. Now he's in Syria. Subby, you seriously think this was Richard Engel's first day in the Middle East? He speaks Arabic for farks sake, the guy knows what the hell he's doing.

I'm guessing it's because Engel works for the mainstream MSM liberal elite media, right?

There is a reporter/correspondent I see occasionally on Dianne Sawyer World News. He always reporting from middle east hot spots. In a way he is a tall and striking blond but he also has a smarmy, douche bag, frat boy quality. i always get the feeling that he his hoping to die on assignment and preferably, on camera.

I like Engel, too. I had no idea he had been kidnapped until he had been released/rescued -- I'm guessing Newtown buried that story.

I don't get the hate here. Engel is very bright, well informed, takes his job seriously...and he speaks fluent Arabic, for Pete's sake, which is way more than most American foreign correspondents can say. He's covered some incredibly dangerous areas that would most likely cause Subby to immediately wet both sides of his pants. Did he get over-confident? Maybe. That's not a capital crime. Plenty of other journalists (and other civilians) have been kidnapped while trying to do their job in war-torn areas. It's not like he was backpacking through Iran on a whim.

He's not related to Friedrich Engels, if that's what's got some of you all pissy.

I'm important and the camera looks only at me!

The public are fools and I've got whiter teeth than those whores at Fox!
They can ban ABC, the shriveled old trolls.
And the simpletons at CBS are sad and droll.
Can't they see?
CAN'T THEY SEE!

No, not that.

No one reported it until they were rescued. NBC said they knew they were missing and probably kidnapped, but didn't report it because they didn't want to let the kidnappers know the value of their captives.

2012-12-21 11:32:00 AM
Who?

2012-12-21 11:32:39 AM
There was a media "blackout" over his kidnapping, a kind of gentleman's agreement to keep it under wraps so negotiations go smoother... at least that was the explanation.
Gawker decided to publish details anyway. Many MSM types freaked out, but a few indie journos (Like Robert Young Pelton, who tried to get Daniel Pearle sprung and failed for want of better media coverage) defended Gawker.
Pelton himself was kidnapped by FARC years ago and says that NatGeo abandoned him, covering their ass by claiming they had no idea why he was there in the first place... despite the proof RYP had that he was sent there by NatGeo and Discovery, back when he had that Dangerous Places show.

You speak as if you know him quite intimately. There may be twelve bodies in his back yard, who knows. Settle down. Everyone has enemies. Perhaps Subby has to stand quite close to the urinal so others don't notice his shortcomings while Mr. Engel stands back a foot and still smacks the cold porcelain by accident. Life is unfair.

Well, given his backyard is the Middle East, I imagine there are a hell of a lot more than 12 bodies there.

I'm sure many journalists respect and even envy a lot HST's work, but I don't think a war correspondent on an MSM outlet is in any way trying to implement his or her own gonzo-esque work.

The internet is littered with "freelance journalists" blogging away in a manner directly aping HST. Not so much on the telly.

You sound like a profoundly unhappy person. Take a Xanax. Then, if you can still explain your distaste for war correspondents without needing idiotic, hyperbolic phrases like, "feed on the corpses of the innocent," come back and share with the rest of the group.

I'm going with the latter. It kind of sounds like what people say when journalists "report" on dangerous weather by standing in the middle of it, as if there's no difference between a natural phenomenon that will happen anyway versus man-made disasters that could be prevented with sunlight.

Hmmm, if my comment is considered trolling then that makes yours trolling a troll. Or maybe you just call everyone with an opinion you don't agree with a troll which then makes you ignorant as well as idiotic. I bet you could also find a way to justify calling me an anti-semite and homophobe if you put a little effort into it, there Chachi.
