Debeo Summa Credo: If the GOP is "already talking about it", then why didnt they pass plan B?

Plan B was a Republicans-only plan that no Democrat was going to vote for and only some Republicans were. Obama's plan is one that most Democrats will vote for, and enough Republicans to make it pass. The problem is that the democrats cannot force a vote on it in congress. If Dems were willing to go for Plan B then would have passed too.

I thought you knew how the government functions, since you used to be a blind sheeple libby-lib like us until you saw the light and became a wondrous free-thinking juggernaut?

Debeo Summa Credo: If markets do tank, and the GOP has offered an extension of the status quo, do you think Obama won't be asked why he's allowing markets to tank by not extending?

And if asked he can respond "I have been willing to compromise through this entire process. I offered substantive compromises. The Republican rejected that. The Republicans are utterly unwilling to move one bit from their position. It is incumbent on the House leadership to pass a a compromise proposal."

Philip Francis Queeg: Debeo Summa Credo: If they were going to cave to Obama's demands, then why didn't they pass plan B?

The plan B vote was a vote of no confidence in Boehner. After January 3, when the cliff has been passed, the markets are tanking, and the Republicans are taking enormous heat from all sides for the mess, the new Speaker, whoever he/she may be, will be under enormous pressure to get a compromise deal through. They already played chicken and lost. Playing it yet again isn't going to work

It doesn't even require a new speaker. A simple back-room tally of which Republican wants what would be enough for Boehner to support the Democrats' bill. I can't be sure, but I figure either Boehner got blind-sided by plan-b failing to pass, or they crafted plan-b to show America just what they were working with and are finally ready to shed the teabaggers. Well, I think either way they are ready to be rid of the teabaggers.

They won't go quietly and they still have the strength of their rabid base to primary the establishment GOP

So the teahadists stabbed Boehner in the back for the umpteenth time in the last few years? You mean they refuse to compromise or work with anyone, and are betraying a complete lack of understanding of economics and the debt ceiling itself? You mean EVERYTHING we knew would happen if Boehner tried to actually do his job (i.e., put a bill...ANY bill, for f*ck's sake...in front of Obama), has happened?

This is my shocked face.

Oh well, at least I get to make fun of my Republican shill of a buddy, who argued all weak that finally Congress is putting something in front of Obama, and that Obama was betraying America if he vetoed and blah blah blah. He didn't believe me when I told him that Boehner's career was about to implode and that "plan B" was a laughable paper tiger.

How out of touch are GOPers these days? Why don't they see what's happening to their own party? Wake the fark up guys...take your party back.

Dog Welder: Debeo Summa Credo: If the GOP is "already talking about it", then why didnt they pass plan B? You seem to think its a forgone conclusion that the dems will be in the driver's seat in January and get what Obama originally wanted. If that is so obvious, why wouldn't the GOP try to make/take a better deal now? At least throw plan b out there and see what the dems come back with.

For a few reasons:

1) The GOP is currently very dysfunctional. There's a flatout civil war happening between the old guard and the Teahadists.
2) The Plan B had a number of poison pills in it that would have further screwed the middle class and poor, and many in the party realized it.
3) Plan B had zero chance of passing the Senate or being signed even if it did.
4) Maybe there are reasonable people currently in the GOP who are simply sick of all these games and want to get this resolved. "Plan B" was a waste of time. There are plenty of Republicans who were FOR the latest Obama offer that Boehner scoffed at.

The democrats don't have to come back with ANYTHING. There's already a bill that passed through the Senate making all the Bush tax cuts for people making under $250k permanent that's been sitting on Boehner's desk for months. Also, Obama and the democrats realize they have all the leverage in the world right now.

Look, I've been a Republican for 25 years now. I have never seen a GOP Congressional class so full of derp that they can't work to get a deal done. They've gone way too far to the right and a lot of people just don't seem to see it.

I like you. You say that you are a repub, but you also have common sense (at least as far as i have read). It's rare and refreshing.

error 303: Speaker of the house
Doling out the charm
Ready with a handshake
And an open palm
Tells a saucy tale
Makes a little stir
Customers appreciate a bon-viveur

Glad to do a friend a favor
Doesn't cost me to be nice
But nothing gets you nothing
Everything has got a little price!

Speaker of the house
Keeper of the zoo
Ready to relieve 'em
Of a sou or two
Watering the wine
Making up the weight
Pickin' up their knick-knacks
When they can't see straight
Everybody loves a landlord
Everybody's bosom friend
I do whatever pleases
Jesus! Won't I bleed 'em in the end!

I love you so much right now.

Tyrone Slothrop: Tommy Moo: Guys, Boehner is honestly a decent guy compared to the rest of his party. It's that farking shiatweasel Cantor that is constantly poisoning the well. Consider what you just saw: Boehner was willing to raise taxes on millionaires. Who would have considered such a thing months ago? This might not be enough to please the Democrats, but at least he is trying to take small steps in that direction.

That's the point. Boehner is completely ineffective and can't control his own party.

I, for one, don't have a problem with individual congressmen acting on each issue according to their own convictions. If you ask me, the problem with our Congress is that there's too much of one leader controlling his own party. There should be more dynamic factioning, with people switching sides and genuinely considering each argument, instead of picking a side and lining up 100% like a football team.

That's going to be "Speaker Shiatweasel" in a few weeks.

Did Boehner lose his reelection? Or are you just suggesting that his party will oust him as speaker?

I think the chances are very small that Boehner will win re-election as Speaker in january.

Philip Francis Queeg: I think the chances are very small that Boehner will win re-election as Speaker in january.

And be replaced by a more right-wing or left-wing speaker?

He only had 21 people shoot him down on the Plan B thing. It isn't like they can put forth anyone further to the right and be met with better success in the house if the teabaggers refuse to be corralled. So any change in Speaker moving to the right will do nothing for republicans. A move to the left and crafting bills that blue dogs go in on would give them the power to do more things without the teabaggers, but will the more moderate republicans be willing to go for that?

And if all they want is to stamp their feet and block all legislation, they hardly need another speaker anyways. If the republicans were united in that goal I'm sure boehner would be up to that task.

2012-12-21 03:28:25 PM
Debeo Summa Credo:

Thanks. That is interesting. Not sure why the GOP would have the votes for that then, but not for plan B now.

Basically, Plan B needed to be passed by GOP support alone, since it was the GOP answer in negotiations.  No Democrat would vote for it when they could hold out for a better deal.  And the Teatards shat in that punch bowl.

By contrast, for the Democratic plan to pass the House, it only needs the Democrats to hold together (which they are) and a few Republican defectors that don't want the "Rep. XYZ voted to raise middle class taxes!" ads running against them.

The GOP is dying from self-inflicted wounds.

Boehner's been shown to be powerless too many times to stay. I'm guessing they will select someone who they trust to obstruct as much as possible. Probably someone who's name rhymes with "Bantor".

And if you go with the payments for the full year, it's still 29.13%.

robodog: an average family sitting at the median household income, that has two kids, and a mortgage
pays around a 2% income tax. 2%. wtf. that is the middle class.
they pay almost nothing. that's a big reason why we have no money. you know this. wtf is going on here?
fark you, I'm solidly in the middle class and my total tax burden is around 55% of my income, in fact if you throw in employer payroll taxes and medical insurance I'm at close to 70% of my potential income going to what in the rest of the civilized world would be taxes. In other words I'm paying 20% more of my income to get worse outcomes than all those crazy socialized countries, all so the Koch brothers and Mittens and their ilk can pay 0-15% taxes. Screw that.

YOU ARE LYING
people in the top tax bracket with no dependents, no mortgage, no student loans, just taking the standard deduction pay no where near that much.
give me your hypothetical dependents, state of residence, income, housing situation, marraige status, student loan number, and I'll prove jsut how full of shiat you are.
no one in this country pays significant taxes. no one.

Hey, the right said the number-one job was making Obama a one-term president, and they spent the last four years farking everything up as best they could and trying to pin it all on him. Now that their plan went up in massive flames, the right is going to do their best to just destroy America out of hate and spite. They don't give a shiat about the country or the citizens, only themselves. And the Tea Party is this mindset in the flesh. They'll cheer when America crumbles in flames, because they'll see it as a divine cleansing, the watering of the tree of liberty they've cried for so much.

Vegan Meat Popsicle: Dog Welder: Boehner made a huge boneheaded gamble and is going to pay a steep political price for this. I'll be shocked if he's still Speaker in 30 days.

On top of that, he's effectively lost any chance at negotiating anything he or his party wanted at all and now the issue for republicans has become a matter of "give Obama what he wants or dig in your heels and very publicly and loudly make it obvious that you're the party causing the pain people are feeling in their pocketbooks".

Obama can basically walk out on stage twice next month and say from his bully pulpits, with complete and absolute honesty, "Your taxes just went up, your grandma can't afford her medicine now and your town just lost 500 army base jobs because the republicans rejected a fix that the republicans proposed".

Obama's hands are completely clean in this and the republicans are completely covered in the feces they flung at each other.

What a bunch of nimrods. Although republicans and their supporters were warned repeatedly by the rest of us that this was the inevitable outcome at some point if they didn't stop acting like spoiled children.
Really though, who could have honestly known that throwing a 2 years long, foot-stomping, face-reddening, ear-splitting temper tantrum because the guy in the white house is a black democrat wouldn't result in sound policy?

Not to threadjack, but I recently learned that the term "bully pulpit" was coined by Teddy Roosevelt and doesn't mean "blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people pupit" but "superb" or "wonderful platform from which to advocate an agenda" (Link).

/also, "Nimrod" was the name of a near-superhuman hunter (Link) until Daffy Duck used the name ironically for Elmer Fudd (Link)

No, I think my tax rate is pretty fair overall but could probably go up a few percentage points. I benefited greatly from the federal government paying for my Master's degree four years ago, and it is right for me to pay them back for their investment. Of course, it does help that I have no food/gas/energy/utility/housing expenses right now to afford higher taxes, but I would adjust and be fine even under normal circumstances with the tax rate I'm paying this year.

My point was more that I'm not a married couple with 2 kids and a mortgage paying a 2% federal income tax rate. I'll have a rather simple tax return this year. No itemizing, no education breaks, no EITC, no child tax credits...the only breaks I'm getting are from health insurance and retirement contributions, and those are both kind of silly since I would buy health insurance and pay into a retirement account regardless of those tax breaks. Accusing me of being concerned about a too high tax rate is laughable when there are tons of Americans complaining about their taxes who make a thousand times (and some who make a million times) what I do and have an effective federal tax rate equal to or less than what I have.

We suggested cutting the military budget, but conservatives went insane. Wow, you have taken a really simplistic view of the conservative positions. Not surprising, it does take a lot of thought to understand them and liberals just don't have the brain power to understand conservatism. Big Bird is under no death threat. If you think defunding PBS is akin to murder, then you aren't very bright. PBS can stand on its own, and doesn't need to be given my tax money to blabber out liberal talking points all day long. Same goes for NPR, which should also be defunded.

He's preparing to help out the muslim brotherhood while you're too busy looking the other way. Do your research.

And, to really top off your parade of ignorance, you claim Obomber is doing great things with alternative energy. Problem is, he's giving tens of billions of dollars to alt. energy companies, only to have them go bankrupt after funneling millions back to his pockets.

Their views ARE simplistic.

"The number-one job is to make Obama a one-term president."- McConnell

And for four years conservatives did just that, farking up America as much as they could and trying to blame it on Obama, while offering absolutely nothing except a record number of anti-woman and anti-gay laws. And now that they failed, they've gone into buttfark-insane overdrive.

Yeah, that tiny little pitiful amount of 1 cent that goes from you to PBS and NPR is so horrible and bankrupting America. It's not, according to conservatives, the defense budget that's twice as big as the next five countries COMBINED, and which the military has stated many times that they don't want it that high (and that war they've been demanding? You'd know if YOU had been paying attention: Iran).

And there's those right-wing conspiracy theories, about Obama being a Muslim and doing things Romney was proven to do. You guys love to project.

Right...I keep forgetting that absolutely everything is Obama's fault in this country.

Republicans would rather tear the country apart with partisan propoganda than actually, I dunno, do the jobs they were elected to do? Yeah, that's totally Obama's fault. When your entire political platform is "let's do everything we can to sabotage the other guy", you really don't get a pass on guilt when stuff doesn't go right. If you seriously believe that Boehner is guilt-free, then I'm afraid there's just no help for you. So I stand by my original statement, go crawl back in your hole. Adults are talking.

And before you build a strawman of me to attack, I'll tell you that I don't think Obama's a saint, and I don't know if his policies will fix the country. I DO however know that he was the man elected (twice) to try, and he might have actually done some good if Republicans had actually tried to work with him instead of leaving flaming bags of dog poop on his doorstep and then running to the tabloids to point out his shoes smelled like shiat.
