Extrapolating trends, how does it work?

How about we merge branches of the military to eliminate duplication of pencil pushers and generals?

Well, take the cap off of the amount of income that funds social security. This just gives an extra tax break to the wealthier Americans. The business owners are the ones that have raped the pension funds and dumped the worker on their ear when they get to old to work anyway.

2012-12-20 08:20:09 PM
Yep, nothing will change at all in the next 30 years.

2012-12-20 08:21:56 PM
Because 30-year economic projections are always incredibly accurate and unquestionable.

Also, Kakaria can eat a bowl of flaming dicks, along with every right-wing echo chamber myrmidon that has poisoned the word "entitlement".

Who the fark needs old money billionaires, soul-sucking mega-corporations, and an overinflated military budget?

We need to open up some FEMA camps.

2012-12-20 08:25:34 PM
Because we're so stupid that we will continue to have tax rates that are not sustainable? Because we're so useless that we will continue to spend billions on out-of-date and unwanted weapons systems? Because we will continue to cap the payroll amount for social security without taking into account that the wealthier live longer and will draw on the funds longer? Because we are so paranoid and ignorant that we will keep fighting a war on drug that has done nothing but enrich drug cartels and terrorists?

...At this rate, the politics tab will be nothing but Fareed Zakaria biatching about the budget!

How about we pay people a decent living wage, so they can spend money, increase demand, increase work force to meet demand, which then increases tax revenue which can be used to meet the spending of our government?

This wasn't that tough.

because the boomers won't continue to retire and medical costs won't continue to escalate?
if you wouldn't bet your life on those trends continuing for a mere $1000 return you'd be an idiot.
those trends are what is known as a mortal lock, only slightly less probable than the sun rising in the east tomorrow. that's why locking in the bush tax cuts was the death knell of the european style welfare state governance in america, even though I suppose it was never much more than a dream anyway.
it is impossible now.
that's what you get for saying *well what is the alternative?*
as your democrat party moved to the right every year for last 20 years.
you got republican light and conservative.

The years passed, mankind became stupider at a frightening rate. Some had high hopes the genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution, but sadly the greatest minds and resources where focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections.

Simple rule that will cut Medicare expenses greatly: in order to be eligible for Medicare, you must have a living will on file. No restrictions on what it says, but you must document your end-of-life wishes and communicate those clearly to your medical providers.

wildcardjack: How about we merge branches of the military to eliminate duplication of pencil pushers and generals?

By 2023 with our current tax rates Social Security and Medicare alone will use more money than we take in even if you cut all Defense, education, transportation, welfare, and energy to zero.

Something something rearanging deck chairs on the titanic.

Alright just kill everyone at 80. Or maybe we start taking pride in the fact that we spend most of our money on healthcare and ensuring healthy lives for as long as possible instead of bombs? I think it would probably be a sign of progress.

I think we should just feed off the synergy of other Fark threads and just arm everyone and let Darwinism go into over drive.

Given the choice, I'm sure a lot of politicians would advocate tossing granny into the tar pit at 80 then.

Granny is easy to lie to. No need to alienate a huge part of the electorate. Tell her she'll be safe until "her time". She cares about Metamucil and knitting, and 7th grade Math is now too tough for her. You can get elected and then just crush her on C-SPAN and she won't even know it.

The funding and expenditures for SSI and Medicare are kept separate from the general pot. They do not and cannot run a deficit. If they take in less than they need to payout, people will automatically get X pennies on the dollar.

2012-12-20 08:51:13 PM
Or we could raise taxes, given that we have some of the lowest taxes in the developed world already.

/God forbid taxes go up!

social security has been taking in less than it pays out for like 5 years now.

2012-12-20 08:54:49 PM
the idea that the pot is *separate* would be comical if it wasn't so disastrous. the deficit SS has been running for the last 5 years has been paid with general revenue dollars.

I'm thinking more Soylent Green. And maybe nationalizing the bingo halls so we can talk old ladies money and give it to other old ladies. And free soylent patties at bingo. And just to be ironic we start with everyone named Patrick or Patricia.

I first heard this in 1983 when Social Security was going belly up in 25 years. Again in the 1990's when Social security would consume the Federal Budget in ... 25 years.

Now it's 30. That's different.

well this is bad news, especially since I and the rest of the world plan on doing nothing for the next 30 years. guess this is literally inevitable!

relcec: social security has been taking in less than it pays out for like 5 years now.

2 years, actually. It went into the red the first time thanks directly to the Obama-McConnell Debt Increase of 2010. Before then, it was estimated that Social Security would be running a surplus until at least the mid-2010s (accelerated up by the recession, of course).

Well, yes, there's the trust fund banked from when it was running a surplus, but it's still ironclad SSI money. When the account runs out, they don't automatically start pulling from income taxes.

2012-12-20 09:29:00 PM
This obviously means two things:

1) we need to spend more on intelligence and the military
2) It's time for a tax cut!

By then, we'll have state-supported mandatory euthanasia for elders to ease the financial crisis.

Tommy Moo: Well, yes, there's the trust fund banked from when it was running a surplus, but it's still ironclad SSI money.

Is this a joke? Any surplus in OASDI funds in a given year by law are invested in US treasuries...US treasuries then count that as cashflow into the general fund. The money then gets spent on wars and food stamps and bridges to nowhere. There is no such thing as a true "trust fund", it's a huge stack of IOUs to OASDI from the general fund. Do you really think we have the liquidity to add a couple trillion more dollars to the general fund's deficit to cover all of those treasury bills coming due?

yes they do.
there is no trust fund, there is no bank account. they pull form the treasury department and the general revenue fund, which pulls from capital, payroll, income, and corporate taxes every year.
there is no trust fund. there is an IOU that gets repaid from the tax dollars. this is a fact.

2012-12-20 10:33:01 PM
there is no bank account, in 2010 SSI ran a current account defect of $41 billion and that liability was paid by the general revenue fund. that $41 billion will get steadily bigger for the next 25 years unless payroll taxes are raised.
what you said cannot happen has already happened. two years ago. what you think exists does not exist.

I won't be snarky with you because a whole lot of media has been purposefully misleading about the nature of the SS trust fund over the years.
