I love how the give the winter classic to the leafs on the lockout year. It's like Bettman has a warped sense of humour about these things.

The vibe I'm getting is one of disgust with the NHL, that there has been real damage to that brand because of this lockout. It is weird to me that the owners are so clueless about the loss of value in their investment.

If they can't figure out a deal now, I don't see how one can be figured out before the next NHL season gets compromised.

The CFL's had some decent success under Cohen- he became commissioner in 2007, and they've had good attendance and ratings, and hey, look, some games are being carried on NFL Network- and he's been trying to get the CFL expanded into Ottawa and the Atlantic provinces. He's done the one-off game in a new market, but that market has been on actual Canadian soil, in New Brunswick.

His main issues? Those expansions haven't actually happened yet.

I was surprised I had him so high too, but... long labor peace, the wild card round would have gone off without a hitch had it not been for that infield-fly call that he really couldn't have done anything about, we've got the leagues equalized, parity is a viable concept now, and whatever you want to say about interleague play, the attendance numbers speak for themselves. Aside from the mishandling of the Ryan Braun case, I can't think of much he's done lately that's actually damaged the league.

Yeah, baseball seems to be doing pretty well. They learned after the last strike that people arent going to put up with that shiat. Hopefully hockey fans let to owners know how pissed they were by not going to games next season.

"Baseball" is doing well in that the rich teams are making more money than ever. The poor teams, however, are increasingly boned. Spending the most money doesn't guarantee you the World Series but it damn sure allows you to compete for it every year.

Just because the Red Sox were a dumpster fire last year and Tampa made the playoffs doesn't mean they aren't playing entirely different games when it comes to building a team.

I suppose it depends what you consider "long labor peace" since he saw over the 94 strike (in which he canceled the World Series instead of negotiating in good faith, and the judged ruled in favor of the union), and to be quite frank, that peace is just as much if not more because the the large arse stick the players union carries to keep Selig from doing Goodell shenanigans. It literally took an act of Congress for him to address steroids (admittedly the players union was to blame as well) Parity is a viable concept in that the Yankees have done poorly enough for someone else to win the AL. The revenue stream they can draw from is ridiculous (even if you assume the Mets get half of NYC, which they don't) and it doesn't look like that is gonna be fixed anytime soon. While you would have to find someone from Oakland to detail what he's done with the A's, its clear from the sale of the Dodgers he treats teams differently, and as an Astros I can sure as hell tell you about his treatment of the Brewers.

When he first came in, he was all about expansion. All the happened was that the Brewers moved to the NL Central. Then a few years later, we needed to contract, specifically the Twins. This had nothing to do with the fact that the Brewers would pretty much be the only team in the position geographically to pick up those fans. During the 2005 World Series, in which the Astros were playing, Selig told the Astros "fark you, keep the roof open in games 3 and 4" despite SOP with the current weather was to close the roof. The fact that the Astros wanted it closed and the White Sox wanted it open had NOTHING to do with it. During Hurricane Ike, in the middle of a heated playoff race, Selig had the Astros play a home game in Milwaukee against the Cubs..... while teams like the Rangers and Braves had available stadiums. The fact that this helped the Brewers make the playoffs was complete coincidence. Then he forced Crane to move the Astros to the AL as a condition of buying the team. Its not like there was a team in the NL Central that used to be in the AL or anything

I think the Blue Jays are choosing to go for it this year only in part because of the relative weakness (compared to years past) of the AL East, but also because of the potential weakness of the 800lb gorilla in Toronto, the Maple Leafs. The Leafs haven't made the playoffs in 8 years, and there is general disgust with the NHL among hockey fans, even in Toronto.

I think the Jays see their window for becoming not only competitive, but also relevant again in their market.
