Trials Evolution was a lot of fun and worth every penny. Can't tell how many hours I spent making tracks and crazy physics games.

Dishonored was probably the best single-player game I played this year.

Borderlands 2 was definitely the best multiplayer/co-op game I played this year

And since this thread will eventually devolve into an argument on Mass Effect 3, I'll just get this out of the way: I hated the original endings and it put a stain on me wanting to play it again or even get the DLC. It was cheap, had plot holes you could fly a dreadnought through, and just felt horribly rushed. The extended cut alleviated it a little bit, but not much (you still had the starchild). Now saying that, everything else besides the ending was fantastic and I loved every second of it.

I'm still too busy playing Skyrim to care.

Given, I bought it this September, but still.

No.

It ranked Diablo 3 ahead of Torchlight II.  Left 4 Dead 2 wasn't on the list at all.  Penny Arcade's On the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness 3 wasn't on the list at all.  CS:GO wasn't on the list at all.

A game that came out in 2010 wasn't on the list of the best videogames of 2012? Shocking!

CS:GO was just ok, and I say that as a die-hard Valve fanboy. It's a stopgap.

I bought it in 2012.  I think you're thinking of the first one.  I might be wrong though.  It's almost 5 here, and i'm ready to go home.

Left 4 Dead 2 was released in 2009.

From that list I've only played Halo 4 and just started AC3. I've heard good things about the walking dead game, has anyone played it?

my mistake, i meant Left 4 Dead 3, which came out sometime in 2014, like 8 months after valve promised it.

Still keeps a schedule better than Half Life.

antidisestablishmentarianism: From that list I've only played Halo 4 and just started AC3. I've heard good things about the walking dead game, has anyone played it?

I played the first two episodes, it's a lot of fun, but don't expect it to be an open world adventure. It's pretty much point and click with a few QTEs thrown in. It's much more about the story and how it ties into the comics/TV show.

For the price it is well worth it (I think it was $5 or $10 per episode). I know they're going to be bundling them and releasing a physical copy version of it.

Just finished Assasin's Creed 3 a few hours ago. Really liked it for the most part but it really had some serious bug issues. The naval missions were fun as hell and I would love to see a full game based around them (maybe start another franchise).

Guess I'll do The Walking Dead, Dragon's Dogma or XCOM next.

I've been wanting to play the Mass Effect series. A PS3 trilogy pack was just released and I almost bought it but a LOT of people are saying the first one has some major bug issues. Guess I'll have to pick up an XBOX in the near future.

/ can't wait for March. Looking forward to Bioshock, God of War and The Last of Us
// yes, I know The Last of Us got moved to May

Disagree with a lot of the list. Personally I'm tired of the gimmicky arcade games. They have no stayinng power. I forget I even played them.

Sad to see that sleeping dogs wasn't on there. That's how you know the list was no good. Sleeping dogs is Gta with a great story and good combat.

I have dishonored but can't play it. They tell you that you can play it any way you want, but quite literally if you don't do everything the stealth way, you don't get the "good ending".

I'd have ME3 and walking dead tied for first. I played me3 earlier in the year and the story still affects me and like it or not, some of those endings will be tropes for future scifi stories assuring cult status for the series. Personally I haven't seen humans versus robots story ending with the option of merging together.

I just finished walking dead a week ago. I've never cried in a game and I didn't for walking dead but I sure as hell got close. I seriously got lump throat big time.

I agree with csgo needing to be on the list. It's very much so the old counter strike you know and love but bout up to date with match making and visuals we expect to have. I haven't played TF2 since csgo came out.

They should have thrown swtor in there, too. Gripes aside, the single player aspect of swtor is great. It's an authentic star wars experience in an mmo?

Ccom was also great. It's a game that nobody talks about probably because those that are playing it are too busy playing it. It's a good 2 month experience.

Not a great list in my opinion I have not heard of many of the games on the list and i find a few games that should be there are not.

Journey was one of the best games I've ever played and its a shame that it is PS3 exclusive because I think it needs a wider audience

You mean going through the entire game willfully slaughtering every individual (whether they're an actual bad guy or just some underpaid lackey with no idea of what's really going on) might have consequences on the final act? Who knew.

That's my favorite thing about the game. I played a full stealth run, and ended up with a happy ending, but it was actually much harder to do. I then played a full no-holds-barred slaughter everything run, and it was almost simplistic and not very challenging, well except for the final act which punishes you for slaughtering everything you see by adding a shiat-ton of bad guys.

I think that's a great mechanic.

"Dear Esther" was interesting, but it certainly does not belong on a list of games.

That's what gives it replay value. See also: the Deus Ex series.

Far Cry 3 would be a lot better and more enjoyable if it was for the gawdaweful respawn points.

Yes, after I die I want to respawn on the other side of the freaken island.

Halo 4 should have been much higher, near perfect fps

2012-12-20 07:08:57 PM
huge number of those games I've never heard of.

i can't believe Diablo III even made the list. it was all but unplayable for me. Granted, I'm not running a top of the line Alienware PC, but it just wasn't fun for me.

I've played ME3, Skyrim (yes, technically it's a 2011 game, but they keep releasing content for it) Borderlands 2, Halo 4 and Hit man: Absolution.

Didn't care at all for the endings (even the revised ones) of ME3, but it's clearly not "over"
Still playing Skyrim far too much.
Finished Borderlands 2 and really enjoyed it... still have DLC to explore
Really enjoyed the Campaigns for Halo 4 and Hitman, but the multiplayer for Halo 4 is only mildly entertaining for me and the same for the Hitman: contracts.

The games i spend the most time playing at this time are Skyrim and Battlefield 3 (Xbox 360)

Dimensio: Would Xenoblade Chronicles qualify as a 2012 game?

Only if you are in North America, but because NA is the only country that matters, the answer is yes.

It's also one of the best RPGs of all time and the best Wii game ever so maybe it is just too good to be on this list?

2012-12-20 07:15:18 PM

sprawl15: Hotline Miami really was fantastic.

Agreed wholeheartedly. The story was great, the "characters" were twisted and dark and the only thing it needs now is a mapmaker or mods.

2012-12-20 07:24:15 PM
The Walking Dead is not worthy of game of the year. There's barely any game, it's choose your own cutscene.

Borderlands 2 is my GOTY.

2012-12-20 07:38:23 PM
ME3 shouldn't have been so high. It rode on the reputation of 1 and 2, and messed up a lot of the best characters for the sake of creating some conflict.

Sleeping Dogs is missing...and I don't know that I would call Dear Esther a game, though it was pretty.

I'd be bummed but I haven't had much game time lately anyway...

2012-12-20 07:54:37 PM
I made my peace with ME3. It was great right up until the end, but after some consideration they can't really have too divergent of an ending. I think having all of the endings being the same video with different color explosions was the poke in the eye that got the nerd-rage going. Maybe the gates shouldn't have been destroyed with all of them? Maybe the presence of the 'star child' shouldn't have been a Deux ex Machina at the very end? I never had a problem with Shepard dying. I suspected that the story was going to be a one-way trip for him from the very beginning.

2012-12-20 08:10:22 PM
I would have expected Final Fantasy XIII-2 to show up toward the bottom of the top 30. Not the best game by any means, but it was mildly enjoyable.

If a game offers me the option to sneak through the entire level without alerting anyone, I'm going to play the entire game that way. It's more difficult and, for me, more satisfying. I had a person on XBL tell me that they think that style of gameplay is "retarded". Of course, earlier in that conversation they claimed that Fallout ripped off Borderlands and that Borderlands was the better game. So he's a farking retard that I won't be taking ANY game advice from ever.

/If you're going to compare Borderlands to something, at least compare it to other "loot" games

Now, I enjoyed Sound Shapes, but it's not even the best Vita game of 2012. It easily gets its ass handed to it by VLR, P4G, and Gravity Rush. Then again, SS was on PS3 too and published by Sony, and they hyped heavily because it had tracks from big names. Decent, but c'mon, not in the top 10 of the year. Wonder if it got a popularity bump from giving 98 (all silver and higher) PSN trophies for a single day's play.

it's 25% off on steam right now and it'll likely get marked down to 50% in a flash sale or something. Toss it on your wishlist and they'll send you an email if it goes on sale. Or you can just compulsively check steam every ten hours during these damn sales like me.

I should add I haven't played it, and thus can't answer your question. I'm going to pick it up if it hits five bucks (50% off). That's generally my cutoff for games I'm not sure of.

I;m glad that you can enjoy being bummed, sad that you can't find the time for it, and either way can't quite work out what any of that has to do with playing videogames.

No "Sleeping Dogs"? List fail.

The list overall isn't that bad, but missing that is a huge oversight. It's one of the most outstanding games of the year. Not only one of the best 30, but easily one of the top 10 and probably even top 5.

2012-12-20 09:10:58 PM
After a good long time to think about it, I've decided the worst part of the ME3 ending is that it tarnishes what was, up until the very, very end, a fantastic game and an excellent build up. One of my favorite moments in the whole series is just before the end. Anderson is dead, the Illusive Man is dead, and Shepard is beat to hell and in obvious pain. Admiral Hackett comes over the comm and says that nothing is happening, and Shepard with infinite weariness resignedly says "what do you need me to do?" I thought that perfectly encapsulated the series right there. You could practically feel the weight of the galaxy on Shepard's shoulders. I've played the first and second games multiple times, but so far have only played the third once. I think I may give it another playthrough soon.

Diablo 3 was... hell, I wanted to like the game, I really did. I guess the fact that I only played it for a few weeks versus several years for its predecessor says enough.

I really, really like Halo 4. I've been a Halo fanboy since the first game so take my opinion with a grain of salt but I think they really did pretty everything right. I don't play it as much as Reach, but that is mostly because when Reach was released I had a large group of friends that played often enough that any given night I was on, there were enough people on to make it fun. For various reasons that don't have to do with the game itself, that isn't the case this time around.

2012-12-20 09:42:01 PM
List is useless without Fall Of Cybertron. Seriously. Yes, I'm a huge Transformers fanboy, and that does predispose me to like it, but when you factor in the voice acting, the writing, the world detail, the moments of high drama, the Grimlock level being the most pure fun of any level in a game since the NES days, and the last level being one of the most innovative ways of storytelling in games I've seen in a long time, it should have at least placed.

Really?  Granted I've only played the demo, but that game didn't really do much for me.  It just felt too much like a True Crime game for me to enjoy any of it. I've jumped to wrong conclusions from demos before, and I think the steaming turds that were the True Crime games may have scarred me permanently.

/christ those games were farking terrible

The Walking Dead is a damned metaphorical nutshot to the emotions, so to speak.
