At least this one recognizes that he can no longer distinguish fantasy from reality in time, subby.

Disaster averted.

I have caused untold destruction on my cities. I have sent hurricanes, unleashed tornados, and controlled conquering alien armies to smite the those citizens who refuse to develop beyond ramshackle houses because of property taxes.

But after 9/11, I threw away my Sim City 3000 disc, hoping never again to cause or witness such carnage.

I give him three weeks before he finds himself sheepishly browsing the used games at GameStop, possibly while wearing sunglasses and a trench coat.

He has it easy. My time playing Civilization has taught me that I am a genocidal maniac who doesn't even blink at sending untold millions to their deaths in a nuclear fire. It has taught me that I harbor deep-rooted, intractable hostility toward the Aztec people in general and their leader, Montezuma, in particular. It has taught me that I care not about how many goddamn units it costs to obliterate an enemy city, or how desolate and barren I leave the countryside in my efforts to destroy an opponent's economy and break his will. It has shown me the darkest side of myself, and I no longer play it. Mainly because the computer is a cheating sonofawhore, but that moral shiat's all out there.

Violent video games giving me the urge to murder makes as much sense as Civilization giving me the urge to invade Russia.

I've snapped: I'm a game-icidal maniac.

'm going out and buying several dozen LEGAL copies of Modern Warfare, Medal of Honor, and Grand Theft Auto and SENSELESSLY THROWING THEM at innocent peoples' heads.

I'll be all over the news tonight, just you watch! YOU'LL BE SORRY YOU WERE EVER MEAN TO ME, JERRY!

Moronic. As long as nut jobs can still buy assault rifles these types of killings will continue, and idiots still still blame video games. They sell fps video games in Great Britain and Germany, do they have mass shootings as often?

I'm genuinely asking... on my phone, don't plan on looking up the answer any time soon.

Queen Elizabeth is the real biatch!! Befriends you and then turns later when you are just about to take the offensive against Ghandi the sissy, BAM she attacks and destroys your army and takes half you cities. biatch!!

You know what? I'm OK with this guy. He's not calling us all psychos, he's not trying to get violent media banned, he's just saying that it hurts him too badly to play out those images on his screen. He's doing what everybody should do when they see something that offends them: he's turning it off.

Is there one? because that would be pretty cool and probably sell more games.

Maybe there is patch or something for Mass Effect where you can turn Reapers into small children around the age of 6 years old.

Basically. I disagree that he could shut off all violent things (and what technically is the line where it's too much for him), but he's not calling for a ban. I'm fine with his choice since he really isn't affecting anybody else.

I bet some people feel awkward with gun games with the shooting. A kind of 'too soon' thing they get over in a couple weeks.

We used the Build editor to make our high school in Duke Nukem 3D in the mid 90s.

Today, we'd probably get sent to Gitmo for that.

I wrote Doom WAD files with my high school as the map. But to each their own.

Never understood liberals on this point.

Ban cigarette advertising because it make people smoke.

Take Rush Limbaugh off the radio because speech influences people.

Don't say words like 'Chicago' or 'Food Stamps' because they are dog whistles for racist tendencies to rise up withing people.

First shooter video games that have awesome graphics depicting how easy it is to kill and maim for deluded teens and introverted fat boys?

AWWWWEEESSSSOOOOMMMMEEEE

2012-12-20 06:32:13 PM
I don't see the big deal here. The video game culture has taken a pretty major swing into the camp of glorifying violence. I have no problem believing that it's one of 800 million factors that has led to the rise in troubled, angry youth, but I have a problem believing that its share of the blame is anything more than 0.00000000000001%.

I'll admit, the idea of blowing people away--even in a video game--doesn't really appeal to me at the moment. My 360 hasn't been used for a week. Call me weak and overly emotional, but I'm still trying to suppress my gag reflex. I have a 4-year-old and he keeps catching me staring at him.

So he doesn't want his son to learn how to think critically and abstractly. Got it.

So you're too poor a parent to teach your kids the difference between fantasy/theoretical situations, and reality, and why things acceptable in one of those groups are fine, but in the other category the same actions are bad and cause harm?
Because that's what I got out of that article.

I know exactly one gamer that can't play certain games because of the level of violence, specifically the one where terrorists attack the Moscow airport and civilians are running around screaming.

He was an retired armed service member(can't remember which branch), and when he hit that point in the game, he just shut if off because it was "too real" for him.

2012-12-20 06:36:18 PM
having not heard about the specific level in MW2, I was surprised at first and was pretty surprised at what I had to do. But that didn't make me want to shoot up an airport.

That level was kinda hard, especially in multiplayer. No good place to hunker down.

Yeah, I have kids, and I don't play the violent stuff until they are in bed and the door to the computer room is shut.

I'll let them watch me play SWTOR though. My kids love love love Star Wars. However, I still wait until they are in bed before playing my Imperial Dark Side Sorc.

//They came in while I as playing the Amnesia demo once, and also F.E.A.R., luckily when nothing scary was on the screen...
