TheOther: You ever try to jerk it with a hoof?

Was that a semi-rhetorical question?

Hominids needed hands to grasp and climb because that is a great way to escape and be safe.
The adaption is also in the eyes. The eyes evolving to be more forward facing and spread
apart to give stereoscopic vision. The ability to judge distance and depth to make arboreal movement easier.

This article irritates the fark out of me because it fails to just assume the simplest explanation, ergo: our closest primate relatives ALL use their fist/wrist/knuckles as part of their terrestrial locomotion. Make a fist and crawl around. Funny, it works best when it's just like a punching fist.

We're a contentious, violent, aggressive species, but it pisses me off that some dipshiat probably got paid for several years to make this retarded, wrongheaded assumption.

Okay, admitting that I haven't tracked down the original research article, here's my first thought:

Did the hand evolve into its present shape because we punch, or do we punch because the hand evolved into its present shape? I mean, those of us who are pipe smokers use their mouths to hold a pipe, but that doesn't mean that pipe smoking influenced the structure of the mouth, it's exactly the opposite. So maybe we punch because we figured out that, of all the ways to hold the hand while bashing someone, that happens to be the most effective.

The hand makes a terrible club. Think about the training necessary to hit someone without breaking your hand (and even then, trained fighters still break their hands). The hand is awesome, however, at gripping an actual club. This is why stickfighters are better than boxers (neener neener).

No. God made our hands to grip bananas. Kirk Cameron told me so.
