madgonad: The writer made some mistakes here. The odds are not 52% or 50% - they are 25% at best.Red hair is recessive - which means that in order to exhibit the hair color you need to receive the red hair gene from BOTH of your parents. Because Harry is a ginger and Charles, William, and Diana are NOT it can be concluded that Charles and Diana are carriers and that William has even odds of being either a carrier or devoid of the red hair gene. So there is only a 25% chance of the kid getting the ginger gene from dad.Now for Kate's side.- she is either a carrier or not. That means she has a 0 or 50% chance of passing a ginger gene on to her kid. Since being a ginger requires getting the red haired gene from BOTH parents the best possible odds of the kid being a ginger is 12.5% - and that is assuming that Kate is a carrier. If you assume that she has the same odds as the rest of Britain (38%) - there is ~9.5% chance of the baby being a ginger.
zabdorff: although if both Charles and Diana were carriers wouldn't that mean William's got a 75% chance of being a carrier, not 50%? e.g. if R means not red and r means red, the expected distribution of Charles' and Diana's kids would be 25% RR, 50% Rr, and 25% rr.
