Catherine was a passenger in her work vehicle driving across the Port Mann Bridge when a chuck of ice hit the back of the vehicle. "Suddenly there was a big smash," she said. "I think it's just dented on the roof. It was crazy."

She said cars were stopped everywhere on the bridge as well.

Sounds like they needed to be....Port Mann towed?

Hey I know...

Canada can take all the black rifles that Obummer is going to confiscate and attach them to a guidance system and shoot the ice before it hits the cars, turning it into a gentle snowfall!!

No downside there!!

Because it has a HUGE marketing department.

In reality, Vancouver is a shiathole. Everything in Vancouver is poorly-made, overpriced, and sold by people who would sooner miturate in your ocular cavities then smile in your direction. Vancouver is a dead amusement park, staffed by accursed souls who grew up in an insane asylum.

Generation_D: clear_prop: Generation_D: Canadian bridge designers not accounting for bridge ice.  Thats kind of interesting.  Why was the old bridge not doing the same thing, he wondered.

But not enough to keep worrying about it.    Good luck with your bridge, Van.

Old bridge wasn't as tall and had mostly flat crossmembers, so ice mostly just melted in place, and if it did fall, it wasn't from as high.

They should have done an H tower instead of a central tower.  Then the ice bombs wouldn't be over the road.

Neat.  So designed-to-fail on delivery, with no real short-term solution possible, other than close and wait til spring.

Stick to building space arms?

Good luck guys.  If nothing else, light some bonfires under it and have a hockey riot.  Oh, wait...

That's how we roll here. Contracts go to the "best qualified" (wink-wink) and totally not to the brother-in-law of the Finance Minister.

Huh... those metal cables can't be heated or anything... not even slightly because they will expand too much and possibly destroy the bridge. Can't send crews out to put petroleum jelly on those things prior to the winter season... nope. Salt won't do, that'll rust everything. Heaven forbid they place chain link fence as a canopy above the roadway - that would ruin the aesthetic. Nope, I am sure there's really no other solution than to put people's lives in danger... from these "acts of God" or some such.
