There's going to be stiff competition among the workers who were not cut you see. Men and women will be challenged to keep a hand on their job, but their workforce is vast. Difference within the company could cause difficulty satisfying sales demands, but they'll have to keep the ball rolling if they want to come out on top. Hopefully Pfizer throws the fired sales staff a bone during these hard financial times.

Pfizer gave them the shaft, but they had to know they would be screwed in the end. After years of enjoying engorged budgets, the reality of workforce shrinkage finally nailed them. Sometimes the markets just go limp.

Wouldn't want to be 1) male 2) older 3) unattractive pharma rep at Pfizer this season.

Hey, hot communications majors need to earn a living somehow, right?

The scientists who developed Lipitor were probably fired about 15 years ago - they only saved millions of lives and earned their company billions upon billions of dollars. Clearly the people who deserved those bonuses were the CEO's who "led the company" during the difficult time of collecting billions of dollars.

Probably the 20% that didn't make their bonus targets for the year. Sales can be brutal sometimes.

The world is full of lying bastards - which means the pharma companies will always have plenty of fresh recruits to fill pharma-rep jobs. They don't need to hang on to dead wood.

Fine... I'll say it... It's farking medicine. Why is a sales force necessary for primary care drugs?

I usually feel bad when people lose their jobs. However, I can't seem to muster up sympathy for overpaid, shameless drug pushers who were essentially the foot soldiers for evil in stiletto heals using their whims to bribe doctors into getting their patients hooked on substances that are unsafe or that they don't need to begin with simply so the doctor can buy another Mercedes. Sorry I have no sympathy for big pharma or any of its minions. Although fark the executives more.

I knew someone who did that for a living. No work and all play for a hefty paycheck. They could ditch 50% of those guys. Sorry, but its about time.

Worked at a place where they would get rid of all but the top 5 sales people every few months and then hire 20 new ones. Rinse and repeat 3 or 4 times a year. THAT must have been brutal. Glad I worked in Engineering.

I was wondering the same thing.
Either the drug saves lives / relieves suffering, or it doesn't.
It does it very well, but costs X, or does it pretty well and costs Y.
It seems to me an informed consultation between doctor and patient is what should determine whether a bottle of pills gets sold.

Because someone has to bribe the doctor to prescribe Doryx (Doxycycline ER 150mg for the low, low price of a few hundred dollars) instead of two Doxycycline 75mg (price range of free to $4). Or the $700 acne cream which is formulated to be 5% weaker than a cheap generic with the same active ingredient.

Hold doctors to the same anti-kickback laws as pharmacies and Pfizer can fire their entire sales force of hot communication majors and med school dropouts.
